Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 1:22 PM

"When Brent Venables got the Oklahoma job, my take away was Oklahoma almost always gets the coach right. And, he's an Oklahoma guy. And, he was good at Clemson. He'll be fine. That's a good solid choice.

Not only is it not a solid choice, I would move on at the end of the year and get Matt Rhule. It is a disaster. He is not a head coach. Folks, when you can't get your side of the ball right, 49-0 to Texas. It's a whiff. By the way, it's OK. Some people are born to be vice presidents. Some people are born to be CEOs. Some are vice presidents. It can't look like this. Tackling. Coverages. It's a disaster and by the way, with the transfer portal now, do not be patient. Kids will move in a second. The Sooners will get cherry picked. By the end of this season they will lose 20 players.
Especially offensive guys."

Venables is coaching at Oklahoma. It's a great job, but the fans have had it so good for so long, a losing season is a total disaster. Cowherd is just trying to get on the right side of the narrative which will be rock solid when Oklahoma loses two more games and So Cal/Lincoln Riley win two more games. A first time coach at any traditional power better win big right off the bat. (Napier is flirting with disaster at UofF and Florida has never even been close to the CFP.)

I think Venables has the AD and the Stoops Family support. That should help. Coach V. is really earning his money these days. His buyout is $42M.

Imagine Dabo decides to leave in the next next 12 months for some non-football higher calling. Neff picks Streeter to replace Dabo and in the middle of next season Clemson is 3-3, dead last in the ACC at 0-3 and a couple of our losses have been real a$$ whippings.

Good luck to Coach V.

Go Tigers!!

If Neff picks Streeter to replace Dabo after 1 year as OC

Oct 10, 2022, 1:56 PM

the rumblings would start immediately.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The truth is Dabo could have a high calling

Oct 10, 2022, 2:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables ]

He’s the best coach ever but if the Holy Spirit called him to a higher calling, I believe Dabo would take it!

Let’s pray his ministry stays as the Clemson program & players!

Let’s go Tigers! Thank you Jesus for letting us use Dabo!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We keep getting better & better everyday, in every way!
“The only disability is a bad Attitude” Dabo Swinney!!
Let’s Go Tigers!

Personally, I would not call it a “great job”.

Oct 10, 2022, 5:34 PM [ in reply to Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables ]

It’s a very high paying job, but a very high stress job as well. That school demands W’s… Brent has his work cut out for him, to say the least.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its really not about Venables as much as it would be about

Oct 10, 2022, 2:51 PM [ in reply to Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables ]

Rhule if they decided to do that. Rhule is taylor made for college football. Wherever he goes will get a definite boost. Very hard to turn your nose up to being a top program every year.

A little premature to draw this conclusion, but then again

he gave up 145 points in the last three games - all losses after losing only 2 games all season each of the last three years.

Completely agree !!!!

Oct 10, 2022, 1:32 PM [ in reply to A little premature to draw this conclusion, but then again ]

BV didn't inherit a CFP caliber program. A lot of their players bailed and followed LR to Southern Cal, and the rebuilding effort is going to take some time. While that isn't going to make OU fans feel any better about this past weekends beatdown, it is the reality of the situation and the current status of their program.

This. BV lost a lot of talent that went with Riley to the real USC. It will take some time, but OU fans are an impatient, arrogant lot.

Why does reading (listening to) Cowherd’s babble remind me of some coach telling his team “Don’t eat the rat poison…”?

The job responsibilities of a coordinator and HC are night and day. There is no way to project how a coordinator will do as a HC regardless of how good they were in their previous role. Having said that I believe CBV will be a good HC in the long term, but not sure OU will be willing to wait. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Unfortunately this is what the transfer portal has done. College football as we knew it is now over because you don't know your team from one year to the next. You can be assured there will be more Oklahoma's on the horizon.

Brent Venables apparently ignored a tradition after

Oct 10, 2022, 1:55 PM

the Red River shindig as well. The losing team is supposed to be interviewed first so the winning team can celebrate. After 30 minutes of no show from OU coaches or players, Texas went ahead with their interviews. If it is a true tradition between the two teams that sounds uncharacteristic of Venables to buck it.

Re: Brent Venables apparently ignored a tradition after

Oct 10, 2022, 2:24 PM

By the time BV took over, Oklahoma was a shell of the team they were last year. They went from Heisman caliber/winning QBs over the last however many years to a 5’8” kid who transferred from UCF (who is now hurt). BV will get 3 years to turn this ship around. If he isn’t competitive by the time they leave for the SEC my guess is the boosters will be writing that buyout check. Some times people are better being #2’s than the top dog…we’ll see if that’s the case here but regardless Cowherd says things to draw ratings, not necessarily things that are correct.

If they do jump the gun and fire him where does he go. Alabama would be chomping at the bit for him. Does Dabo demote Wes, I highly doubt it. Would hate to play against him as DC.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem is that fans arent very rational

Oct 10, 2022, 2:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Brent Venables apparently ignored a tradition after ]

and the ship didn't need turning around until BV took it off course this year. The fans aren't going to care very much about what happened to the roster during the offseason. It's been 7 seasons since OU lost more than 2 games, and they haven't had a losing season since 1998 - the year before Stoops took over. A losing record is very much in play right now.

Given the expectations at Oklahoma, i think Brent will have a pretty short leash. He needs to start showing some signs of life there and at least look competitive in these last 6 games or he's going to start off next season on the hot seat already. I don't think it's anything close to a guarantee that he gets 3 years.

Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 2:41 PM

I always thought Ted Roof was not a great coach. He it’s getting over 1.1 a year to coach V’s defense. Brent should demote him and take over play calling on defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Real Problem is OKIE Fan False Expectations

Oct 10, 2022, 2:45 PM

This team has appeared 4 times, never winning and losing by an average of 16 points a game. They are a NYE 6 caliber team at their peak.

Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 3:10 PM

I don’t think Venables will be fired this season, but he will be next season, if they continue to get their azzes beat like they stole something. It’s one thing to lose close games to good teams, but to get embarrassed by schools like TCU, fans will be waving pitchforks and torches in Norman. BV should’ve fired his DC and OC after that Texas game.

Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 3:55 PM

I don't know how many players bailed when LR left but just the QB alone is a big deal. BV played that game with what should be the 3rd string QB. Not an easy way to win games for ANYONE.

I'm confident he will turn it around if given the opportunity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brent Venables doesn’t deserve this!!!!

Oct 10, 2022, 4:28 PM

I wish him luck!!!!

Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 4:45 PM

Riley leaves, taking a ton of key players with him, and the new guy gets reamed for losing games he probably wouldn't be losing if said players were still on the team. Every new coach has growing pains and BV may never figure it out and go back to coaching defense in a couple years but its bizarre that fans expect this team to play at the same level when it was gutted by the last guy. Having said that, Oklahoma probably shouldn't ever lose 49-0 to anybody so Brent needs to tighten some things up pronto.

Re: Colin Cowherd explains why he was wrong about Brent Venables

Oct 10, 2022, 4:53 PM

Sincere thanks for sharing. Now I don’t have to listen to it. This is a clown quote imo. He was wrong about Venables, now go hire Matt Rhule? Fear the portal? Knee jerk much Colin?

I don’t take much of what he says at anything beyond hype for listeners/clicks. He’s like a VC hot take machine that gets paid millions for being right 2.5 out of ten times. Joke.

I also saw him at Ralph’s in MB one time and he was an ### to the staff. Hope he’s wrong again about BV and whatever else his big brain farts out.
