Clemson in talks with the BIG10 as well
Jul 3, 2022, 3:12 PM

SEC seems like a natural fit but the BIG10 is turning itself into a national brand, the yearly payout would be close to 100mil. Who knows what's being talked about, #### maybe the new conference, if it happens, handle the buyout or half of it. The ACC without Clemson is nothing in football. They would be no better than the current PAC12 or BIG12.

Thanks batty_tiger® ... had not seen. IMHO it starts (if it starts) with B1G invite then SEC invite. The important thing is for Clemson to have options, and the BOT and President can make the right long term decision hopefully.

Clemson does not want to leave the ACC. We need the ACC to expand into Texas. Would like to see the ACC flip Cinci to the ACC and then get Texas Tech, Ok State, and either West Virginia or Colorado. That opens some TV markets and would allow to get a new TV deal.

i think the alumni would prefer to stay in the ACC provided we get more teams to join and get a new TV deal to compete with the SEC and Big 10

ACC will never be able to compete with payouts of B1G and SEC. They were playing chess while Swoffie played checkers. The leftover crumbs will not close the gap. It was ok while it lasted but bye bye to ACC

Disagree. I would just as soon stay in the ACC but given the current circumstances that may no longer be an option. Thus I have no desire to leave the ACC but understand the situation

SEC and BIG will have their own playoff. There is no way Clemson should be left out. We need to move to the SEC to even stay relevant. Sad, but true.

Maybe many of us are too young to remember...
How did those SEC schools get so many "claimed" (but not earned) national championships? By not integrating their schools and teams, they played separate schedules from the other conferences. I'm not judging because "we" did the same thing.
For years the Rose Bowl was the de facto national championship. It retained its aura long after the conferences who participated in it lost their relevance.
If the B1G and SEC set up their own playoff and championship system based on money, there is NO power that will force them to include outsiders.

Get over ACC expansion. The ACC is on life support with no chance of recovery.
I have to believe that Notre Dame will go to the big 10 and leave the acc. When that happens the acc has no choice but to expand or die on the vine. If several OTHER schools leave, the acc will have to fold or JOIN other schools to form another large conference of their own. The prospects for the acc to remain stable , relevant , and able to compete withe the sec and big 10 do not good at all right now.

I don't get the love for the ACC
Jul 4, 2022, 2:05 AM
[ in reply to Re: Clemson in talks with the BIG10 as well ] |

The only thing the ACC has ever done for Clemson was provide a gravy train schedule to help us get to the Natty. Is that really something to celebrate? The ACC has given Clemson no respect. I hate the SEC, but at least they have interesting programs. And the ACC is controlled by tobacco road, and will and has stabbed Clemson in the back every chance they get. In the 80s Clemson was put on two year probation by the NCAA. The ACC added an extra year. No bowl games or TV for three years. The ACC has done nothing for Clemson. And it's getting so boring playing those same garbage teams every year. Only exception is FSU and Miami. And they will likely bolt. And I'm tired of trying to "Save The ACC" . There is no saving it. Bring in Cincinnati? That's so laughable. West Virginia would be ok but they are no where near good enough to save the league. And I heard they only would join if ND will....and ND is not joining. So while we may be stuck in this boring CONFERENCE for now.... please understand I'm not happy about it.
Ok

Nothing about that new ACC lineup would get anywhere close to the media deals the Big10 and SEC command. Those are all secondary brands/smaller markets that can’t move the needle.

Clemson SHOULD move to the B1G
Jul 3, 2022, 5:27 PM
|
|
B1G will have a national footprint that helps our recruiting in a big way. It's also much more than a bunch of football schools tied together (mainly) in one region of the country.
If the B1G gets Notre Dame (even if this forces them to accept Stanford too), it will outshine the SEC in every possible way except for football. This should be the first option for Clemson.
For me, this is not even debatable.

Well the upside for me is that a lot of the B1G schools are a heck of a lot closer than most of the ACC are. Northwestern is maybe 30 minutes, Purdue is 2 1/2 hours, Illinois is 3, Wisconsin 1 Hr 45. Others aren’t so far away. Would be able to see more Tiger football in person. Only downside is having to put up with a lot of the arrogant B1G fans.

As an alum, would much rather us leave for Sec or Big Ten than stay in ACC. Acc just doesn’t have it in football, which is where the money is at. Adding Texas Tech or West Virginia isn’t going to change the game.

One thing everyone here needs to clearly understand:
The other B1G fan bases are not like Ohio State's. Please get that in your heads. When it comes to football fandom, Ohio State is really an SEC school. Their arrogance and sense of entitlement is despised by everyone else. I won't even bother going into detail; it's just a fact.
If Clemson goes to the B1G, the fan bases are the #1 thing you will appreciate about the conference. We all make fun of each other and there is a lot of passion, but most everyone has their heads screwed properly (except the jerks at Ohio State).
Ohio State football fans are NOT representative of the rest of the conference.

I think you've hit on some valid points. Over the years

I have conducted a good bit of business in the Midwest, have travelled the area, and have close relatives there (including my son and family who lived there a number of years,) and I have found those folks quite likable.
I believe the Clemson fanbase would enjoy the people and venues. Geographically, I believe the travel would be easier in the South, but if push comes to shove, I wouldn't have any opposition were we in the B1G. I've already posted that I think the B1G and SEC will go to at least 20 teams, maybe, 24. If so, then Clemson will have to make a move despite the GOR.

Hold on there Boilermaker. You are right about other B1G fan bases not being like ours. Mostly because none support football like we do. Let's not forget, only three schools wanted to play football through covid. Purdue wasn't one of them. Football means more to Ohio St than any other university in the B1G. As far as despised from everyone else, your simply making that up. Ohio State is respected by every university in the B1G. You know why that is? We've towed the B1G line, we've never tried to flex our muscles and buck the conference. We have and will continue to support equal revenue payouts for every school in the B1G. You think people care or want to watch Purdue? We could have played the Texas card at pretty much anytime in our history and made demands, but we never have. Because unlike Texas we have respected our conference mates. Are we proud of our past accomplishments? You bet we are! You think that is wrong? We don't care. Get better! As far as Clemson goes. I would love to have them in the conference. We already have a rivalry with them. I would love to see the B1G take a shot at the SEC and go after Florida St, and Miami also.

No matter how you slice, dice and combine the teams that are not in the B1G or SEC, they will not comprise a conference that is competitive with the B1G and SEC. There is no way ESPN or FOX would pay as much for that fictional conference as they pay for the B1G or SEC. Unless ND joins the ACC and FSU, Miami and VT suddenly play as well as they did a decade or two ago, it is a total non starter.
So would the SEC or B1G invite Clemson? From the SEC's perspective, we would bring some national eyes, but not as many extra regional eyes. However, the B1G would get both national eyes and an extended footprint. It their goal is a bigger footprint, it seems the B1G could grab a VA school, an NC school and us. That would be my hope.

In the end its just going to be 2 big conferences like the NFL with several divisions in each, each side has a playoff and the 2 winners face off in the National Title game.
