New Story: Watson's performance was Heisman-worthy

Dec 4, 2016, 8:01 AM

Watson's performance was Heisman-worthy

Deshaun Watson proved Saturday night why he’s the best player in college football, and he did it as Heisman Trophy frontrunner Lamar Jackson looked on from the sidelines. Full Story »

field. In my opinion he is the best player on the field each week. But I think what does not get enough credit, and I hope the voters will consider it...the guy is graduating from College in 3 years! He is not "leaving early." He is doing what all college students do; he is graduating and moving on to his career. In addition he appears to be very active in charitable pursuits.

DW4 is a complete class act, and any voter that does not see that needs to understand that there is more substance to life than a some superficial highlight reel showing off poor tackling and improvisation.

Stats Lamar vs Deshaun

Dec 4, 2016, 9:10 AM

Passing yds. Deshaun 3914 vs Lamar 3390
Passing TDs Deshaun 37 vs Lamar 30
Rushing yds Desahun 670 vs Lamar 1598
Rushing TDs deshaun 6 vs Lamars 21

So deshaun has more passing stats. Lamar has more rushins stats. I feel like these stats are pretty comparable. The one glaring one might be the 21 rushing TDs for Lamar, but....
Does that matter when u lose 3 times, lose the head to head, lose the conference title and dont go to a major bowl?

IMO, the heisman trophy should go to the best player on the best team... there is no question that is deshaun. Give him the hardware!!!

No, it shouldn't necessarily go to the best player on best t

That's the only reason Henry won last year, even though Watson & McCaffrey were clearly better. It should go to the the best player, that also exhibits superb leadership skills & great character as well. Factor in all three, and Watson should win easily.

Good point with regard to the passing stats vs. rushing stats. If I could further your point, Jackson was left in during blowouts against bad teams a lot longer as well. He played late against schoold like UNC Charlotte, SC State and Syracuse, while Dr. Schuess and Bryant would have long since been in. Yeah, Watson got banged up against Cuse, but he was likely coming out next series anyway. Heck, agains our in-state rival he only played 1st-2nd maybe series in the 3rd quarter. If Dabo had wanted to, he could have let Watson stay in, likely getting another 10 TDS for the season. The numbers would look a lot different then.

In his WHOLE TIME at Clemson, he has NEVER had a "bad" game. He's never cost us a game. Incredible consistency AND, most importantly, he plays his best in big games and crunch time.
Question: In all of college football, who else would you want on your team?
Screw stats.....Give him the Heisman!

I think what voters don't see is his ability to buy that extra second to allow his receivers to get in position to make a play on the ball. Last night he showed time after time how he can extend a play and be as "cool as the other side of the pillow". To me, experience should win out over highlight film moments every time. But that's just me.

It's NOT just you!

Dec 4, 2016, 10:12 AM

I couldn't agree more. If the vote was by football player and fans, Watson would win in a landslide... but in today's society, it's all about the media.

Back when I was teaching sales training, I would tell the recruits to sell every product like it was bacon: You sell the sizzle, but you eat the pork. Unfortunate, but true.

DW4... you're number one in the heart of every Tiger fan. Give yourself a nice going away present, and win it all!

I think he should win it. He is the best player in college football. Deon Cain is wrong though. Nobody doubted him. If anything, we put extremely high expectations on him. He's had a phenomenal season IHO. He shouldn't be punished because it wasn't what the media, and we, thought it would be.

It is supposed to the most "outstanding" college

Dec 4, 2016, 10:59 AM

football player, which DW4 is in every meaning of the word. If it was just the most "athletic" it would have to be LJ. Hoping voters see it the same way.

Likewise... if it were based on stats alone

Dec 5, 2016, 8:44 AM

McCaffery would have won last year...

That was the problem with him and Cook. They weren't on teams heading to the playoffs.

Watson is the most outstanding player in college football. He is an amazing quarterback, an outstanding runner, but more importantly a person that anyone would be proud to be compared to. Not only will he graduate in 3 years but he put in huge hours to charities and fan outreach. He is so much more than just a football player. This man will be a winner in life regardless of the Heisman voting.

did Watson break that lineman's arm with the pass?

Dec 5, 2016, 10:23 PM

never heard what happened to the guy who deflected the pass early in the 2nd half......
