Just finished "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shriner. It was obnoxiously long.
Now onto "#### Deus" by Yuval Noah Harrari. Definitely enjoying it.
Drop some recommendations. Preferably history/politics/economics related.

surprise, surprise. I have been going back and reading some of the original "Masterworks" of fiction and science fiction. Frankenstein, Dracula, and the like. Currently I am reading the original HG Wells "The War of the Worlds." I have read "The Time Machine" so many times, I could probably quote it, but I will probably tackle "The Island of Doctor Moreau" next. I always thought it too bizarre, and I suspect I will still think that after I read it, but will try to give it a fair reading.

I read Lord of the Rings (Hobbit and Silmarillion included) last year and Game of Thrones this year. That was enough for my sci-fi binge.

It was so difficult. But I knew Rings of Power was coming out on Prime. So I wanted to know how it would end before I watched it. That was my only motivation.

just finished the new Michael Connelly offering "Desert Star". It features detectives Renee Ballard and possibly (although I hope not) the last ride of Detective Harry Bosch.
Just like our music heroes, sadly, even our fictional literary heroes eventually get old. Harry Bosch had a great ride, hope Connelly lets him have a definitive last one after this.

Have read The Hobbit 7 times and Trilogy 5, Silmarilion once or twice. Reread part of Unfinished Tales to catch up some of the Rings of Power lore. The series is interesting but does stray from JRRT's writing. Working on The Wheel of Time and on number 8 I have bogged down. I plan to pick it up again soon. Let us know what you find that is good.

I'm listening to American Lion by Jon Meacham right now about Andrew Jackson
Lots of connections to Fort Hill, John C. etc.
Might have to buy a hard copy because there are so many good quotes and relevance to today's political scene.

I also have to recommend Dune - I was physically impelled to keep reading it into the night/morning.
After that I went back and read the Foundation Trilogy by Asimov.

Read Dune a couple of times. Loved the adaption of it in the 2021 movie version of Dune. It was spot on. Anxiously awaiting Dune: Part 2.

I read this book a long time ago. I believe it was called "Fear no evil" by Natan Sharansky. Pretty much anything by Solzhenitsyn is good.

I wouldn't recommend Little Woman. One of me elementary school teachers assigned Little Men for the boys to read and Little Woman for the girls. She ran out of copies of Little Men and made me read Little Woman, the only boy to have to do so. Teachers, please don't do something like this to your students. It turned me so against reading that I never read another book to this day. I made it through the rest of school and college reading Spark Notes just to pass tests.

"Devotion" by Adam Mako. The story of Navy pilots, and best friends; Ens. Jesse Brown, and LTJG.Tom Hudner. Two very remarkable men. It takes place during the Korean War, and not only does it tell their story, but it also tells a lot about the 9500 Marines that faced over 200,000 Chinese soldiers, as The Marines covered the withdrawal at Chosin. It may not be on the intellectual level of some of the books y'all are talking about, but still a very good read. They say The Korean War is the forgotten war, but it shouldn't be. Incidentally; Ens. Brown was the man, the ship I served on for over three years, was named for.

Read several months ago "Checkmate Berlin" about the Allies establishment of the four power governance of the city, their interaction and its effects on the population. Also "Forty Autumns" about a young teenager's escape twice from post war East Germany, its effects on the family remaining there and changes to the country brought about by Soviet dominated rule.

Going old school detective classics with Dashiell Hammett (Red Harvest, The Dain Curse, The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key, The Thin Man), Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep, Farewell My Lovely), and James M. Cain (Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Career in C Major, Mildred Pierce), Donald Westlake/Richard Stark (Point Blank, The Grifters, Parker books).
Without these writers and the characters Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, there would likely be no Ian Fleming or James Bond. The movie actors playing the characters in these books were the Hollywood tough guys -- Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Edward G. Robinson, Lee Marvin, Robert Duvall, George C. Scott, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Jason Statham and more. Good stuff.

Walking in the dust of Rabbi Jesus is a good one that gives perspective on western culture shaping the way we read and interpret scripture. Also helps you understand scripture from the middle east perspective.

I'm impressed you read all of Third Reich. I got half way through and had to stop. That level of evil is too unsettling...
I'm reading "Jaymer Crow" by Wendell Berry. It's different. Like a relaxing walk in the countryside. He is quite a storyteller. First book of his I've read.

if you haven't already read them. Great storytelling and historical characters, against the backdrop of a particular historical period in America. Doctorow is a fine writer, and gives accurate, detailed historical descriptions, while taking enogh literary liscense to fully develop characters.
I have recommended them many times over the years, and have read each at least 3 times.

Phantom Warrior is really good if you like war books.
Into Thin Air by Krakauer is excellent.
The Boys of 67 is a really good Vietnam book.
Outlaw Platoon by Sean Parnell
The Game of the Century by Michael Corcoran is a good football book about the Nebraska-Oklahoma game of 1971.
Helter Skelter is a great true crime book about Charles Manson.
Lions of Kandahar is a great read
The Trident by Jason Redmon is a good Navy Seal book.
Devotion as mentioned above is great and the movie isn't bad.
Across the River is a great book about high school football in that vile and disgusting city of New Orleans. Made me glad to have had a father.
Those are just a few good non-fiction books I remember enjoying, not get back to lying about reading Plato and other gibberish.

Boring. I just finished Fearless by Eric Blehm and I’d recommend it if you don’t like reading just exciting stuff by Karl Marx.

A couple non fiction good ones I’ve encountered recently include: The Precipice- great sober analysis of existential threats to mankind, Empires of the Sea- interesting dive into Turks vs Holy Roman Empire post crusades, and 1491-interesting history and insight into the Columbian exchange and how they impacted the new and old old worlds.
Nonfiction- recently finished Shadows of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Phenomenal fantasy series (not typically my thing, but could not put them down).
The Essentialist is also a really good one that has been impactful in how I operate in daily personal and work life… highly recommend.

It's a book about the Bammers, but it's still a really cool look into tailgating culture in the deep south.

Historical? Hmm. I guess I would the Game of Thrones, the series of books. It was very historical. It was fascinating to see what life was like before dragons went extinct.

Rising Tide. Can’t recall the author offhand. Written in early 200’s, I think. It is the incredible story of the devadtating Mississippi River flood of 1927(?), how the federal government handled that flood, and the subsequent efforts to “control the river”.

Good recommendation. John M Barry is the author, but I wouldn’t say it changed America in anyway. The Mississippi still floods pretty often.
