Clever letting the ball roll before picking it up to start the possession clock

As the team that is nursing the big lead. Never seen that before by the team that is up big.
The game clock was running and Clemson, sporting the big lead, let it roll before picking it up to start their possession clock. This shortened the game for SMU by making it a longer possession on the game clock. They didn’t do it when game clock was not running.
Conversely we’ve all seen the team that is behind when the game clock is not running let the ball roll to shorten their possession by not picking it up till they have to.

I’m sure y’all gave seen what I’m talking about before but I haven’t and I’ve been watching basketball since before the shot clock was invented.

My son and I were talking about that. Doesn’t start the possession clock or the 10 second backcourt count. It was smart.

Thought the same thing. Make them come out and pick you up.

But, doesn’t the 5 second inbounds clock still run? How does that work?

They sure don’t call that anymore as long as the ball leaves the passers hand before the 5 count

The player inbounding the ball just has to get it out of his hands within 5 seconds.

And now, I know THE REST OF THE STORY!!

I can’t lie. Our guys have done this in a few previous games, and it was my thinking that since they were leading, why do they NOT want the clock to run? But then, I saw that the game clock was indeed running, so I was totally perplexed!

Thanks all for the education!
