It would be interesting to know how these grades compare with those of the CU coaches. Not that we ever will

Jake Venables was spectacular? Love his effort and intensity but he wasn't near spectacular.

I felt the same. He had good plays but seemed like more of a liability

Venables got a lot of hate from Clemson fans who saw him miss a few key tackles in the first Notre Dame game after playing 75 snaps, but if you actually look at his numbers his tackle rate and stop rate not only favorably compare to his teammates but to LBs across the conference and country.
When he is close to plays, he makes them more than most at his position (tackle rate).
Also when he makes plays they are usually at a place on the field that prevents the opposing team from reaching the goal yardage for the play (stop rate dumbed down).
I am not advocating for him to be a starter, but many fans think less of him than he deserves.

Can't compare Jake's garbage-time grade to starter grades
Jan 11, 2021, 3:09 PM

Jake was too slow. When Skalski was injured, Jake whiffed on way too many tackles, and it contributed to Clemson's loss to Notre Dame. I'm sure Jake's grades as the starter (especially against Notre Dame) were lower than his average, which included mostly garbage-time against fatigued, inferior competition. Same grade-inflation naturally occurs for all the backups.

Kinda hit-or-miss there starts v. backup. Two of his top-3 PFF grades were as a starter (BC, 75.2; ND, 72.3) and two of his worst-3 grades were as a starter (min. 10 snaps, taking out the VT game he was hurt after 8 plays: 55.6, Wake; Syracuse 64.5). Best game against The Citadel (81.6) and worst game against UVa. coming off the bench (min. 10 snaps: 62.1).

Would have liked to have seen more playing time from Keith Maguire. This kid is for real and just needs to be on the field to be seen. Was all-stater in high school from Pennsylvania - and truly a Brian Dawkins prototype - had a knack of always being around the ball in making things happen in all sorts of ways - not everyone has that gift!

Yeah he sure was. Imho, he wasn't rated as high as he should have been. He and vonta need more time or I'm afraid we'll lose a couple because of a crowded room. I'd hate to see that happen. As I said posted below, sometimes players do better in live action and get in a rhythm vs in practice. That goes both ways.4

Jake was NOT "solid". He was barely "serviceable".

He has good knowledge but he doesn't have the physical tools to be on the 2-deep for a team with national championship aspirations. He's a half-step too slow (whiffs too often, liability in coverage, etc.) and doesn't seem capable of bringing the lumber or taking-on OLs. We all know why he was offered a scholarship.

It is going to be a packed room. Then again, you look at Bama and to a lesser extent osu, their room stays packed too. Not going to point any specific players out, but imo we have guys starting that'd be on bamas scout team.
Recruit rankings can be very deceiving sometimes. You can get a few really high profile stars and your class rating can rocket. Especially in today's world where kids can jump from camp to camp and obtain offers from big schools that shoot their ratings up.
And sometimes players practice well but doesn't translate to the playing field. I'd love to see us play guys like Simpson on the field that may miss a play but at the end of the year they're seasoned. Who cares if we beat wake 45-28. Sometimes the best learning comes from playing when the games still close vs when the games out of hand in second half.

I think that we are in a Catch22 at linebacker. Our best players are a lot closer to their potential ceilings than the players behind them. With meaningful, non garbage time snaps, Maguire, Bentley, Patterson, and Simpson will likely be challenging for the starting spots. Next year, you can throw Carter and Trotter into that mix, as well.
However, Spector, Skalski, and Venables are better options now. I don't think that any of the three have the potential for huge improvements from where they are now. I think that Jones, Jr falls somewhere in between, in that he still has some untapped potential, but I still think that Simpson has a higher ceiling.
What do you do? I am glad that I don't have to make that decision. If you play the younger guys more and they don't make the improvement then you give up quality of play, and limit the improvement, even if it is lesser, that the veterans could make. If you don't play the younger guys more, they may never reach their potential. There is no doubt that the pieces are there. I just hope Venables does a good job with the puzzle.

The only reason Jake Venables gets playing time his because his daddy is the DC. Bentley was far better than when he played.
