Dabo will get the last laugh regarding his portal stance

If just a few things go our way this year: - Above average QB play (doesn't need to be Watson level play) - Our Freshman WRs are legit playmakers - We remain relatively healthy at key spots - Decent kicking game
I'd put the chances of it happening at 35-40%, which isn't horrible odds.

Concerning Dabos position on the portal

This past off season was not a season where the portal/cost of a portal player was needed at Clemson. Moot point.
His commitment to his own players carries a lot of weight with players and parents.
However, I really believe CDS when he said basically if we need a player due to graduation, injury, etc, we will look at portal players who ‘fit’.
The time will come at some point.

Commitment to current players

What does that mean when it comes to the portal? Every year Clemson brings in 15-28 players from high school to compete for playing time with current roster, and many times those freshman play over upper classmen (many cases at Clemson). Why is it any different? The job of the coach is to try and bring in as good or better players each year than on the roster. Also if I take a job at American Airlines right out of school and then decide in a year that I think I really wanted to be at Southwest should Southwest just decide nah not hiring that guy he didn’t want us straight out of school, I’m going to stick with the marginal team member I have. I know this is an off the way example. I just don’t get how this not taking portal players somehow is “taking care of current team” when you are trying to also bring in 5* to take jobs away anyway. Or is it the mindset of just not using any NIL dollars on a player until he stays here a year to retain?

I think it is more in line with a senior manager who just had his top performer in a specific domain leave to take another job (i.e. NFL). He has a very successful employee on staff who is well liked by the rest of the team and has shown the potential to be a top performer. He has two choices:
1) Pay more to hire a top performer away from a competitor, potentially impacting the team dynamic.
2) Use your resources to promote from within, taking a chance on the employee not living up to the potential.
Neither is a wrong choice and both come with risks. Dabo believes in what he has built at Clemson and that loyalty to his performers will result in a better program long term.
If we can’t match the salary of the top 5 teams, why not set yourself apart in another way.

would make me more happy than exactly what you said happens.
Shut all these blabbering mouths who seem to think the game has passed Dabo and he is not going to keep up without portal/NIL.
If he can bring a elite level team to the season, make the CFP, make it to championship maybe win the dadgum game....he will have earned his right to tell them to all off, but he will simply say "I told you it can happen, and so it was"
It will be the most joyous and exciting event in college football history IMO. Let's go Tigers!!

Cade just being notably better than last year (not significantly better just notably better) would qualify for above average QB play. B level play is all we need.

Saying, we have brought in 3 (at least) quality position coaches that will change the dynamics for our seemingly struggling key players.

Agree. A few less turnovers and maybe 50-60 more passing yards a game, which having healthy receivers and better o-line will help magnanimously with this.
If you look at the top ten offenses from last year, I think Texas was like #9 with around 465 yards a game. We averaged 402 yards which was ranked somewhere between 50 and 60 overall. So literally if he throws 50-60 more yards a game we will have close to a top ten offense.

I actually believe Dabo either hangs it up or takes a break from coaching by 2029. I think he can’t stand the way college football is now and it’s only going it get worse.

I hear you Jcantrell86® ... I have often wondered if Dabo will leave Clemson for the B1G or SEC if Clemson ends up being unable to compete due to player-pay NIL variances between the ACC-SEC-B1G that will result from TV network revenue NIL player payments. Hopefully not.

The BIG and SEC are some of the biggest users if the portal and NIL. His dta cebin those is unlikely to get him another HC job.

That comes across a bit harsh. Every piece of college athletics is rapidly changing. Dabo has earned the right to try to maintain some form of his envisioned environment. I think he believes this is still currently possible. I also believe his character is such that he would not ride the program into the ground at the sake of his conviction. He would leave first, and he should be respected for that.
He has made some big staff moves. Let’s see what transpires this season and next.

Hope it doesn’t happen this way, but after Clay Swinney’s eligibility is completed I’m a bit concerned that one big part of Dabo’s motivation to keep coaching will be gone.
Grad student coaching opportunities for his boys should provide enough personal motivation to keep Dabo on the sidelines for us for another few years after Clay is done playing.
Like you, I could see Dabo rid8ng off into the sunset in another 5 to 10 years.
Also, I don’t foresee Dabo coaching anywhere else after his time at Clemsonmis done. Dabo will have accumulated truly impressive net worth in another decade. Like you, I can’t foresee Dabo being interested in an even more pro-like college football environment that is likely to be the case in ~ 2030 and beyond.

If we're lucky and all that happens we get in the playoffs; that probably doesn't equal a Natty. At the elite level the margins are razer thin it's like olympic swimming where hundredths of seconds separate gold from 4th. One player could be the difference in a natty; think back on our last two and you can probably name a handful that meant the difference between winning it all and just a great season. You're much more likely to find those guys if you avail yourself with every opportunity to source talent.

right now would be the absolute best thing that could happen to college football. Big time donors at all these others schools would suddenly realize, "Hey, wait just a dang minute, we don't HAVE to throw all this money at unproven kids to win it all!" NIL could suddenly become somewhat sane again, maybe.
NAHHHHH, greed will always be out there. And I'm talking about mostly the adults in the room, not the kids who play the game themselves. People will try to buy a championship until it is proven multiple years that it can't be done on any sort of consistent basis.
It does occasionally work, though. See: 2019 LSU.
Absorbing a bunch of speeding tickets seems to be a better strategery. See: 2021 and 2022 Georgia.

Dabo makes $11 million a year with the expectation that we are one of the top few programs in college football year in and year out, while developing high character young men who represent Clemson well on and off the field.
He isn’t achieved that standard in quite some time.
This isn’t hard to understand.
