Boy Scouts of America

I was in the Scout fraternity at Clemson.

I belong to Skyuka Lodge 270. I am proud to have been selected with my buddy Calvin Dawkins to join one night as Indians danced at a campfire. It was surreal. It was an honor few receive. Calvin died in VN fighting as a gunner on a helicopter going into rescue troops. He was my main childhood friend.

I also have up a Scout page here on FB "Troop 73". I am proud of how my many friends grew from there. We had leadership from a Navy WW11 pilot Willie Clack, and many more. We accomplished the impossible. Mill Hill kids with "little" were made better men and prepared to face times ahead. Not all had a uniform, some just had a shirt or a hat. Nothing even came close as to influence on me as I went from 11 to 16.
I had collectible Skyuka patches selling for hundreds on ebay before the fire but priceless to me and not for sale.

I believe the highest honor any one from Chester has achieved in a hundred years from Chester was my life buddy Jim Dawkins taking lead of Skyuka.
I will always be a member of Troop 73 and there for those guys.
I never left the Scouts, but the organization left me.
I am OK with that as people have a right to choose and should.
Scouts have changed and is now very different.

We clearly served GOD and aspired to be good men. That was written in the Scout code, but has been removed.
It was not just for 10 year olds but for teens.

I am Eagle Scout from when gaining that for a kid off the mill hill was near impossible. In fact it was impossible for a kid who did not have solid leaders. I had those leaders.
Below is some of us coming into the fold and years later a few us on a trip to Folly Beach as teens. Scouts served us well.
We had bought in 100% to Scouts for years. We were later leaders but far from the only ones. Our numbers were many. Willie Clack never gave up on any kid.
The Boy Scouts of America and our values died years ago.

I would advise my kid not to go there.

"As of July 2023, over 361,000 girls have joined the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), now called Scouts BSA, representing nearly 16% of the total membership. Girls have been allowed to join the Cub Scout program since 2018 and Scouts BSA since 2019."

I guess that's why they're changing the name.

We were all good kids and believed in the Scout oath and scout laws and even today the ones in my troop still living will do anything for you they can. But even with those beliefs, we were still all 100% red blooded American boys full of testosterone. If there had been girls in our troop at Camp Old Indian for a week, there probably would have been trouble. 😉

I was a Boy Scout as a kid and got my Eagle badge. My dad was one of the leaders, we had an outing at the lake and Leroy Brown a good friend of mine fell off his float & no one noticed until time to go when his mother was calling for him.

He drowned that day & that was the end of our group.

I wasn’t there that day, my dad who was always involved told me he felt like we shouldn’t go and we didn’t. I’m thankful my dad listened to that small voice on not going.

His funeral was so tough for all of us.

The Scout Oath andS out Law are the same as they have always been. Rank advancement is the same as it has always been. Scouting is the same as it has always been but some parents want their daughters to have access to the God and country values that boys have access to. Girl Scouting values have changed and conservative parents do not want their daughters exposed that that Girl Scouting teaches. Young girls need the same values training in the form of a camping program that boys do. Do you really want to deprive them and your sons of that opportunity? If your answer is yes you are a very short sighted person and I feel sorry for your son!

There are plenty of choices out there. Just like finding a church or any other group, some will align more closely to what you need/want.

It’s you and your son’s loss. You could also take a leadership position and help guide the troop instead of complaining about how things changed.

I was also an Eagle Scout and in the Skyuka Lodge. My sons were Eagles in Florida. In 1970, there were 5 million boys in scouting. Now, the total of all the youths in scouting is less than one million. Girl Scouts was taken over by Woke ideology. That is why so many girls have joined the Boy Scouts. My daughter hated her Girl Scout experiences even though she earned her Gold Award. She would have been an excellent Boy Scout. Now, scouts has decided to become "inclusive" with taking LGBT youths. Baden Powell would have not believed what changes the organization has adopted. He would have felt that the new scouting organization is no longer "morally straight." If I were bring up a son now, I would have him join Trail Life USA.

Scouts via our church, First Presbyterian, in Rock Hill, finally obtaining the Eagle Award in 1964 at age 17.

One of the best leaders of our Boy Scout troop was a gentleman by the name of Dan McQueen, whose son became a close friend of my youngest brother. As my parents were friends of the McQueens, I'll never forget my Dad's admonishment: "You do exactly what Dan McQueen tells you to do, as he won't put up with any foolishness."

He was right, and as a result, I still credit Mr. McQueen for that Eagle Award, which to me then and now, was a high honor. Our troop was lucky, also, in that a Rock Hillian, allowed us to use his large acreage and hut as our home base. I credit the experiences learned in scouting with the self-confidence that helped me through Clemson, then the Army and on throughout my life.

I understand change, even the necessity for it at times. I don't understand why some people found it necessary to attack and demand a wholesale revision of scouting.

I too am an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow honoree and Philmont Scour Ranch alumnus. Sadly, I didn't plug my boys into scouting for the same reasons and my financial support ended years ago. Scouting "sold out", plain and simple for

Why not join a troop and help guide it correctly? Find one that is strongly supported by a church and you won't have all the 'political correctness' that you worry about.

Get involved and change it for the better. Most local troops haven't 'sold out' or gone woke for corporate money (or whatever that means).

Scouting is the same as it's always been with some updates for "the times". Scouts are still Reverent, and most units are sponsored by churches. There's a lot of changes in the world that kids have to deal with these days. You can't really control what they see or learn in school. In Scouting you can still select a unit that holds closest to your beliefs and volunteer your time to ensure it's success. It is still the best character and skills organization out there for kids.

As far as girls go they were involved in the Exploring side since the 60's I think. Certainly were when I was a kid. Do young women need Scouting? Sure they do. They need that outdoor experience and leadership training just like young men. The program as it is now allows kids to interact and learn in a manner that is managed by the leadership. It's like anything else. Some leaders are better then others, and you can either get involved and help or sit on the sidelines and whine away.

These kids learn a ton in Scouting and in the coed environment they are interacting with what they will in the real world: different people from different places headed toward the same goal.

Is national scouting woke for money? I believe so. I think they are mainly trying to keep their jobs. But local Scouting is controlled by the local council, and the local council board selects the professional scouters in their area. Again, you can get involved and have some say in how the local process works. Likewise units are different in their feel and implementation like always, so find the one you like and help!

As an Eagle Scout from Palmetto Council and member of Skyuka Lodge like many of you here I personally feel the local Scouting is doing great things for kids today.

He is right. And so is the original poster. It's about the adult leadership.

I was in scouts as a kid in the 80s. It sucked. Looking back, it was because our adult leadership sucked.

I started my son in an all boys troop because I wanted him to have the traditional experience. It sucked. Because the adult leadership sucked.

I switched him to another troop, reluctantly picking one with girls. It was great. He had a great year. Why? The adult leadership was fantastic. Some men, some women, but all on the same page making sure the kids learned and had fun.

Like anything else, it's about the people.

OP--your experience in scouts sounds amazing. The people you were with and what y'all achieved is a great story. I'd encourage you to get back involved and share your wisdom and enthusiasm. Kids today aren't broken even if some institutions are at the national level. But at the local level someone like you could make a huge impact. Who gives a #### what some jerk in Washington thinks when you could teach a kid how to fish, camp, etc in your hometown?

As the parent of a boy Eagle Scout and a daughter that was in Girl Scouts

May 23, 2024, 8:26 AM

I would say that the failure is more on Girl Scouts. My daughter was in Girl Scouts for several years. Her troop wanted to focus on homemaking, table etiquette and most importantly... selling cookies. Selling cookies for $4 to 5 when the troop only receives 50-75 cents. She wanted to go camping, hiking, kayaking.

I am 100% sure that this is what has driven girls to pressure the Boy Scouts to accept them.

The boy Scouts were pretty much devastated from the sexual abuse lawsuits so they have no fight and have capitulated to every demand.

I believe there are options other than Boy Scouts for youth these days but are not prevalent.

I was a Scout leader but have retired from that after my son graduated. Scouting and moms do not mix. Scouting with boys and girls can work, but to me it opens up even more issues with overnight camping, etc.

Girls and Boys have been camping together in the BSA since the 1970's, when Venturing became co-ed. Most camp staffs these days are a generous mix of male and female youth AND adults. Camps are very careful and methodical about the rules surrounding camping where both boys and girls are present, and it's worked out very well. All of the youth understand what they are and are not to do, and it's reinforced constantly. Do boys and girls flirt and exchange numbers/snapchats/etc? Of course. But it's very rare for it to go any further than that. I always reinforce to my troops that Scouting is not a dating service.

Scouting has been co-ed in the rest of the Western world--in fact in the rest of the *entire* world save for most Muslim countries--for decades, and it has proven to be successful.

Couldn't disagree more. I am an Eagle Scout '91, Santee 116 (now Muscogee 116) Arrowman, and a volunteer since 2010--including 9 years as Cubmaster, going on my 10th as an Assistant Cubmaster, and have recently volunteered as a Unit Commissioner. I've led 2 crews to Philmont. I helped found a girls' troop in 2019. My children have grown up in Scouting and I have one Eagle (now a Clemson rising junior) and a son working on his Eagle now.

Scouting was my source of father figures when my own father lived in a different state from the time I was 9 years old. It taught me so many good things--leadership, organization, planning, outdoors skills, a love and appreciation for nature. It still teaches ALL these things today. I feel that the leaders in my troop take the concept of being a parental figure for these kids very, very seriously. We want them all to grow up to be better adults and better citizens.

Scouting, in my experience, is the same program it was when I joined it 40 years ago. The biggest difference is that council-level activities aren't as plentiful because of personnel issues (both staffing and participating). It still instills the great, timeless values of the Scout Law and I couldn't be prouder to be a volunteer. It is still the finest youth organization in the country. And contrary to what you assert, God has NOT been removed from the program.

No, we no longer exclude girls and we no longer exclude people based on sexual orientation. That's forward progress, in my opinion. Stagnation leads to irrelevance and death. Although I personally have no daughters of my own, I believe strongly in the value of having girls in the program. What could be better for our country than having *twice as many* Eagle scouts in our society? After all we need all the principled leaders we can get.

Scouting is deeply ingrained in American culture, and now Scouting America is for ALL Americans who choose to participate. It has emerged from bankrupty and controversy stronger, leaner, and better. Though numbers have been declining noticeably in the last 5 years due to controversy and COVID, I--and many of the volunteers I speak with--feel very strongly that the program is about to turn the corner.

If anything I feel that my Eagle rank has been made stronger and more virtuous over the last several years, and I look forward to many years to come in the country's premiere youth program.

You can see in this thread why scout ranks are depleting. Plenty of former scouts claiming 'things have changed' or 'gone woke'. Instead of getting involved locally and guiding a troop, they choose to sit on the sideline and complain.

Exactly. And there's always grumbling within the ranks, of course, but it ALWAYS subsides after a year or two. In 2019 when they opened the full program to girls, plenty of Scouters proclaimed it was going to be a disaster. 5 years later they are almost 100% behind the change because they see what a difference it's making to these girls, to families, to communities, to the Scouting image at large.

I agree with the positive commenters in this thread in regards to the “Boy Scouts of America”.

That said, I don’t love the name change. But the name needs to reflect the group that it serves. I am glad that the BSA program accepted girls into its ranks. My 2 children just finished up their Cub Scout/ Webelo Journey. My son does not want to move on, but my daughter does! The church that sponsors our scouting program supports 3 separate units. A Boys Troop, a Girls Troop, and Cub Scout Pack. So my daughter has loved the last 2 months with her new set of scout friends.

During these past 2 months my daughter has been working on her first rank. She has learned the oath:
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

She has learned that a Scout is:
• Trustworthy,
• Loyal,
• Helpful,
• Friendly,
• Courteous,
• Kind,
• Obedient,
• Cheerful,
• Thrifty,
• Brave,
• Clean,
• and Reverent.

Shes working on learning how to live up to the Scout Motto, of Be Prepared!

She is learning that as an American, she will do her best to - Be clean in my outdoor manners.
Be careful with fire. Be considerate in the outdoors, and Be conservation minded!

She also knows how to tie a Square Knot, Bowline, Two half hitch and a Taut-line hitch, and when they should be used.

Shes has demonstrated how to safely use a pocket knife. Even the can opener function on a fancy multi-tool. I know several “country boys” that cant do that and have cut themselves pretty badly by just thrusting a knife through the top of a lid….

I am Eagle Scout. So it seems like the same content I had to learn.

I also have learned, experienced, and totally agree with Lakedudes comments that it’s volunteers at the council, troop, and pack level that make the programs go. You can have a lot of influence on how your program is administered by showing up and making the most of the program your kids/ community are involved in. One of my favorite quotes is “Decisions are made by those who show up!” That’s the truth in just about everything! So dont give up on Scouting. If you love/d, have found memories of scouting, then get involved. Help keep the ideals of teaching citizenship, service, leadership and character development to young people.
