If he poaches Bates but that’s the word going around, makes zero sense to accept assistant head coach then leave. Anyone think we lose transfers out of this??

So what. Happens all the time, bares may have more input there or whatever the case maybe. They are not the only coaches in the world. People were going ape$hit when OC left, then we one two Natty's.

Why accept the assistant HC position only to leave after the bowl game that’s what I don’t understand. If he was going to be their DC it would make complete sense but they’ve already announced their DC

I believe BV had Dabos permission after Bates contacted BV about this. He was pissed in my opinion thinking he should have gotten the DC job.

This isn't BV turning into the villain, this is Dabo's nepotism coming back to bite Clemson. When BV left, I saw some "insiders" saying they really hoped Conn would not be promoted to DC because it would be bad for recruiting and for the staff...this, among other things, is what they were likely alluding to.
Bates is going to be co-DC at Oklahoma, a promotion he would have likely been happy to have taken at Clemson. Unfortunately Mike Reed could be the next to leave...why would ambitious, talented coaches want to stay in the same place when the head coaches buddies get promoted over them?

What a bizarre take...not only is it a 1-game sample size, but the position coach you're talking about was on the staff still. This isn't about the position coach's feelings, this is about hiring the best man for the job. Like it or not, Dabo's hiring practices have become very nepotistic as of late, which makes a lot of people even more concerned about hiring Conn over Reed and Bates.
Furthermore, Venables isn't hiring Bates because he's concerned about Bates' "feelings". He thinks he's good enough to help get Oklahoma into the right position on defense as they prepare to enter the SEC.
