Dabo is a victim of his own success. Bear with me.

When Dabo took over the program it was stagnant. Everyone knows the story. Ford had rebuilt Clemson the right way after not so right to win his 1981 national championship. Enter an illegitimate grand child fathered by a former player that Danny beat within an inch of his life and the exit was the only answer. Ken Hatfield took a national championship roster and lost two games. The program started a slide that didn’t end until Tommy Bowden was fired.

Dabo inherits a dumpster fire. Clemson is behind with facilities, coaches, players, and money. Dabo starts to ask for shiny new toys and receives. He made so many great changes and didn’t have to borrow a dime for any. He got private donations to make Clemson’s facilities the talk of college football. The blue chip players started coming. Tahj Boyd flipping from Oregon to Clemson was the first big time recruit in decades. That opened the door for CJ Spiller and it was an avalanche after. Dabo recruited high class, high character, blue chip recruits and hired the best coordinators and position coaches money could buy. It culminated in reaching the mountain top twice and coming just short four other times.

The slide. The ruling of NIL and unlimited portal use reshaped college football into another NFL. The portal is free agency. NIL is just paying players on top of revenue sharing. I get Tom Liginbill’s point; teams securing instant starters though the portal are tampering. They’re inking deals before the kids even hit the portal. Dabo doesn’t bend rules like that. Until the NCAA puts a handle on it; Dabo won’t be able to compete in the portal. I guarantee Riley Leonard had no plans to entered the portal before Freeman called and offered him 7 figures to transfer. He was sold before he ever entered his name for transfer. This is what we are fighting. This is why my stance on the portal is fluid. I hate the portal. I also recognize to win we have to evolve. I hope the ncaa puts strict rules on portal use and makes tampering a focus.

To the point of my post. We have been spoiled by Dabo. 10+ years of 10 wins. Six college football playoff trips. Two national championships and could have easily won four. Three generational quarterbacks almost back to back to back. We got spoiled. Dabo preached the best is the standard. We aren’t getting the best on-field product. We’re getting good but not the best. Part of it is nepotism hires and scholarships. Loyalty to upperclassmen beyond understanding.

I trust Dabo to get it all straightened out. He needs help from the NCAA. We need stringent guidelines on portal recruiting and NIL dollars. Until then it’s going to be a tough ride. We also need another generational Qb. DJ and Cade were supposed to be. Whether it’s development, coaching, or missing on a recruit remains to be seen. That’s the frustrating part. Knowing greatness is here but is handcuffed by a system that is broken. I cannot wait for the next mountaintop. It’s coming. Just have faith.

Nobody said they grow on trees. You assume much and make weird arguments. I said we had three back to back to back. Maybe USuC doesn’t teach reading comprehension?! I never said we had to have generational Qb’s. Many national championships have been won with game managers. I’d be happy with a Haynes King. You make “ignore user” a real option. I’ve never used it. Considering it today! 🤣

But our offense is littered with four and five stars. Our classes have a higher star rating composite than most classes. Cade, Randall, Moore, Westco, Williams, Stellato, Brinningstool, Mafah, Brown, Hanafin are all 4-5 stars.

No, we have been hurt because Dabo has made some really bad decisions.

4
8

Sep 6, 2024, 10:16 AM

Most notably:

-Hiring unqualified assistants with little to no relevant experience.
-Refusing to use the transfer portal.
-Not embracing NIL.
-Running his mouth when he shouldn't.

The result is a problem on a fairly sharp decline over the past few years.

Dabo isn't a victim here. We are where we are because of choices HE has made.

He is paid $11 million a year to do better.

You make good points about NIL and the portal. I do not believe that is the entire story though. I look at recent Clemson teams and the product I see on the field pales in comparison to the Clemson teams in the 2013-2020 era. I believe those teams could compete with the mercenary teams of today. The difference imo is depth, recruiting and development/coaching, mostly on the offensive side of the ball. It is fairly simple and obvious the weak areas. I believe we need better recruiters on the offensive side of the ball. We especially need help in recruiting more mobile QB depth. Our offense has excelled with mobile running QB’s but we have been recruiting pocket guys. That doesn’t work. We need better evaluation and recruiting and depth at the WR position. We much better development at WR. We need experienced coaching for the WR’s, which means at least replacing Grisham. Our recruiting at RB has also been somewhat suspect. We need better recruiters as offensive assistants at WR and RB. I think Dabo has done well to bring Luke in and expect him to shore up the OL. Finally, Dabo needs to stop giving as many walk-on scholarships out and recruiting non-D-1 players (legacy’s, etc) to fill depth. This would allow about 8-10 more slots per year. He needs to get a better portal plan to fill these slots with depth, and yes to include offering NIL packages like everyone else is doing. Dabo has long praised the development of kids after one year of “power hour.” Recruiting from the portal gets kids who are D-1 ready bc they have gone through “ power hour” at another school, versus HS recruits who are not physically ready. This is a very obvious fix.

Agree with most of what you say, however he will get NO help from the NCAA. In fact, at the top tier in college football the NCAA will have no say so.

I Pretty Much Agree!

Sep 6, 2024, 1:00 PM

Said another way: "he has set the bar so high that a 9 win season; that gets a raise at other schools is looked down upon"!

Prior to the 9 win season; Clemson went how many years with double digit wins? It was only surpassed "at the time" by Nick Saban's Alabama teams.

He is 100% a victim of his own success!

I think many on here though no fault of their own; just got on board with Clemson football when the winning started. Due to when they were born or because Clemson football had not given them time to jump on board.

For people like me who have been on board pre-1981 to now - "this is easily the best era of Clemson football"!
9 wins is a bad season is something we couldn't contemplate prior to 2014. We hadn't won a National Championship since 1981 and had some bad seasons in between. Just getting to a bowl game and beating SCAR was the goal.

FFWD to today and people just "letting the man have it for not being perfect" and it appears to me he is 100% a victim of his own success. Because, we could easily still be in the era of: "just wanting to be above .500, or just want to be able to get to a decent bowl game. All very real things that used to be the standard pre-Dabo.

You are 100% correct. It is also 100% correct to say this is a “what have you done for me lately gig.” High expectations come with folks making well north of $10 million per year. Ed Orgeron lasted how long at LSU after winning a national championship? Gene Chizik was fired how long after winning a national championship?

No one that any will take serious are calling for Dabo’s job…yet. But Dabo has shown what at least some interpret as an increasing level of arrogance and stubbornness to adapt to the changing landscape of college football like other programs having success have done. Dabo has doubled down repeatedly on his philosophy, which is different than other elite schools, and so far the product on the field does not back up his chosen path. If Dabo were to decide to donate about $7-8 million of his annual salary to acquiring and retaining players through NIL, he might have a very long leash. But as long as he is pocketing $10 million plus a year, expectations will be high…very high. I am pulling for Dabo to succeed doing it his way. Time will tell.

This post couldn't be more wrong

Sep 6, 2024, 12:36 PM

First.... Danny got fired because he wanted athletic dorms to house only football players with amenities. It was actually quite forward thinking at the time. Think of it as a 1980s version of the Allen Reeves Football complex but with dorm rooms for players as well. When he couldn't get Max Lennon on board he tried to go around him and Lennon felt the "coach" of the football team couldn't be bigger than the prez.... hence the hatred for Max Lennon. Danny was fired due to a power struggle with the president of the University, plain and simple.

Second, CJ Spiller was here from 2006-2009. Tahj Boyd was here from 2010-2013. CJ predates Boyd not the other way around. It was Spiller who was the first BIG TIME recruit to choose Clemson in the modern era... not Tajh.

What you are right about is the portal will continue to be a thorn in Clemson's side. Even if we did choose to pay for play, we dont have the resources (aka big donors) to compete with the biggest programs when it comes time to come up with the best offer for elite QBs, WRs, or RBs. The best we can do there is choose to take aim at a select few players that can bolster our weakest positions... and allocate a good portion of our $$$ resources there. Or maybe wait for more strict regulation (dont hold your breath). Regardless, paying what it takes to get the top QB in high school is becoming a more difficult task by the day.

Good post, but it wasnt all Dabo.

I remember DW4 saying that Chad Morris recruited him, and the great receivers were attributed to Jeff Scott. With those guys gone, we have struggled to get the best.

The portal is the death of CFB as we knew it, but we need to adapt or be banished to "other 125 teams" who will never compete for the National Championship.

Fabulous post. 100% true. I’ve been a fan forever and Iptay since 1978. I’ve seen the good bad ugly and fabulous. This is the reason I fully support Dabo. We would have not gotten to the mountain top if not for him and him alone. It seems we have missed on the last two QBs and possibly the last two OC. I don’t understand why our offense continues to struggle. Thanks for the Defense over the last 3 years that has saved us. I am hoping our offense turns the corner at some point. On paper it seems we should be better on O.
