Dabo vs Todd Rutherford

May 28, 2015, 12:53 PM

Below is the content of an article written in The Palmetto Ledger in Charleston, SC. You can see the full article and others at: http://www.palmettoledger.com/?s=

WHO HAS A RIGHT TO GET OFFENDED?

This is absolutely getting ridiculous. Yesterday, Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney was forced to cancel an appearance to attend a Palmetto Family Council event where he was going to receive an award to recognize the great work of his All-in Team Foundation.

The Mission Statement of Mr. Swinney’s foundation is “to raise awareness of critical education and health issues in order to change lives of people across the state of South Carolina.” He is going to be recognized specifically for his foundation’s work on one of their focus areas, The Family Effect. Unfortunately, due to certain individuals, this is not going to happen.

Once news broke that Dabo was going to attend this event, S.C. House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford issued a statement that Dabo should not appear because he believes the Palmetto Family Council opposes same-sex marriage, abortions and often aligns with republicans.

Come on Mr. Rutherford, really? First of all, as the S.C. House Minority Leader you should be enamored with running our State government and not concerned with certain events a citizen is invited to attend in his spare time. Secondly, how does a citizen attending an event to receive a reward physically offend you, or anyone else, in any way, shape or form? Sounds like a bunch of hurtfeelioma to me.

Have we really gotten to this point in this Country? In this State? Just because something ‘offends’ someone, we have to reconsider, change, or decline invitations? Regardless of the view points of the Palmetto Family Council, Mr. Swinney’s award was simply in recognition of the work his foundation did to help other South Carolinians; it is not political.

Mr. Rutherford, I would suspect that Dabo’s foundation has done more for the citizens of South Carolina than you have ever done. The only thing of note you have accomplished in your political career is getting a fellow S.C. House colleague’s DUI charges dismissed based on a pebble in a shoe. Congratulations Sir, all you did was rob your fellow South Carolinians of the chance to hear from a good role model.

In the end, Mr. Swinney could have disregarded Mr. Rutherford and not succumbed to public pressure, but he chose not to. Why? He did not want this to be a distraction to the University or the Football Team. If Dabo would have engaged in this nonsense, who knows how this could have ended or what impact it would have had on Clemson or the Football Team. Instead he squashed it, declined the invitation, and will move on. That was a good decision made by a better leader than Todd Rutherford will ever be.

I'm confused....

May 28, 2015, 12:56 PM

so the award Dabo was supposed to get was not for his work against gays and suppressing minorities? I thought this award was from the Palmetto Family Council.

Franc, how do they suppress minorities?

Stopped reading at "was forced to"

That's the issue with this whole debate right there. Dabo wasn't forced to do anything. Someone telling you that you're wearing an ugly shirt doesn't mean that you've been forced to burn it or never wear it again.

And if he was forced, it was by Clemson.

Summa cum laude. Magna cum laude. The radio’s too loudy.

Score another one for the loss of liberty, diversity, and

religious freedom in this country (in the name of liberty, diversity, and religious freedom of course).

As an aside, I would hope that this legislator would be chastised by the powers that be in state government for using his position in the state government to publicly grandstand against public and non-political figures of notoriety. Trying to push an anti-discriminatory piece of legislation through the SC chambers is one thing, but his argument needs to be with other legislators, not university employees removed from this process.

Personally, I've had the pleasure of seeing this legislator perform some admirable work among his community over the years, but this was a cheap tactic unbecoming of a person in his position, and sets a bad precedent for the future.

Lost a measure of respect for Coach Swinney for backing down on this one. It's a sad day in this country when the support of sick perversion equals political correctness.

I highly doubt he cares what a pathetic Chicken fan who is too ashamed of his school to get a real screen name thinks.

That must have hit too close to home, clem. Just touchy, or defending your sexual preferences? BTW, what is a real screen name, lol?

You got him bro

He's totally gay, let's give him a swirly!

+1 but I think the writer missed the point.

May 28, 2015, 8:14 PM

For a man of God these two verses sum up our freedom, goal and somewhat our responsibility to God.

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

"Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery." (Luke 16:18)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, with two ex wives I live with that sin every day, fyi.

May 28, 2015, 8:26 PM

That has nothing to do with the subject matter. It's about the liberty our salvation provides by the fulfillment of the law by our Savior. Dabo had the liberty to attend the ceremony but I just don't think he believes it would be expedient.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree

May 28, 2015, 8:28 PM

He could have gone, but it would have been a bad move on his part. I also think Dabo probably falls a little to the left of this group, based on his previous statements regarding gay teammates.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's the job of The Holy Spirit to convict man of sin.

May 28, 2015, 8:44 PM

It's not my job to tell gays that homosexuality is a sin, if they don't know it then the blame lies squarely on God. I have no tools to convict, I have no experience nor voice which can be heard within the heart of another. Sin is not relative, it's absolute, it's simply having a will other than that of God's. That narrows it down pretty well.

You know exactly how I feel about politics. Getting involved in politics is just not edifying for me. I believe Dabo feels the same way. How much did your cousin's lifestyle change or alter your opinion about gays and the homosexual lifestyle.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not much actually

May 28, 2015, 8:54 PM

I've known gay people my entire life. My cousin told me she was gay when she was in high school, but that she knew no one would accept her. She did her honest to God best to be straight. She even went so far as to get married, but she just couldn't keep up the act. She told me it was mentally, physically and spiritually exhausting.

So, when people say, "Oh, he/she just decided to be gay", I can assure you, my cousin, at least in high school, would have preferred to be straight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't buy into some of the tripe about being gay...

May 28, 2015, 10:49 PM

as being a choice. I think mankind as a whole has defective genetics. I was born a liar but I fight the urge. Same with stealing, cheating, drug and alcohol abuse and just about every other sin known to mankind.

I guess me and the gays are perfect for the maximum dose of blood atonement. The heart of man is a desperately wicked abode. As far as those who draw the line at homosexuals getting into heaven the line has already been established by God. On one side of the line there you'll find every man that is perfect but there's only One Man that belongs there because of His nature and life. That's the side of the line where there's a cross on which God's Only Begotten Son died, on the other side of the line is where the rest of us are.

May 28, 2015, 9:11 PM

If you are supporting ghey rights and feel that strongly about it, publically French Kiss a man on the mouth since you are clearly catering to that populous for votes since that is the political trend of the time.

If you refuse, I will tell you are a fraud, only siding with gheys, and not showing real sentiment to their plight.

Either way he loses: he's the George Wallace of the day. Compromising his integrity for the flavor stick of the moment.

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

He's catering to the gays for votes

May 28, 2015, 9:14 PM

That doesn't seem like it would get you very far in politics, since, statistically speaking, they are a small part of the population.

If I stand up for gay rights do I have to kiss a dude as well, because my wife is going to be mad if I make out with a guy who is hotter than me, it just wouldn't seem fair to her.

Regarding Todd Rutherford.......

May 28, 2015, 11:23 PM

......just do a little due diligence concerning his involvement with the former SC State Board of Trustees that raped that university's financial affairs. Nothing else needs to be said regarding Todd Rutherford and his baggage. He's an example of everything a public servant should not be, but he finds every opportunity to step into a bully pulpit!
