For all of you "Portal fans"......this is the price and/or risk you take gaming the portal. Obviously, the incoming DE "portal guy" from Indiana triggered AJ Hoffler leaving via the portal.
Net gain in terms of depth at DE is ZERO.......AJ was just a Soph and was 'hopefully' developing as a DE and he did play sparingly this year. If I remember correctly, he was a 4-Star recruit and we really wanted him. I hate what the college game has become but that is just life.

Sorry but this is not a bad loss. We can do better in the portal. He’s only slightly better than Denhoff Who is atrocious.

It's not a zero net gain.
Heldt had 56 tackles, 5 sacks and a fumble recovery as a true sophomore.
Hoffler had 12 tackles and 0 sacks as a true sophomore.
I'll take Heldt type guys triggering Hoffler type guys to leave every single time.

You know that with Dabo going into the portal and bringing out Will Heldt, he definitely felt that we had a serious need for an upgrade at DE, bc there wouldn't have been any serious portal action if not!!!

You hate to lose anyone but the guys been here two years and hardly seen the field, even though we had some atrocious Dline play at times the second half of the season. There's always a chance the light would come on for him later but my guess is the coaches were probably OK with moving on from him. These days if a coaching staff wants to get rid of a guy all they have to do is pull or reduce his $$$ and he's gonna be gone. Not saying that happened here but I bet that money could be better spent elsewhere.
