Different hitting approach

With pitching limited, we will need to be much more aggressive at the plate and just work to make contact. It seems we are striking out looking a good bit. Also in clutch situations looking for walks and not hits. There will be very close pitches that even called a ball are very close to strikes that we could hit. For whatever reason it seems like we are trying to walk and not trying to hit. We need the hitting team back!

If that’s true why are we striking for so often, either swinging at pitches out out the zone or looking at pitches that are obviously in the zone?

On Paino and Priest, they just lob the first one over the plate for strike one,

Then, they foul one off, and then they swing and miss at a ball.

We aren't. I dont know if youre the guy that keeps saying that on all the posts, but I completely disagree. It's one thing to be disciplined. It's another for Jarrell, coming off a hot streak and a freaking grand slam, to stand there on a 0-2 count with BASES LOADED and watch a called 3rd strike. Next play double play to end an inning. That isnt discipline, thats stupid. Swing the daggum bat. The only player I fully trust to do his own thing is Listi. I do think Listi's bat may save us at some point. People are so used to him standing there getting hit or taking pitches I think he pounds one.

Agree....mostly. The problem with this hitting approach is that the batter doesn't get many swings during each at bat. Our supposed cleanup hitter usually gets one swing per at bat....that's it. When batters take this passive approach to hitting and stand there like statues when beautiful pitches are taken for strikes, then panic sets in and the batter feels like he has to swing at his last chance which is a curve ball low and away and they couldn't touch it with Wilt Chamberlain's Fly rod. We have about 5 hitters, one in particular, who are usually 1-2 in the count having never swung the bat virtually every at bat. This puts too much pressure on the kids. Better to expect to take 3 good swings every at bat and stop trying to score runs via walks and HBP. Let them come when they come and take advantage of them when they do by hitting line drives somewhere.

I always waited for my pitch. It also was dependent upon the situation. With RISP I was looking for a pitch on the outer part of the plate to drive to opposite field to hit behind the runner. Hitting isn’t easy. Getting one 3 out of 10 tries is celebrated a great. Maybe load the pitching machine with golf balls to really get their eyes right. Place a stripe on half and make them run laps when they hit the one without a stripe!
