Can we fix the Offense?

2

Sep 3, 2024, 3:43 PM

I think so - but Idk if it will be enough.

Georgia inflicted their will on us - especially in the second half. They made really good halftime adjustments and targeted the weaknesses in our zone.

This really put the offense in a hole so we changed the gameplan and went pass heavy. We made some terrible run calls, had drops, and bad luck (that int - if Brown doesn't fall I think that pass gets broken up).

Plays ran against UGA: 52~
Plays ran against KY: 80~

So, I got to thinking... what's the problem?

Well, I went back and looked at the Box for Riley's TCU offense against UGA

Plays TCU ran against UGA: 51~.

---

I think this is an indictment on us. But I think we're also looking at a potential Smart dynasty that could surpass Saban.

---

What is our strength? Mafah.

If I'm Riley I'm focusing on designed runs with Mafah (letting him pick up 3/4 every time), putting our fastest and most dynamic receivers inside and running more crossing routes off of play action.

I think this offense is going to be good - but I don't think it will be great. That being said, I think we can be good and have really solid year.

I think it will get OK but not good. We are just to vanilla. Other teams know our plays ahead of us because we run so few and have absolutely no imagination. I think we should go to a fast paced offense.

Given FSU’s meltdown, I see us beating a weakened NC State and an already-disappointing VA Tech as our toughest remaining opponents. App State scares more than the rest of our ACC schedule. S.Carolina looks to be on track for a very very bad season.

Our most challenging game will be Miami in the ACC Championship.

Yes, the ACC is that bad.

We will have a bunch of wins this year if our OL starters stay healthy this year, if Mafah stays healthy, if A.Williams and T.Brown remain healthy, and if we don’t count on Briningstool blocking well. Also counting on our vanilla offense keeping CK2 out of situations where he feels the need to try to do too much. We can’t win the games against our semi-tough opponents if 2024 becomes a sequel to 2023 season’s disastrous 2023 season.

Our defense is good enough to win games even with a vanilla offense … during the regular season.

I would add: We look to make steps forward
with our offense if the two freshmen WR’s gain
more and more playing time. I know that some recruiting player evaluations have been off recently, but I don’t think that is the case for Moore and Wesco.

It's all about Cade . . no one else.

If he is average or worse, so will our O.

The plays/playcalling are vanilla. Need to cook up something different...throw in some window dressing (jet sweep/pop pass motions, pre-snap movements)...something to jazz it up & give the opposing defenses other things to consider.

Didn't we say this same thing last year and the year before after the first game of the season?

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

It can be fixed but don’t know if Dabo has the stomach to do it.

With the new clock rules, most teams are only running 50-60 plays per game now. Did Cade play poorly? He did. But a lot of the mistakes are correctable. We need to see more down the field throws! And not sideline. Middle of the field! And we don't need to abandon the run game, which we did at times vs GA. I think we'll look back later in the season & say GA was just #### good! Keep in mind the last 2 yrs they've blown out Oregon, Ole Miss, Tenn & Mizzou. All top 10 caliber
