Did anyone here attend the last Big Thursday Game in 1959?

Oct 1, 2021, 5:10 PM

I know this only applies to the old timers, but does anyone know or remember if any goalposts were torn down. I have a 1-foot section of what I'm told was a piece of the goal post. Story was some students (Clemson) tore it down, took it across Bluff Rd. to the farmer's market, and they cut it up with hacksaws. It's a hollow steel tube, and white on the outside.

I was there (10 years old) for the game. Bunch of guys passed us with the goal post on their shoulders as we walked back to our car. I watched them section it up with hack saws as well as hammers and large chisels. And, yes, it was white. So, your story is true!

fish stories over the years, just wanted to be sure. I know he was there. Have the ticket stubs and program, and evidently a piece of the goalpost. :)

I was there. Don't remember the goal posts, but there were a lot of other shenanigans that are probably best not recounted.

I was there as a student. Helped with goal post cut up. Had a piece for years but somehow got lost in a move.

a few more confrontations inside the stadium. Student sections tended to empty and surround the confrontations. It was pretty wild for a 14 year old kid watching all this. I was a Clemson fan then and loved that Clemson won the game.

All for one and one for all.

I was a student then, and a group of us wanted to get a bottle of cheap ripple but didn't have two nickles to rub together. We came up with this idea of taking old pieces of iron pipe we got from a scrap yard in Pendelton and painted it white. Cut it into 1 foot sections and told people it was from the goal posts from the Big Thursday game in 1959. Them suckers ate it up and we made enough money to buy several half pints of good moonshine from a bootlegger in Seneca. You no doubt have one of those pieces.

By the way, some one told us that if we uri nated thru it, it would keep it from rusting from inside out. Does your piece have any rust on the inside. I always wondered if that really worked.
