CU Culture vs Portal Culture

Getting players from the portal to fill gaps in our roster is going to be a real challenge. I'm not saying we can't do it without harm to our culture, but it will be a tough thing to navigate.
I'm afraid that we will identify someone with potential as a player, but find he's looking for an NIL deal for big bucks - particularly if we are in dire need of a player to fill a position. He'll know (or his advisor) that we really need someone like him and will want to "negotiate" something that we would then (if we agreed to a deal) have to go out and find a booster/sponsor to provide.... maybe difficult to do at Clemson.
If we did come to an arrangement, the player is then dropped into the locker room among a team with players who are very interested in a degree and accepted scholarship offers without an NIL deal in order to play for CU. I don't think that recipe will make a very good stew.
I trust Dabo to get through this mess, but I certainly don't envy his job..... it's going to be a nightmare.

Don't forget many of are players have NIL deals. They post them on their Instagram.

It's absurd to me that some Clemson fans think there are only 15-20 players each year who fit our "culture" and no other player possibly does simply because they didn't come to Clemson out of high school. High horse much?

When you combine culture fit with interest from the player and the talent to contribute at Clemson, those 3 things probably make the list pretty short.
With that said, it's more than 15-20 and I think the adjustment from the staff may need to be entertaining the idea of offering more of the guys who fit all 3 categories instead of just offering the top priority of what is needing and then moving only after some tell you no.

If that’s all we sign then it stands to reason that Dabo and his staff think that is how many “fit”. They have to not only fit the culture, they have to fit the roster needs as well. I trust Dabo and Co and their judgement.

That is a separate thing.
What we are discussing here is some Clemson fans with the idea that we cannot sign portal players because they think all portal players are bad people. It's the most ridiculous thing ever.

But all of those things affect the number of players recruited. Culture fit isn’t the only factor restricting class size.

I'm not discussing class size. I just used 15-20 because that's a normal class size for us. You can input whatever number you want there and my point remains whether it's 15 or 30.

If the culture was so strong, then why do we have so many guys transferring out?
These kids in the portal aren’t bad guys just because they didn’t pick Clemson out of high school.

Look around the country.
Clemson is not on the high end of transfers out.

We have been over this repeatedly. Most of the guys transferring out of Clemson are doing so to increase their playing time. The 3 guys headed to USF will almost certainly play more there than they did here. Their decisions really have nothing to do with culture. The guys in the portal probably aren’t bad guys. They are either looking for more playing time or they found out they aren’t a fit for their current team. But before Dabo takes one of them he will have to undergo the same scrutiny as a high school recruit. It may not be a case where they didn’t choose Clemson out of high school, they may not have been offered by Clemson coming out of high school for whatever reason - position need, culture fit, grades, etc. If that is the case they probably won’t get offered coming out of the portal unless the original issue was lack of need at his position and that may have changed.

I'll Clarify

It's not so much "our" culture as it is "Dabo's" culture - or at least the one he's trying to build and maintain. He believes in (and is selling) honor, integrity, family, education, etc. and thinks that by building that foundation in the program he can influence and improve the lives of the young men who go through our FB program. It appears to have worked with many of our past and present players and is apparent to anyone who takes time to look.
What I'm saying is that is a completely different culture than the portal dwellers are likely to have and mixing the 2 cultures within the team will be difficult to keep cohesive.
I'm not particularly criticizing the players in the portal (they have a right to make that decision) - just expressing what I see as potential friction.

the culture will last s long as it enables Clemson to win The portal and NIL debacles are a fact so get used to them We cant win with one hand tied behind our back while everyone else is using them If we dont step up and compete with the top teams in every available way the culture we hear so much about will be spoken about only in the past tense

entered the portal did so because they didn't fit our culture? If they did fit our culture (and you would think they do because Dabo recruited them), then it stands to reason there are other players in the portal that would also fit our culture. And I'm not convinced that 90% of players wouldn't fit, although there are certainly many that don't.

No, as I clarified, I don't believe they fit the culture that Dabo is trying to build.
