How long has it been since they weren’t ranked at the beginning of a season?
Not sure. Were they ranked last year?
I seem to remember being surprised that they were ...

Nopee, never ranked last year. Even when there were only about 30 schools playing, they were not top 25 material.
Coastal WAS ranked.
So was NC State, Kansas State, Indiana, Northwestern, North Carolina and Tennessee ... you know, those other bottom feeder schools.
They were the only 2-win team outside "the war" era to accept a bowl invite.

Vandy was the only other SEC team not ranked but all of that will probably change this year. They will figure out how to get all of the SEC teams ranked.

Which part is in doubt?
All of those teams listed were ranked at least once during the season... save the coots.
South Carolina as a 2-8 team. They initially accepted an invite to the Gasprilla Bowl as a 2-8 team. The backed out for "covid" concerns. I did some digging and while during WWII you had various "schools" playing in local "bowls" as 3-1 teams and 3-0 teams. I could not find any 2 win bowl teams, but I can rule out that possibility. I can say they would have broken the .200 barrier for the worst bowl team ever...

It’s still early. They’ll have the “most arrested” fan base rankings later.....coots will be either #1 or #2.

We need all the help we can get, and playing a ranked opponent from the SEC to end the season could be a tremendous advantage.
It won't happen, of course, but fingers crossed!
