Supposedly it was a political statement. I don't watch soccer, so I had no clue, but if I had watched, I think it would have gone right over my head.

An unpatriotic display by the soccer coach, likely a ridiculous form of protest in support of some ficticious bs social justice cause or he's one of those empty vessels that believe it's trendy/cool to dislike the US & it's "capitalist imperialism". (prolly imagines himself as some kind of revolutionary)

He is clearly making a political statement, slamming the US. His shirt says ‘States’, it’s obviously missing the UNITED part. The clear implication being that the United States are not united, that we’re a divided, country. That is not patriotic, it’s just the opposite. It’s a disgusting display non-patriotism and the coach should’ve been forced to remove that shirt by the United States soccer Federation. Absolutely disgusting.

I very much doubt it. He just usually wears what Nike gives him, and Nike does the designs with very little input from the USSF because they have the sponsorship contract...and Nike does what they want, always have. Our new blue Nike home unis were described by one wag as: "What is that blue camo stuff? Are we invading the home planet of Blue Man Group now?" Also, that "States" thing isn't new, they've been doing that all through qualifying and nobody had a problem with it up until now.
And yes, he's always been, to put it politely, "minimalist". A lot of coaches wear suits on the sideline.

Berkhalter isn’t making any statement, it’s Nike branding you DF. Quit being a wokeflake, the world ain’t out to get you , and not everyone hates America. We might hate this kind of stupidity , but not our country.

How many games of soccer have you watched again?
Gregg Berhalter wasn't making any kind of political statement or "virtue signaling". He'd have to have a personality for that and Gregg...doesn't. It's obvious you haven't watched so much as one interview with the dude or you'd know that already.
"Understated" and "minimalist" are two kind words for Gregg Berhalter. "Utterly bland" is probably a better one.
Not the hugest fan of the dude as a coach - mostly because Gregg is so durn undynamic, rigid, and plays his "System" come he!! or high water, whether it's working or not - but he's never shown himself to be remotely political before and he isn't now. He'd regard it as a distraction. I literally do not think he thinks about anything but soccer.
This incessant tribal hostility about things people know nothing about is...past the point of ridiculous. Love the World Cup or hate it - and there's a lot to hate about this edition of the World Cup, especially with Qatar hosting - it's still the biggest sporting event in the world, with ten times the viewership of a Super Bowl, and the only thing some folks can do is criticize the shirt of a coach they literally know zero about in a game they never watch, don't remotely understand, and dump on at every opportunity. And this is a young and exciting generation of talent the US has, however much a lot of us don't particularly love Gregg.
I'll just shake my head sadly and walk away here.

So he just chose to wear a black shirt, with Nike logo, with no pride of the country he's coaching at "the biggest sporting event in the world, with ten times the viewership of a Super Bowl"?
And it's because the dude is bland?

Yup. Who knows what's going on at Nike, but the USSF's national teams, from the men to the women to the youth teams to the coaches, are contractually bound to wear what Nike gives them. Nike paid a lot of money for that privilege.

There are some who struggle with the world changing. Entrepreneurs have discovered that stoking these fears can be lucrative.
In this case, the USMNT coach has upset the mentally fragile by wearing a shirt that says “STATES” instead of “UNITED STATES”. It is obviously the least important issue of the day but a trigger issue for some. I guess because the coach doesn’t love America as much as them?
Clickbaity websites and corporations have latched on to this as the outrage du jour, making money off the rubes who get angry at whatever.
You’re now caught up.
