Other than football

Apr 2, 2015, 7:24 AM

Our athletic programs aren't competitive anymore. Have we spent so much money on building our football program that the others have Suffered? Don't get me wrong, if I had to choose 1 to excell in, it would be football but we have fallen so far in a relatively short amount of time, it makes me wonder.

Correct me if I'm wrong

but weren't we ACC Champs in Men's Futbol (soccer)?

Basketball (both) and baseball have definitely taken a dive.

You're right, I guess I should have qualified the "big" 3 revenue generating sports. Didn't mean to minimize the accomplishments of our soccer team.

It looks clear that

Apr 2, 2015, 7:43 AM

we're funding football to be at a top 10 level and some of the other sports like baseball and basketball are playing catch up on facilities/ talent. Most of the $ revolves around football so if we have to choose, that's fine with me. Football is the main sport I like anyway. We likely have 3-5 more years and some coaching changes before baseball and basketball change their trends up.

This is such an underrated post

So accurate. You hit the nail right on the head with all of that.

Hasn't Tiger Field had some construction done to it

3 or 4 off-seasons in a row? Maybe there are other, less visible facilities that are falling behind.

One has nothing to do with the other... False choice

Apr 2, 2015, 7:50 AM

Football is paying its way. Basketball and baseball are being subsidized big time by football revenues. They are getting more uplift from football's success, not being harmed by it.

The issue is the lag time in the trickle down effect from football. Now that the $ is flowing in and the momentum has been built by the football franchise's resurrection, the other sports will benefit and are already benefitting. It will show in the near future too. By near, I mean 2-3 years. Watch and see.

We have Golf, Tennis, Soccer in decent shape. After Legget leaves this year and the facility upgrades are completed for baseball, it will change for the positive in a very dramatic way. Once the LJ facilities are finished and the verdict is finally in on Brad as to whether he can turn this ting around, BB will take a turn for the positive too. It may be with or without Brad, so that is still TBD, but in 3 years, the BB program will either be on the upswing or a dynamic, high profile coach will be hire to give it a shot in the arm!

Watch and have patience. Rome was not built in a day. We have endured 25+ years in the wilderness due to the football franchise's lethargy/mediocrity. Everything suffered as a result. Those times are gone. Thank God and Dabo and the foresight on TB and our AD at the time to take a chance on Dabo. Otherwise, who knows how much longer we would be waiting for this resurrection!

Be happy that it is now in full swing! Enjoy the ride... ??

wow - good post and I hope you are spot on with those statements.

I have literally quit watching bball and BBall due to their pathetic performances. Both teams make me nauseated when I watch how they screw up the game and seem to know almost nothing about the sport they play. I will be glad to watch then they figure out what they're doing.

The GREAT part - is that CLEMSON is finally a FOOTBALL school once again.

I like your optimism, but you're going to blame our baseball

and basketball woes on the football program not being at the level we've expected (until recently)?

I think that's a stretch.

I was pointing out that a good AD and successful, big money generating sport like football or basketball can lift all tides and often does.

I disagree with your statement that men's basketball is subsidized by football. I read a report several months ago that men's basketball produces @a $4 million profit due to ticket sales(yes, we need to increase sales) and Clemson's
share of the ESPN TV contract related to basketball. Also, we receive a share of the ACC Tournament money and the
NCAA Tournament money which I read would be @ $1.6 million for each ACC victory. Remember the ACC is an equal
revenue sharing conference. Football and men's basketball are the only two profit making sports at Clemson. Hopefully,
with the improved facilities basketball will produce even more
wins and more profit to benefit all sports at Clemson.

Re: One has nothing to do with the other... False choice

Apr 3, 2015, 6:28 AM

Fair enough. Basketball wasn't in the red.

In terms of throwing off sufficient cash for major renovations and building new facilities, I don't think Clemson football and Clemson basketball were generating as much profit as FSU or Auburn or Ohio State during the Bowden era in order to keep up with the Joneses. I should have made the point as more of.a "relative to other programs" kind of explanation.

Looks like plenty of construction going on around here

in basketball and baseball you ask me. And i guess the $$ that helped us win 10 games each of the last 4 years was wasted, because everyone would have no problem with us going 8-5

Re: Other than football

Apr 2, 2015, 10:21 PM

I don't think that's completely true..I mean we still have on of the nicer baseball stadiums around and we are upgrading the player side of it which should help...baseball issues aren't the facilities I don't think. Basketball we kind of went the wrong way ..we spent all that money on LJ about 10 years ago and here we are redoing it again....we could have spent the money and had a brand new arena by now..still spending just maybe went about it wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can't and shouldn't blame football...

Apr 3, 2015, 6:48 AM

for the failure of basketball and baseball. It's not as if we've been broke.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True, but relative to everyone else in order ....

Apr 3, 2015, 8:03 AM

to really excel across multiple programs, you need at least one consistent top 15 caliber, revenue generating program as your anchor. At Clemson, if not basketball, then it has to be football. That is our bread and butter.

And until recently, over the last 20 years we have been mostly a second tier power with glimpses of top 10 potential only to fall back again. This is what has changed for the better and with that change, it will only help put wind at the backs of our other programs. There's room for error now in terms of having an off year or two on the revenue front (which usually means poor performance) for Basketball and Baseball and we can still weather the $ drought and invest in them using the extra umpffff we get from football carrying the banner.

Before, the discussion would always be about trade offs and football always won that argument over basketball or baseball.
