Did anyone else see Charles Barkley's comments on the

22

current state of college athletics?

He called it "a travesty and a disgrace." Said he was so mad at how we can mess something up so beautiful and that in the next 3 to 5 years we are going to have 25 schools that dominate college sports because they can afford players, and these schools who can't afford or won't pay players are going to become irrelevant.

I'm glad he spoke up about it and I think unfortunately he's dead on.

25 teams will dominate? How is that different from the last 50 years?

My thoughts exactly. Still gonna be the Alabama's, UGA's, Oklahoma's and Ohio State's of the world still running the show in college football like how it's always been. College Basketball will still have parody for the foreseeable future just because that's how the game is. I don't see baseball or soccer becoming too crazily different.

He is thinking that “wealth gap” becomes even WIDER…

Mar 28, 2023, 7:18 AM [ in reply to Re: Did anyone else see Charles Barkley's comments on the ]

I suspect that your response will be that essentially it doesn’t matter HOW WIDE the gap is.

It just matters that there is a GAP, and the teams on the “good side” of the gap will continue to live well.

IMHO, the NUMBER of teams on the “good side” of the gap becomes MUCH SMALLER, as in maybe 10 teams. There will be another 15 teams that will be sent to the “other side of the tracks” to the “bad side” of the gap, never to return.

The response will again be, ”How is this any different from the 10 teams that dominate over the past 20 years?”
  • That is a FAIR response.

I assume that as there is FINITE amount of money that can be spread around in this situation.

  • As the money begins to pool around those 10 ”good side” teams, the ”bad side” teams will suffer in terms of OVERALL revenue in their respective athletic departments.
  • This lack of increasing funds will exacerbate the ability to continue funding the other sports that are funded from football revenue.

My question, relative to football, is whether Clemson has the money to keep their place on the “good side”, or is sent packing to the “bad side”.

I'm pretty sure almost any of the 64 basketball teams in the men's NCAA basketball tournament could have won it.

If you want to see what it's going to look like in the future, glance at women's basketball where only a dozen have a chance to win it all.... and maybe less than that.

I agree with Charles. It will only get worse in football and basketball. .... causes by NIL and E$PN paying certain conferences more than others. Follow the $$$$. It time non-STUDENT-athletes play in minor league systems. Let's return to true STUDENT-Athletes. And make E$PN pay all conferences equitably or equally.

More upsets than ever, and not a single 1 or 2 seed in the final four, and three of the four have never been in the Final Four! Florida Atlantic had never even won a tournament game before!

NIL may be great for the athletes, but the bottom line is...they want to play. With the freedom of the portal, players aren't going to stay at a school where they aren't getting significant playing time.

With the coming of the 12 team playoff in football, I think this trend will be more commonplace in football, too.

it may actually level the playing field

    1

    Mar 28, 2023, 6:39 AM

some of these "lesser schools" are not small and have a lot of alumni who can afford to buy players.

The transfer rules are likely to keep the blue bloods from hoarding players.

I'm not a fan of either change, but I think both of these factors will actually give the non traditional powerhouse schools more of a chance to win. Not sure if this years final four is a "one off" or if this will be the future norm. Once we hit 12 teams in football playoff, we are going to have some different schools in the conversation.

Re: Did anyone else see Charles Barkley's comments on the

So NIL and transfer have given us parity in the NCAA Tournament. At lest as evidenced by this years Final Four. There have been some great close games this year to be sure. But unless you're a real basketball fan, meaning you'll watch no matter who is playing, I doubt this Final Four will be that big of a draw outside the towns where those schools reside. We can pull for Miami because they're from the ACC, and some may even watch because of that. CBS must be cringing at the thought of a Miami-Florida Atlantic championship game that will reduce their market to half a state.
Other than the remote connection of Miami being an ACC school, I don't have a dog in the fight and most likely will not watch at all if they are not in the final. UConn-SD State? Uconn-Fla Atl? so what? Once again, if your a true BB fan, you'll watch.

And the powers that be THINK, they actually THINK this is what we want to watch in football. So suppose the same forces here apply to football. How many would tune in for a Boise ST-West Virginia championship game? Outside of Boise and Morganton, I'm thinking not many.

He is dead on. The new “Gap” will basically separate teams that could justify new divisions of some sort. If this is not corrected quickly I’m afraid college sports will never be the same. Reading some of the comments on here it looks like many are in for a surprise. Dabo and Saban have expressed their grievances but not sure anything can be done at this point. NIL on paper was not the worst of ideas but most knew that was not going to be the way it would actually go.

It is certainly going to put even more emphasis on coaching and developing players, particularly if you cannot effectively compete in the arms race. Great to see so many well-coached college basketball teams compete effectively without having all 4*/5* players.

Now coaches really will have to earn their money and you better have the right ones leading your teams and drawing the full potential out of your players.

    No, it won't.

A coach that develops a player will just lose him to a team that can buy him.

There's now even less incentive to try to develop talent for the future.

That is one guy I find funny, but then try to tune out on serious stuff. He's a tough guy, and was a good player also considering he was short compared to competition. But, man, he surely must have been hit in the head a lot while playing because he truly says some stupid stuff.

In one ear and out the other with Barkley as most talking heads should be.

He's right about as often as Lee Corso in football predictions.
