Did lockdowns lead to the variants ??

Mar 22, 2021, 10:25 AM

Virus needs time to mutate...

Lockdowns afforded them this time.

The faster you get to herd immunity the less time allowed for the variants to develop

I can tell you one thing

I tested my immunity to the max this weekend and so did my kids. We shall see how this weekend works out about Wednesday or Thursday.

I’ve been testing my immunity since this whole thing started.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

seems like it needs to replicate to produce a variant

No Dr Chem Chem

lockdowns would have the exact opposite effect. But I find your post very enlightening, it explains a tremendous amount.

Yalemedicine.org says ...

Mar 22, 2021, 10:48 AM

The novel coronavirus is highly contagious and had spread almost unchecked throughout the world for the last year. It remains a bit of a mystery as to why these variants are emerging now ... and what it will mean long term for vaccination programs

Sounds like the scientists are befuddled ... glad you’ve got it figured out ... maybe you should give them a call

Viruses mutate after jumping hosts numerous times., that kind of does not happen when people are in lock down. It is is not an issue of the virus having time, it does not have a brain and sit there thinking of ways to mutate, these are mistakes that happen after it replicates across enough hosts. Mistakes that create a dominate strain overtake the weaker strains. , in fact it is not even a living organism. Your own body replicates by mistake. So the mroe people that it infects, the higher the likelihood it will mutate.

But hey, you know all this right doc?

So we should have seen variants earlier

Mar 22, 2021, 11:45 AM

Say ... last spring ... There were plenty of cases then

why the delay? Why the variants now and not then?

Despite your perceptions, time moves just as fast as it always does, regardless of a quarantine. Two months is two months, whether you travel or not.

Re: Did lockdowns lead to the variants ??

The variants are not really new with this outbreak. Early on, it was clear that there were two variants on the US, as it was reported that most of the cases in the west coast were more like the virus from China, whereas most on the east coast were similar on the virus from Italy.

Variants need bodies to replicate....

Mar 22, 2021, 11:05 AM

Not really time. The more bodies it's in, the more variants you get.
