Boulware let Cam Newton have it after crucial interception

Then he got the late hit penalty on 3rd down

Sep 5, 2016, 3:52 PM

After we stopped them then they got their TD.

Re: Then he got the late hit penalty on 3rd down

Sep 6, 2016, 1:27 PM

Yeah. Really stupid late hit, especially given the circumstances. It should have been fourth and 10 at the 20 instead of first and goal at the 10. He negated his interception with this and helped to make it really interesting at the end.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

coaches need to talk to Bouleware

Sep 5, 2016, 3:53 PM

Get him to reel it in. I mean was this just random? Had Cam been talking to him?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware

Sep 5, 2016, 3:57 PM

Ben should have batted the ball down. No point it intercepting on the two when on turnover of downs we automatically get it on the 7 or 8. 4th down play.

Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware

Sep 5, 2016, 4:12 PM

You probably never played sports.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both of you are right...

Sep 6, 2016, 7:04 AM

It would have been smarter to bat it down unless there was room for a return, but as a player, the stats are hard to pass up.

Pretty sure that's why Cam is smiling though, "Go ahead and point at me fool... you just pinned your O on the 2!"

Sep 6, 2016, 9:41 AM [ in reply to Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware ]

You are the one here who probably never played sports. I was taught knowing situations and discipline when i played. Him intercepting that was a very selfish play.

Exactly . . .

Sep 6, 2016, 12:31 PM

The ole "you probably haven't played" cop-out is the first refuge of those who can't effectively defend their points on the merits in these kinds of discussions.

One can accept any number of mitigating explanations . . . i.e. it was a bang-bang reaction combined with force of habit. The general goal is obviously to get a turnover, you see a ball flying your way and as a defender, 99% of the time you have ever reason to try to catch it, etc. - and so the reaction is hard to suppress. Or, the idea that batting it could cause a tipped ball and someone offensive player would catch it (although you can avoid this by letting it drop after "blocking" it as opposed to swatting it aggressively). These are fair qualifications. But your point still stands, ideally the players will be coached to be aware of the situation so as to adjust when necessary if the unlikely occurs in such a situation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mean ole selfish Ben intercepting that Auburn player's pass.

Agree, but it is easy to say that sitting on the couch watching the game, I would guess his football instincts took over. He didn't have time to think about it like us fans did.

EXACTLY RIGHT. You tell yourself before play to knock down

Sep 5, 2016, 4:36 PM [ in reply to Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware ]

And the pansies who do not know you knock it down are the ones who did not play football. I played LB for eight yrs including high school all-conf for one year. I do not proclain to hold a candle to Boulware from a talent perspective and I'm a fan of his, but he made the wrong play. BV will not so gently remind Boulware this week to knock that pass down. The INT resulted in easy AUBURN TD after Boulware hit AUB QB out of bounds, then Boulware was out-of-position on next play when RB ran by him untouched.

Watson and O would have had some room on 7 to operate but none on 1 yard line. Punt back to AUB was self-fulfilling forecast with ball on one.

college vs nfl

Sep 5, 2016, 8:15 PM [ in reply to EXACTLY RIGHT. You tell yourself before play to knock down ]

I do not blame Mr. Boulware for making the int. He has never lacked for intensity or excitement. He has made that play on several occasions. The defense had been holding and they maybe should have held again. The point is that he is now the epitome of college vs nfl. If he doesn't start thinking, he won't be in nfl

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah and most interception returns...

Sep 5, 2016, 5:24 PM [ in reply to Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware ]

don't go for a minimum of five yards? I definitely see your and all conference soccer man's point, but if Boulware doesn't lose his balance and fall down, he probably returns that at least to the 10, 15 or even 20. Right? Then what's better...having it at the 7 or the 20?! How many passes picked off at the goal line don't make it back at least to the 7 yd line? You guys who claim to have played the game sometimes crack me up with the 20:20 hindsight micro-analytical BS. Those who really played this game know it is often times a hyper emotional game of inches played in split seconds of time. Kids will make 5 yard mistakes in judgement from time to time. And they may point at their super heros when they make a big play. Some folks need to pump the brakes on all the second guessing of players and coaches. Not meant as an attack on anyone. Just my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah and most interception returns...

Sep 5, 2016, 5:36 PM

Yep, Ben's job is to make tackles and get interceptions if possible, It's the O's job to move it toward our goal line. If the O don't advance the ball, don't blame Ben for that bc he intercepted the ball and got a turn over against Aubarn!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure I totally agree with that.

Sep 5, 2016, 5:42 PM

He is expected to make wise decisions. My point was Auburn was already darn close to the goal line at the seven. I doubt he was thinking he'd fall down at the two after making the interception. My point was it is a split decision and he was likely thinking he could return it out beyond the seven.

Pointing at Cam was the wrong thing. Ben right away acknowledged it was stupidity and made sure Cam knew he meant no disrespect. He owned it. I can live with that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah and most interception returns...

Sep 5, 2016, 5:53 PM [ in reply to Yeah and most interception returns... ]

Agreed, fans are often overly critical of players actions on this field, and people don't realize the intensity, and that there's quite an adrenaline rush in alot of situations...I wouldn't overly harp and pick apart guys for what they do on the field..
Bottom line it was a great play but the not so smart gesturing towards the opposite sideline could've been flagged as a penalty...point it out so you don't make the same mistake again and move on

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ball was picked off

Sep 5, 2016, 7:12 PM [ in reply to Yeah and most interception returns... ]

at the goal line . Down it in the end zone and possession at the twenty. As a player you know that before the ball is thrown. Just like an infielder. You don't decide which base to throw it to after you caught the ground ball

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Go back and watch the video

Sep 5, 2016, 7:50 PM

Yes his feet were BARELY in the end zone but he had to lunge forward to make the pick and his momentum carried him out of the end zone. Go watch the video Forrest. It's on Tigernet. Also watch right before Shaun White throws it Ben is baiting the throw. There was also NOTHING but green grass in front of him if he could've kept his footing instead of lunging for the ball. Watch the video and you'll see.

He coverage skills are not what the NFL wants and he's building his resume.

Gotta love Ben but sometimes, he's a bit of a wildcard. I would take a team full of him though.

They showed him getting "the talk" as soon as he got to the sideline about he should have knocked it down.

He got chewed, and as leader of the defense you can bet the players let him know he screwed up too.

Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware

Sep 5, 2016, 5:33 PM

The interception was a great play...Ben got into great position and made a great play on the ball...You go trying to do something not natural/instinctual in that position and next thing you know you might accidentally bat it in a way that it ricochets giving an Auburn player a shot at it...he did the wisest and safest thing by making the play on the ball and securing it...You wanna bat jump balls down when you don't have a clear opportunity to secure it, because it lessens the odds that a receiver can make a clean play on the ball...Boulware should be celebrating with his teammates when he makes big plays because they are a huge part of why he is able to make them...imo he shouldn't be messing with some guy on the opposing sideline or glorifying himself, he should be glorifying his teamates by running straight to them and celebrating the play they made

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: coaches need to talk to Bouleware

Sep 5, 2016, 5:42 PM

Ben needs to celebrate with his teamates...the team is what is important, make it about the team and celebrate the journey with them..
Run to them not some dude on the opposing sideline who had nothing to do with helping u make the play...

Sep 5, 2016, 5:46 PM [ in reply to coaches need to talk to Bouleware ]

you have a video of a football player taunting other players in your profile

Posters have made thousands of post about Boulware and "what he can do" making him a hero. Now that he actually does something like that, he needs to be reeled in. Can't have it both ways

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hilarious.....

Sep 6, 2016, 11:23 AM

I agree. I have read most of these posts. I played a little bit of ball but I am certainly no expert. Yes, in baseball you know where you will throw the ball before the pitch is made. However in football there are so many options, so many things that could occur, that there is no way to identify what you would do in each of those occurrences, especially in 15 seconds before the snap. So what happens is your coaching takes over. That's what Dabo has stated that he wants his guys to react like muscle memory, because of the large amount of practicing. That's exactly why you practice so much, so that when your instincts take over, you will know what to do without thinking about it. In this case his instincts were to intercept the ball. Not to stop and think about batting it down. 90% of the time, intercepting the ball would be the correct action, not batting it down. So everyone needs to understand Ben was just doing what he had been coached to do. He made a great play, unfortunately the grass monster made a tackle.

uh no.

That is allowing emotions and other base instincts to compromise your decision making faculties.

Don't empower poor behavior by calling it exuberance.

That is embarrassing and not what I want from my Tigers.

Not a wise move by Ben. Could've been flagged and we have to start at the 1 instead of the 2. LOL.

It looks like Cam is loving the gamesmanship of it all. But look at the faces of Cam's entourage. They are NOT amused by Ben's antics.

Re: FB Update: Boulware let Cam Newton have it after crucial interception

Sep 5, 2016, 6:05 PM

It is amazing that he even new he was there. Maybe Cam was in the same spot all game. His play was bang bang and he was up and running like he did against ND. He fell in that game! He gets excited!!! I get that. If you look at the motion picture, it was a split second point, not for very long. I see nothing wrong with that. It was a big play, HUGE PLAY. If they would have scored at that time, it may have been a totally different outcome. The Auburn crowd began to leave. Game over right? As Lee C says, not so fast my friend. Without the intercept at that time of the. Game, we might be 0-1. Thanks Ben and go Tigers!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK...get this....

Sep 5, 2016, 7:39 PM

You don't bat the ball down if you have a chance to return it, possibly for a big gain. He made the right move, end of discussion. The play on Cam was "spot on" as well....you bunch of candy azzes. I hate when you people complain about every little thing...it was all in fun in the heat of the moment...wasn't like he stood there and did a big dance or something....he pointed his finger for goodness sake....geeez, lighten up Felicia!!!!

down instead of INT at the 2? We would have gotten ball at the 8 instead of the 2. No one pointed that out, but I was thinking this immediately.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Did anyone else think he should have batted the ball..

Sep 6, 2016, 11:46 AM

I thought this at first, but he caught the ball high, almost above his head, while falling down. Considering his positioning to the ball I'm glad he caught it rather than popping it up in the air, which could have happened considering how he caught it.
