Clemson: Storming the Field

Oct 17, 2022, 9:19 AM

With all the hoopla surrounding Tennessee storming the field after their big win, I thought I would ask a question here.

Let’s pretend for a minute that the Gathering at the Paw tradition didn’t exist. Which games in Clemson history would’ve justified a field storming in death valley?

The first few that come to my mind are:
2013 Georgia
2015 Notre Dame
2016 Louisville

What are some other games in Death Valley that would qualify?

I thought the Valley was going to explode when we hit triple zeroes against the coots in 14. Was amazing

You didn’t play Southern Cal in 2014. The real USC has actually won national titles and put guys in the HOF.

Well, the ACC fines people too, but since we have the tradition of gathering at the paw, there is a $4 upcharge on every ticket we sell. We silently pay that fine every week.

My quick list below:

Oct 17, 2022, 9:56 AM

1981 Georgia (Beating defending National Champs)
1987 Georgia (Treadwell breaks their hearts for the 2nd year in a row)
2000 South Carolina (The Catch II)
2003 Virginia (Comeback, OT win)
2009 FSU (The "We Will Rock You" electric night game in the Valley)
2011 Auburn (Broke the nations longest winning streak)
2013 Georgia (Top 8 matchup)
2015 Notre Dame (Monsoon, BYOG, 'nuff said.)
2015 FSU (Tough, hard nosed play from Wayne Gallman all night)
2016 Louisville (Top 5 matchup, "Did not get there, DID NOT GET THERE! Lemuer Jackson Show.)
2018 Syracuse (The Chase Brice Game)
2019 Texas A&M (Top 12 matchup)
2020 Miami (Top 7 matchup)
2021 FSU (Still hard to believe we won that game)

Great list 76, I would add 1980 coot game. We were a .500 team, they were ranked and their fans were very cocky. We smoked them with 2 picks by Willie Underwood. Their fans were stunned and we were estatic.

That is way too many. If you don't have a tradition like we do, then you should only storm the field for wins where you really outperformed expectations. Not every ranked win or game where someone played well deserves a storming. That's crazy. I think some of your early ones are good, but the only win since 2010 I think deserved it was Auburn.

And you left out 2003 FSU, maybe the most important game in Clemson history (outside of the titles). Dabo wouldn't even be here if it weren't for that game.

When I was an undergrad, we didn't storm the field every game, just for big wins. To each their own.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you sure you were an undergrad?

Oct 17, 2022, 10:13 AM

Because fans have been coming onto the field after every game forever. Storming / rushing / coming onto the field. Call it what you will.

1983 Maryland, for the unofficial ACC Championship and . . . . . wait, we did storm the field and took down a goalpost too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was there!!!

Oct 17, 2022, 10:54 AM

I still remember part of the goalpost being paraded through Johnstone.

Oct 17, 2022, 10:38 AM

the most part at Clemson. While some fans do run, after a really big win, most of the time it is a more orderly, slower accumulation of fans gathering at the Paw. "Storming" conjures up situations where people could potentially get hurt. I don't see that out of our fans, thank goodness.

Be very careful Seem a way the ACC could outlaw it and have $50,000 coming in from Clemson cause I don’t see us abiding to them

All I know is that a few years ago I got to the paw and will always treasure that memory. I had a leg amputated this year and won't make it to a game this year and may not ever make it to another one. But I'll at least always have the feeling of the Clemson turf under my feet.

Re: Clemson: Storming the Field

In my opinion storming the field is ridiculous for you to even suggest it. Besides the fact it presents an unsecure situation, it is costly for the school. Tennessee was fined $100,00.00 for that escapade. Then count in the cost for the goal posts- $30,000. Who do think pays for that, maybe a rise in tuitions or such? I would suggest something else.

Re: Clemson: Storming the Field

Storming the field and tearing down goalposts are for those schools that never do anything. A real program like Clemson, with national titles, should never storm a field.
