from the HS ranks. Only use portal to sprinkle in for unavoidable needs in today's environment. Only schools that are a total shit-show should rely on portal more than that. And then, only temporarily. Russian roulette to depend on the portal year after year for the majority of your talent acquisition. fsu is learning that the hard way.....
You can find stories from both sides. Just like HS recruiting, you better assess well so they "hit" as CDS likes to say.
A way better comparable to CLEM would be how BAMA, UGA and OSU have used it. NCSU isn't a comp.

BUILDING through the portal will fail in the long run.
SUPPLEMENTING with ~4-6/year is a must to compensate for positional deficiencies and/or defections.........which EVERYONE has EVERY year.

I believe to get the best players from the portal, a huge NIL bank is absolutely necessary, or you'll be wasting time and money!!!

The aim is still to get good players on your campus to stay as long as possible. With any luck, and likely NIL $$ you keep good players around. And, of course, you bring in new good players yearly as well.
As you said here, "plug in any unforeseen gaps with portal players" only if needed!

It assumes that every team's needs are the same. They aren't.
It assumes steady graduation rates and transfer rates across the board. Those things don't happen.
It assumes every HC has the same philosophy and the same methodology. They don't.

Exactly right!
Honestly, if we had even a Kelly Bryant level of QB play the last few seasons, I think we make it to the playoffs. And, a bunch of the nonsense goes away. I don't ever think KB would have beaten really good defenses, but he would have beaten the teams we should beat.
I think, with our defense last year, if we had a Tajh Boyd level QB - we likely challenge for a NC. My opinion, not law.
All the folks acting as if, Georgia was all portal or Michigan was nothing but portal are fooling themselves. They were not. They did fill some valuable spots at times; i'll give someone that - but the portal hasn't been the end all be all. Joe Burrow transferred before it was called the portal- doesn't count.
And, he went to a place with what would become 4 NFL WR's and a RB and TE destined for the league. Two of those WR's All Pro. Count that one player on a team full of players LSU recruited. Clemson could easily have been the same way - with a better offense the last few years.
5-star by recruiting ranking! So, can't say we fell off like that. 5-star players aren't going to schools that "aren't relavant" in today's world - get real!
