yes...the NCAA selection committee meets the Sunday/Monday after the ACC tourney(actually the Sunday, the ACC championship game is played) to select the 64 team field for the NCAA tournament. However the 16 Regional sites are selected before the ACC Tournament concludes.

Change this year

The host sites will not be picked until Sunday night after all tournaments have concluded. They just changed the policy this year due to feeling Miss St would have gotten to host after winning the SEC tournament last year if the selection committee had been able to wait for the game to finish.

yes.some teams need to make a good showing in their tourneys and some times even win it in order to host.i think we host as it stands now, esp. if we get atleast 1 at fsu.

Yes they do as others have stated. You may have been thinking about Major league baseball. Playoff wins are not counted toward the regular season win total. Whereas in College in win is counted toward the win total.
Great question. Go Tigers!

Why is 40 the "magic" number?
May 13, 2013, 8:05 AM

If we had won 4-5 games we lost against bad teams this year, we'd already be at that 40, even if we'd been swept by UNC, SCAR and UVA.
Would winning 40 with no really strong wins be better than winning 38 or so and having wins over those top teams?
Just asking, because an arbitrary number like 40 seems to be viewed as the key.

Very few teams with 40 wins in a major conference are ever passed over as NCAA host. Sure 38 wins and a higher RPI would be better than 40 and a low RPI but usually for a team in a major conference 40 wins is the number.

Those few bad losses hurt our RPI probably worse than a few

Seems like I recall a similar conversation on ESPN right

after the basketball tourney selections were made. I think they were comparing a team with no good wins/bad losses against a team with good wins but also bad losses. The former got in, so you're probably right. Bad is greater than good.

The selection committee knows that a random Tuesday night outcome isn't nearly as important as what you do on the weekend. We would have gotten more out of taking that friday game from UVA than any loss to UGA would hurt us.
If you are a bubble team then bad losses might be a factor. But it won't matter for Clemson.

40 wins is sort of the old basketball "20 wins"

It's not a rule, just one of those benchmarks to shoot for.
Essentially the thought is that with our SOS and RPI, 40 wins (and a decent bid) would make us impossible to pass over as a Region host.

40 wins has always been a benchmark

Seperates the really good from the above average. Kinda like the 10 win football season and the 20 win basketball season.
Thing is, 40 wins in baseball has become harder to do with fewer games and those other benchmarks have become easier to get.
