Maybe I’m dense, but it seems like an excuse or a stupid move
Didn’t OSU have a free play? Wouldn’t more time have gone off the clock if they defended the team lay without a penalty?
I’m sure I’m missing something

Nope, the penalty is not significant enough to deter anyone from doing it

It's a loophole that I'm surprised isn't exploited more often.
There were about 10 seconds left on the clock and Ohio State had the ball at Oregon's 43. They needed 10-15 yards to get into FG range and had time for, at most, 2 plays. Oregon called TO and sent 12 men out on the field to defend the 1st play. Ohio State got the 5 yard penalty, but the play took 4 seconds and they didn't get that time back. Oregon got an extra man on the field to defend the play and traded 5 yards for 4 seconds. That's 100% worth it for Oregon. Ohio State now had the ball at the 38 (still outside of FG range) and now only had 6 seconds to try to pick up another 5-10 yards. With 6 seconds on the clock and no timeouts, they were basically limited to sideline throws. Instead the QB ran it and the clock expired.

It was a dumb play by the QB. I remember watching that and expecting him to throw it away so that they at least had a long FG to try and laughing out loud when I saw him run.

It is brilliant, and it worked.

OSU was going to run a play either way. They ran out of time at the end due to the intentional penalty.
Imagine, Ryan Day getting out coached again...

The officials could have called unsportsmanlike conduct and put time back on the clock if they knew it was intentional. I suspect they will do so next time if Oregon does it again. Maybe the NCAA will change the rule if other teams start abusing it.

You can't assess an unsportsmanlike for a penalty that's covered by another rule

It would seem the advantage would be having the extra player on the field to defend the pass and conceding the penalty. Should have had no effect on the time as the play happened with or without the penalty which used up 4 seconds either way.

Maybe they need to reset the game clock to what it was at the start of the play

on some of these exploitable penalties. If Ohio State gets 5 yards without any time coming off the clock that's a completely different situation at the end of the game and OSU probably would've gotten off a FG attempt.

all the penalty did was give OSU 5 yards...nothing more
If anything a good field goal kicker could have made a FG from where they ran the last play. The OSU QB was unaware of the situation obviously because a running clock does not stop except out of bounds/incomplete/first down.

Yeah, dumb move by QB and even dumber that the coaches didn't coach the situation with him during the timeout previous to the play.
Unacceptable if I'm an Ohio State fan. Luckily, I'm not.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Here's why...

What OSU did was not dependent on that 12-man penalty. The OSU QB made that decision with full access to the time remaining. A play was called knowing the time and yardline. OSU didn't run out of time because of a penalty; they ran out of time because the OSU QB made a goof. Also, the penalty moved the ball from a potential 61 yard FG to a potential 56 Yard FG. Were they THAT sure OSU would have gained more otherwise? An impossible FG to a possible FG is a big trade.
It does expose a needed rule change though. So a team can run out extra defenders to sacrifice 5 yards for the time of the play if they choose? 12 man penalty should reset clock if under 2 minutes.

I'd much rather give OSU one play from the 38

than 2 plays from the 43. I'd venture to say that <1% of college kickers have any chance of making a 63 yard game-winning FG.

56 is still pretty darn rare for a college kicker.
