Yep...I don't think anyone thought every last sanction was bad and that they didn't care about national security. It's a little more nuanced than that.

It means that the tariffs talks have more power for the American side than before.
Now that we’ve caught PRC sneak8ng in ~spy stuff into the products that they sell us, we have a powerful new hammer.
We tell PRC that:
First step: PRC must reveal every single export item that has or will have ‘spy stuff,’ either surreptitiously or openly disclosed, in your products. PRC must reveal every sub-assembly that gets exported to third party countries that in turn make ‘nect stage’ products that either will -or- might possibly end up in the USA. These disclosures must be made before the end of the ‘tariff pause’ between America and PRC.
Second step: Failure to comply with any aspect of First Step will lead to full implementation of the America tariffs on all items imported from PRC.
Third step: America awaits your response.
(*). By taking the initiative and getting moving on the tariff negotiations quickly, PRC feels the pressure that, had the negotiations been conducted by government know-nothings about how to conduct meaningful and expeditious negotiations, never would have had a strong possibility of quickly cutting off PRC’s spy stuff on us

What if China embargos all refined rare earth minerals? Then they refuse to buy any American crops? Then they dump 700 billion in US bonds?
You are living in a f*cking fantasy world if you think an orange dingleberry has any leverage, except militarily and even then with nukes, over China at this point. And we really don't want a war with China. Even the ######### SecDef said they could take out all of our aircraft carriers in short order (we lost two planes from the flight deck avoiding Houthi ballistic missiles with 1960s tech).

PRC is in a worse situation than us.
Remember, despite insisting that they would not reach out to Trump admin first, they did (with the US agreeing to help PRC conceal their trade representatives).
The saving face thing is for public image. Big deal for Western countries; much bigger deal for East Asian countries.
xxxxxxxx
Why doesn’t PRC dare to risk their economy in hopes that America will cave first? Because professional negotiators are not gamblers. It’s a pyrrhic victory for PRC if they beat America in a negotiation and simultaneously ruin 5heir economy, face a mass civil uprising, and end up losing power.
PRC risks ruining a trade deal that they can live with if they keep getting caught doing bad stuff. Getting busted in the ‘spy ware solar’ panels is a negotiations catastrophe for PRC. If indeed they had a shred of leverage on the rare earths before the spy-ware solar panels, they don’t any longer.
(*). Now, if Trump admin gets too greedy as negotiations continue (BTW, imposing a ‘the trade deal will be immediately cancelled if PRC embeds spy war or doses packaged food products with poison will NOT be ‘getting too greedy), then if PRC sees the tariff deal as being ruinous to them, then regardless of how it affects America, then PRC will have nothing to lose by refusing such a trade deal.
You and every other intelligent person knows that, with the exception of a negotiation where one side has absolutely nothing of value to the other side (I.e., N.Korea), both sides must end up either (1) getting something -or- (2) not losing too much.
From what we see at this time (and of course we don’t get to see intimate details [thank goodness!]), the trade negotiations with PRC are going well.

That’s some wild fantasies. You have your panties in a bunch over solar panels, so you probably missed the news about switches and routers. And chips in almost every cellphone.
Trump is a f*cking moron. If you think he’s anything more than that, you are a f*cking moron too.

Of course we know this.
The beauty of catching PRC embedding spy stuff in a prominent product that they sell to us is that they got caught smack-dab in the middle of the America / PRC trade negotiations as the talks are getting serious.
This is fortuitous, certainly, for us.

Danny - seriously, since the Chinese got caught you think they’re gonna stop putting this stuff in inverters? As part of tariffs negotiations we’re going to tell them to stop and they will stop? That’s funny. Not gonna happen.
The tariffs have nothing to do with them putting hidden comms in inverters.
They will continue and hope that some get past us.
We will step up our efforts for scrubbing and screening imported product.
Wake up dude.

Danny - do you realize that plenty of countries are simply agreeing to a tariff agreement with Trump just to make him happy. Trump just wants the headline and the press. Then he is done. He doesn’t care about implanting tariffs or any trade agreements. He just wants to announce trade agreements.
It’s pretty easy to negotiate with Trump. Agree to whatever tariff arrangement he wants and then implement something else.
Trump will be busy with renaming a peninsula in Alaska or banning gay dudes from steakhouses by the time anybody notices what type of tariffs and trade practices you’re implementing.
Seriously, this isn’t complicated. And you can be sure Trump doesn’t care. Not one bit.
