Very close friend has friends that are helping with recovery efforts in Western, NC. Told me media is not reporting actual facts. Shocker I know with this current corrupt administration. Death toll more than 240. He said over a thousand. They are pulling up bodies and parts in Lake Lure. Autopsies need to be done on every one of them. They need to make sure no one has been murdered and thrown in the lake area where the innocent victims were located. Just sickening.

I live in the foothills of NC and none of my friends' friends have told me that.
Hopefully Newsmax and OANN will do some good old fashioned investigative journalism. I assume the current corrupt administration doesn't control them... right? Ask your friend to connect his friends with some of those reporters.
More than 200 or 240 dead? Of course. 1000s? Doubt it; Katrina hit much bigger cities and killed 1300 or so. Corrupt admin keeping the lid on the media? Give me a break.

Asheville alone had near to 750 documented homeless folks pre-storm. A friend just South of there related to me that his church and others cannot find even a fraction of those folks now. As always the poorest of our kind suffer the most in these events.

I promise all of you that drug overdose, murder, sickness and disease, and just simply starving to death kill more of the homeless than any storm ever has and nobody wants to hear that being talked about, but let killer weather hit, and everybody wants to ask what happen to those poor homeless people.
We are the absolute richest country in the world, yet we have more homeless people per capita than any country in the world, even more that our neighbor Mexico and that's bc the most fortunate, richest people in our country refuses to give a handout to anybody, not even to most in their own bloodline family members that has worked their fingers to the bone their entire life. And the richest people in the US have more money than they could spend even if they had 50 kids they would be leaving it to when they die, and it's more than they could spend and still they wouldn't give a dollar to help the homeless, they see it as being the poor people problem!!!
We do live in one of the greatest countries in the world, and we have laws that govern about everything we do during our lives. But we don't have one law that would force the richest of the rich to help deserving people that never had the help to assure they had the advantages that the filthy rich kids had growing up with the best education that money could buy. If we had laws that would force the filthy rich to help deserving people to just have the education advantages that the rick kids had, we would have a lot more rich people than our country has that could help even more deserving people/kids to have a shot at the best education. If there were such a law that the filthy rich had to donate to the deserving for the best education that could be had, we wouldn't have near the homeless people we have today to wonder about what happen to them during one of these terrible storms. Afterall, it is the factories of the filthy rich that has cause the most of global warming that's causing the storms that's putting more and more people in a homeless state that weren't homeless before the storms that global warming has caused. Those rich people's factory smokestacks fill the atmosphere with carbon dioxide 24/7 bc of burning fossil fuels while getting filthy rich and killing this worlds OZONE!!! The poor don't stand a chance bc there was never laws made to help one another. Another thing, our prison systems are filled with 99% under educated poor people. With just a couple of laws about sharing the wealth. If those types of laws were made, we would only need one medium size prison per state...

The top 5% pay more than 65% of federal income taxes, the highest 10% pay 75% of them and the top 25% are accountable for 89%. The bottom half of earners, who make below $46,627 a year, paid just 2% of federal personal income tax, according to the report. It’s about choices…not taxes

I agree with your identification of the problem that's homelessness. I agree further that the factors you cited as being more fatal to the homeless are very real, but if you think further redistribution of wealth is going fix it you'll need to explain why the redistribution of wealth already taking place hasn't shown itself to be the magic bullet many claimed it was to be. Also, education in this nation is compulsory but the general education achievement of the population isn't encouraging. So what gives?

Too much to respond to, but just this thought: maybe instead of handouts, let’s help people find jobs so they can support themselves. Trickle down
Asheville has a labor shortage so jobs is not the issue. Drugs, mental illness and desire are the issues. Life is not easy and neither is pulling yourself up. Asheville is even more difficult as the libs make the bottom tolerable with support vs the hard wake up bounce. Yes I know that seems heartless but life is hard

Logic would dictate that if homeless people have freedom of travel, and they do, then if things were better in other places, they would just go there. Homeless people are rational actors, they go where they get the most free stuff and get hassled the least. That is why they swarm to the most liberal cities. There is no amount of money you can give them that will stop this behavior from happening. Most countries with "less of a homeless problem" round their vagrants up and jail them or worse, so the fact that we have a homeless problem is actually a sign of how amazing and free a place the USA is.

I also live in WNC and I am not seeing any evidence of a cover up or a conspiracy. If the government was trying to punish anyone, it sure wouldn’t be the Blue Heaven of Asheville.
Government bureaucrats are not my favorite people but EMS, Fire, Rescue, LEO, and Public Works employees are busting their Asse$. Utility company line men and DOT employees are working incredibly hard right now and the past two weeks. Grocery store employees are visibly overwhelmed. I suggest folks lace up their boots, get their work gloves, and drive up to help.

Unfortunately there is little opportunity for the average guy to help. At this point, we need equipment operators, linemen and skilled trades. Folks don’t understand FEMA is not boots on the ground, they pay money and coordinate federal resources. In our situation, the biggest issue is expectations, as doing what needs to get done takes time but when a person is suffering it is never fast enough

Perfect summary. "In our situation, the biggest issue is expectations, as doing what needs to get done takes time, but when a person is suffering it is never fast enough".
I have a ton of empathy for our neighbors to the North. But there is limited trained/ skilled human resources that can be coordinated and dispatched. I know more are trying to be provided, but it takes time. The constant drum beat regarding where is FEMA? All I can say is that from the little bit of research that I have done, using Wikipedia as source info, the affected population /area is roughly 1.1 million people over an area of 8800 square miles. That will take a lot of time to cover. Trying to put a number on this, if you assume that you had 3 people to a household, limited a "FEMA" visit to 20 minutes a home, ignore travel between households, the manhours to do the damage surveys is over 120,000 hours of work. If you had 500 skilled disaster relief FEMA agents deployed it would take 25 days working 12 hour days. I don't know how many disaster relief employees FEMA has the ability to dispatch. But its not enough. And if we actually had enough, people would complain that we had to many on the payroll and that's wasteful. Its a no win situation. That said, I get letting people vent. Its a desperate situation. If you are able to help, and can team up with church groups, non profits etc. Your awesome! Just try to keep positive and moving forward with the intent of each day getting a little bit better.

There will always be somebody saying things that isn't close to the truth, and this surely sounds like one of those times. Nobody loves making things sound to be worse than they are than the media, and it's always been that way. So please tell why would the media pull back and make this news story sound to be less than it really is when it's their practice to make it sound worse than it really is? They didn't and they won't, not in this lifetime!!!

It's an election year and NC is a swing state. Bush was ripped to shreds for not getting to Nawlins until 3 days later. Took Biden a week.
Now, as for the 1000 dead, I think we all know it's higher than 240 and will rise, probably by alot. Problem is identifying bodies after something like this. In flood waters like that, bodies are ripped to shreds. Hard to get a solid number on how many are still missing, but it's hundreds for sure. Some may never be found. Flash floods that violent are deadly, and no one was expecting it. My mom's family was caught in a flash flood in a mountain holler in WV in 1972. 3 coal ponds at the top of it burst after heavy rain. 7000 people in the holler, 4000 left homeless and 125 dead. And that's just 1 holler. How many hollers up there saw the same type thing happen? It's going to get uglier, no doubt

Did not take Biden a week. FEMA was in communications with Gov Cooper of NC right away. Issues were with roads and communications in the area.
This is where I live. So I will take my eyes and ears and knowledge over the hyperbole and conjecture of others, especially people blinded by a wanna-be dictator and his media cronies.

I stated last week that a friend with a freight carrier delivered 1,000 body bags last week and a couple refrigerated trailers. Well, they took another load of 1,000 bags yesterday.
Also have a friend who delivered tools, cash, and gas on Saturday in Old Fort. He said that a friend of his, former special forces, was also in WNC this weekend with other ex-special forces guys. They have an operations set-up to receive and deliver goods, all grass roots. FEMA showed up at their “base” and asked if they had a permit for their supply collection and if not they’d have to confiscate for not being an approved vendor. The former special forces guys told the FEMA rep to go #@&* themselves and if they even tried to enter thru their gate, it wouldn’t be pretty. The FEMA workers got back in their vehicle and left.
Very sad and devastating situation!

Where does one get a permit to distribute collected good? I have never heard of such a thing.
With Cell Phones having cameras with the ability to record videos, how is there not a video of this exchange? Officials usually identify themselves when they approach a group. If this really was FEMA personal, hopefully your friend got names. If not, how does he really know it was FEMA people? Where they wearing wind breakers? And If this happened the way he said it did, has he reported them? Because he should if it played out like you say.
Unfortunately, I am skeptical of this story. It has the setup/ is similar to a game of telephone. I have played this game with my Cub Scout pack, and the message at the start of the game is not the same message that makes its way through the group. Its not even close.
I would more likely believe that an encounter happened. And maybe some folks were asked to identify themselves with what non-profit/ church/ etc. they are aligned with. Who was said group coordinating with in regards to distributing supplies? Also, with most of the area not having power and no communication, how do you communicate to the people in need in regards to getting them the supplies that are donated?
If I am stuck in a "hollar" with no phone service and I have to walk out of the area, how do I know where to go to get the supplies? How do I carry them back to my place of shelter? I would hope that distribution points are being established that are fixed to accomplish this. I personally think that maybe there is a chance that the "FEMA" people indicated they could take possession of the supplies and get them to a common distribution point that has been established. Maybe that did not sit right with your friend. I don't know. But I do see lots of possibilities for the story to "grow".
That said, if it happened the way your friend has communicated. Please, encourage them to report it. Folks who take advantage of people in situations like this, I feel like need to be dealt with publicly. There is no place for it.

Where is the truth? Provide evidence. If any of the conspiracy theories surrounding this storm were true, the proof would be all over social media. We no longer live in the boomer era; everyone has a camera in their hands now. Use common sense and stop being fooled by idiots.

Basic political strategy at work here. "Never let a crisis go to waste."
Blame the media if you can: blame the other side no matter what.
I call BS every time on the side who tries to make political points based on a tragedy. Lots of misery in the mountains. POS on the right trys to make points by blaming the left. STHU and go help the people who were hurt. Just STHU and do something worthwhile.

You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to believe
A) our American news media has become incredibly lazy. Reliable news gathering is incredibly expensive, fraught with error and pisses off the people in power. It’s far easier to become a government mouthpiece, only interview the people in charge, never challenge a bureaucrat, never risk losing your spot on the bus and just accept the paycheck. Besides, when you can get scooped by either any idiot with a cell phone or an AI artist in Bangladesh, you tend to ridicule the hard part of news gathering.
B) our government apologists tell us that FEMA and the NG are second and third wave responders and that the first wave is local officials and charities. What happens when the catastrophe is so big that the first wave loses the capability of command and control? Or the local officials don’t have essential resources? Now that the second and third waves are arriving in NC (it only took a week+),I find it easy to believe the reports that they are trying to elbow aside the first wave charities, volunteers and organizations who responded to the crisis with urgency and were there from the beginning. FEMA and NG are not urgent care providers, and they are never going to be efficient with time, money, scarce resources or manpower. It’s unfortunate that they think they are the big dogs.
C) the nature of the disaster in NC will never be fully known, reported, nor sadly, cared about by people outside Appalachia. The next news cycle will be about Milton, then back to what some politicians said, and hopefully not back to the Middle East. Hopefully the state of FL will be better equipped for their type of disaster than NC was for theirs (not casting stones). Hopefully the tragedies of Helene will prompt changes within bureaucratic preparations and response. But since we expect so little from our bureaucrats, probably not.
D) after Katrina, GWBush’s reputation as a critical leader and Micheal Brown’s career as a bureaucratic leader were forever destroyed for their response only being half as slow as this administration’s. Maybe the process has changed; I don’t know. But I’m not a conspiracy theorist for making that observation.

Weird way to go through life.
I can assure you, the death hole will be higher and then what’s reported, they are following normal process with the resources and capacity they have.
I can also assure you, this is not some democratic conspiracy to hold oppressed Trump lovers down into the very victimhood they cannot seem to stop claiming.
There are far more pleasurable ways to go through life, and I would encourage you to seek those out.

I have no idea how many are dead. But my nephew is with the Guard and he’s there revering bodies. Based on his descriptions it’s way more than 240. That much is absolutely true. It’s horrifying hearing what he says he’s doing. Very sad.
