Maybe I'm not considering everything, but if I had to make his choice given how much he said he wanted to play for Clemson, I would have put the baseball career on hold for at least a couple of years to see if I could get the starting spot after DJ was gone.
The main negative consideration would be the possibility of an injury that would terminate the baseball opportunity. So, with NIL coming into effect this year, I would cut enough NIL deals to pay the premiums on a hefty multi-million dollar injury insurance policy.
That would seem to me to be the way to have my cake and maybe eat it, too.

The university can pay the insurance if I'm not mistaken. He'd be like Trevor on the diamond. He'd make tons of NIL money. As much as he says he wants to play, he'd be an idiot to not come get a degree.
Easy to get swept up thinking you're going to be in the bigs. It's a rough road and it's all business. The scouts and agents don't give a crap about him. If he was my kid, it'd be hit the books, then go.

And how many years does this kid ride a bus around in the Minors? There seems to be a lot of upside coming to Clemson with NIL, a degree, and a chance to play QB this year.

After that Elite 11 performance, it's definitely looking our QB future is DJ in 2021, DJ in 2022, then Klubnik in 2023.

the second least deserving Heisman winner, behind Gino Torretta.
Marshall Faulk, or if not him, Garrison Hearst, should have won the Heisman in '92. Torretta only got it because he was the QB of the "Canes. back when that meant something.
Oh, and the year Weinke won?
Drew Brees finished 3rd, and LaDainian Tomlinson finished 4th.

dollars would be hard to walk away from just to bet on the future, along with the college experience. He would probably be fine just playing baseball, but the spectre of major injury is always hovering in the background if he played college football.
I always think of Coot Marcus Lattimore, and the $$$ he lost by getting hurt to the point that his insurance had to pay off, missing out on an NFL career. The amount he got was peanuts compared to what he would have signed for as a first or second round draft pick, had he not been injured.
The MLB money is guaranteed, and, as someone else said, he could always pull a Chris Weinke later if the beisaball thing doesn't pan out.
