to burying himself. Poor recruitment of last two QBs and poor hiring of last two Offensive Coordinators has got us in a hole zi hope we can get out of. I was impressed with Bill O’Brien of Boston College play calling last night. Here was a professional that knew what he was doing compared to Streeter and Riley that don’t have a clue.

I agree with you on that bill O’Brien really called a great game but it was against fsu let’s see how does against better competition

Poor recruitment of the last 2 qbs? Dabo went and recruited two 5 star all American high school Qbs which every other big school also offered. Its not his fault that the high school ranking system people need to be tested and that these guys didnt pan out, especially DJ. He can only do so much

I see Dabs can do no wrong for you. His mistakes have gotten us in this mess. A proven experienced OC was not hired in either case.

You aren't wrong on your overall assessment of where we are, but recruiting 2 guys who were Top 2 QBs out of HS and both leading their teams to state championships in CA and TX looked like clear winners to everyone. Fault does not lie in recruiting them, but some fault may lie in developing them, although it may just be that they simply didn't have what it takes for the next level. Hard to imagine we had (2) 5* in a row turn out that way but you never really know for sure what you have until you get them on campus and get them in game situations.

ZERO development is the issue

Sometimes 5* HS players just don’t work out in college. Even at schools other than Clemson! Gasp!

T.J.Daniels - 5* QB originally signed by USC. Wasn’t good enough, then transferred to … UGA. Kirby Smart had him start against us in the 2021 season opener. J.T. didn’t work at UGA, either.

By your reasoning, Dabo must have screwed up J.T.Daniels, too. Couldn’t be that Saint Kirby Smart also whiffed … in the transfer player action, no less. Nope. Had to be Dabo’s fault.

Notably Kirby moved on from Daniels early and did not look back.

I agree that we have yet to see the expected improvement expected with Riley’s hire, but EVERYONE lauded the his hire 20 months ago as a homerun. The football world really took notice. Riley was considered “the man” as offensive coordinator, and many thought Clemson would be lucky to get 2 years out of him before he was offered a major head coaching job. Throw in a new Defense Line coach and the well respected OLine hire in December, and I don’t see how you can say Dabo is making bad decisions.

Cade

Per 247 DJU was the #1 pro style QB in his class and #2 overall prospect. Cade was the number 2 overall QB and number 13 overall prospect. Every single Clemson fan was pumped when those two guys signed. DJU is clearly a bust and Cade has the rest of this season to prove his isn't. The issue was not bringing them in, it was the lack of development and them being overrated.

As far as Riley goes, I also remember when everyone in here was excited about the hire. The OC of a team that made it to the national championship game and Lincoln's brother got everyone excited.

When it comes to those three signees Dabo made the right call. They just didn't work out.

At some point, we cant keep saying they just didnt work out

Sep 3, 2024, 10:03 PM [ in reply to Re: Did not in my lifetime think Dabo would be this close ]

and start asking why.

The answer is that we don’t develop players well.

There is a reason Beaux Collins looked so much better in his first game at Notre Dame than he ever did at Clemson. He has a receivers coach who played in the NFL and coached receivers at the power 5 level prior to being hired by Notre Dame.

Collins also plays for an offensive coordinator who was the offensive coordinator at LSU previously.

The experience level of our staff pales in comparison to what the elite programs have. It’s arguably the main reason why we have declined so much as a program.

5 rec 62 yds...he had better games here...

Sep 4, 2024, 4:54 AM

That's a big stretch as a legitimate example of a developmental failure. Go ahead get him fitted for a gold jacket though...5 catches and 62 yds for a team with a notoriously weak WR position group.

Why join a bunch of whiners? How is that working out for you? Have you changed anything? You could change teams. That’s about as much pull as any of us will ever have when it comes to decisions made by our coaches.

I think there is a difference in acknowledging that

Sep 3, 2024, 9:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Close to burying himself? ]

we are not on the level of national championship caliber teams currently and were not last year either vs saying Dabo is “burying himself”.

Some of you posters are calling for him to be fired, for him to retire, and one has even compared him with Joseph Stalin. The absence of reality in those types of statements shows you just how much some people are manipulated by stuff they read on the internet, and it’s terrible for society.

Don’t include me in that. I’m not calling for anything of the such.

As far as “burying himself”. If self inflicted decline of roster talent, experience, age and overall ability that leads to W T F moments in games isn’t burying one self I don’t know what is.

Well he basically just ran it down FSU’s throat on their home field. OL’s matter, and loved he stuck with the ground game. Wore FSU out. Refreshing to see that kind of football.

Did O'Brian get his OL from the portal? Did BC out recruit us at OL over the last 4 years? They got lucky or smart with a one year UCF QB that developed. FSU got the best portal players including QB that were available last year. Would any of them have helped us? I didn't see it in their games. Other than the OLs we offered the last 3 years, who could we have gotten that would make a difference? Maybe a receiver or 2 but I'm not convinced that is currently the problem.

I don't know how to read defenses like a play caller but for whatever reason we are not a downfield threat and that allows teams to take the short game and running game away. The OL gave Cade more time to throw but we weren't effective consistently.

I believe we can improve and possibly being contention for a playoff spot. Will have to win out regular season to secure one though.
