Chris Rumph for DC

I think this is a guy that the players want to play for.
I always am in favor of letting the defensive line coaches stay as that position coach to put more focus on it.
But I think he could be a viable option.

There is no way you can promote anyone form this staff . The Dline was pitiful against the run and outside of Parker did not produce a pass rush either . There is just no justification for firing the D Coordinator and hiring a staffer from the failed staff

Yeah but how much of that is his doing and how much of it is injury/lack of talent?
The DL spot is in a bad spot if you have Denhoff starting and playing meaningful snaps. Not too mention having arguably your 2nd best defensive player (PWoods) hurt for majority of the year.
Rumph has been an established, successful coach. It’s not like he just magically forgot how to do it at an elite level.

Brent Venables is obviously one of the best DCs in the sport when he is in that position
And I personally think he’s better when he can just can tell a defense, and not be a head coach.
But, my point is players were passionate to play for him. They trusted him and would go all out in everything they did.
Because Brent demanded it.
I don’t see players give the same effort now.
Such as Khalil Barnes completely giving up on a TD by Texas last week.
The biggest thing is having a guy who they will trust and go the extra mile for.
Some guys just have a natural way of bringing players to think like that. And I don’t know if Wes is a guy like that. Plus, they may not have trust in his coaching now.

I think in situations like this, the defensive players are probably a lot more responsive to the coaching styles of the position coaches than they are a soft spoken DC.
Yes they take their marching orders and assignments from the DC but they’re responding more to the position coach.

I think you have to get outside the family and bring in a proven DC with his own ideas and creativity. I also think these guys need to see a new sheriff in town and realize nothing is a given, it has to be earned.
Hire for the DC role like you did with the OL coach role.

He’s already putting the shackles on Riley and his ego is probably not going to let any outsider get in the way of “the Clemson Defense.”

Dabo has already proven he’s not afraid to go out and get someone who knows more than he does.
We all saw Saturday vs Texas what the offense is capable of if Riley is given free agency to call plays accordingly. My assumption is we’ll see more of that next season. Especially with the prospect of Cade being the top QB in the country.
In terms of “Clemson defense” Dabo is going to bring someone in and let them get it back on track. It was very evident throughout the year how upset he was with the defense and he isn’t going to want to live thru it again for another season.

Judge you’re usually a good troll but this one is just bad.
They played the #1 ranked defense and were more successful than any other team in the country.
All while leaving points on the board as well.
I understand the disdain you have for Clemsons football coaches but sometimes it clouds your ability to troll successfully.

Sorry Bud, but you don’t have the first clue about where or even if Dabo meddles in the OC’s or DC’s job, except for personnel decisions.
“ … putting the shackles on Riley …”
Good heavens.

It’s a fair assumption to make
Given Dabo initially stated that GR would come in and work the “Clemson offense”
And just recently Riley made the comment where he was upset the offense wasn’t “pressing the gas pedal” for full length of games.
As well as the fact that we’ve seen Dabo take over in the middle of some games and call plays.
There’s definitely been some adjustments made between them

That’s what I don’t understand. Why everyone just assumes dabo is meddling with playcalling lol.
Don’t misunderstand me I’m sure there are times where Dabo makes the call about what he wants to do but why would he bring in a million dollar coach and then give him absolutely no freedom to do what he won an assistant if the year award to do? Lol.

“The way the games have gone, we probably didn’t stay on the gas as much as I would have liked to,” Riley said. “Hindsight is 20/20 coming off the game.”
This is Garret’s quote. “As much as I would have liked to”.
The way he said it points to the notion that the offensive timing wasn’t to his liking.
There you go.
If he was liable he would’ve owned up to being too conservative in those games.

That quote can mean any number of things lol.
Like for instance, you interpret it that way.
I interpreted it as “The staff decided to go conservative to try and limit mistakes as to not put our defense in a bad spot, playing with a lead.”
Being told to go conservative and “Dabo is calling the plays” are two wildly different principles.

How does that make sense?
Why have an OC if you’re letting “the staff” make serious game decisions like that? If you give me a clear cut example of any other team ever where the subordinates to even the OC, nonetheless the HC, please provide it.
All I’m saying that you cant rule out the possibility of it happening. I could definitely see Dabo doing that.
The Louisville game was the most puzzling to me. Being conservative when you’re down by any amount of points is crazy, but down 26-7? I was losing my mind.
