The practical way to address the illegal alien problem is to deport those who came to America over the previous 5 years.
These recently-arrived illegal immigrants are not yet socially assimilated (or in many cases hardly aware of) the social behaviors of Americans.
Ironically enough, American businesses that have long-term illegal alien employees have been engineering a way to jettison those long-term illegals (e.g., those who are now making wages that are comparable to American-born natives) and then hire recently-arrived illegals (e.g., paid wages that are, in effect, below that which the long-term illegals make) to take their place. This is done by closing a plant (for example, meat packing / chicken processing) in one location and open8ng a new plant in a different location.
Those from among the came-here-longer-ago illegal aliens, I.e., those who are working, at least now aware of America’s societal norms. Those who work, and the direct family members of those who are working, at least have some track record of behaving in a way that is compatible with American-born ‘natives.’
Those illegal aliens who have no track record of working (with the exception of direct family members of those who do work) still need to be deported. Those illegals will be harder to find because they have found out a way to sustain themselves via crime or cheating to get American societal safety net benefits. In other words, that group is very much off our grid.

5 years? No...The way to do it is to let them all stay, aside from the criminals. Then just have a tighter border. Also, make all of the Dreamers citizens.
