You're implying we should become an independent, I assume? I'm not sure that's a recipe for success for Clemson, and would most certainly shut us out of the CFP.

Is there a rule against being in a different conference for football vs all other sports?

1. It would be unprecedented. Therefore, a long tedious legal process. 2. Clemson does not have the financial resources or backing to be independent. 3. The conferences would argue over media and distribution rights. Clemson would be a pariah to both conferences.

Is there a statute or rule against being in different conferences for different sports? Maybe there is, but I don't have a copy of the GOR to see how/if it addresses that scenario.

If Clemson became independent in FOOTBALL. it would be beneficial. It would free them from the ACC. They wouldn't be bound to any conference, similar to Notre Dame. They have reached the level of national prominence, so the Tigers don't really need the ACC any longer. ND doesn't want to be shackled by a conference, and this is why they won't give in. Florida State was independent, and made the mistake of joining the ACC in the first place, and now they want out. Any independent football or basketball program with a national reputation should stay independent.

Broadcast rights to Clemson (and FSU) football is probably worth $100M/yr. The trick would be finding attractive opponents where the P2 schools are playing 8 or 9 games vs conference opponents. Any school worth it's salt is going to want 7 home games (with a 9 game conference sched, that means every other year, there will be 5 conf away games and only 4 conf home games...in that scenario, the school has to find 3 home opponents, likely of the cupcake persuasion). Long story short, as an independent program, it would be a tough task to find enough quality opponents to command that $100M payout.

ND is independent in football and therefore, football is not under a GOR. ND would have to pay an exit fee to the ACC in football if they wanted to join another conference but that is it.

No. We need to leave this God-forsaken conference, and when the door cracks open, we need to run for the exit without looking back. Good riddance!

And to be clear, we will never be an independent, nor should we be. We will have a landing spot. I’m confident that those details are being worked out behind the scenes, but we may have to give it 5 years +/- 2 years. If I’m off, take the over.

That’s a great question. Unfortunately I don’t think that would ever work out. The problem with these mega conferences is that you will have college athletes traveling coast to coast to play games. That’s not so bad when you only have five or six away games in college football but for all the other sports that’s going to be insane. Look at how many games basketball, baseball and softball play each year. Having to travel across the country for those games is going to be extremely expensive and a tremendous burden to the student athlete.
