This is a reaction to the other biggest shopping day of the year - Amazon's Prime Day - being repeatedly postponed, now into fall. The retailers are concerned that customers won't have much left to spend on Black Friday with the shopping periods so close together - hence the change.

Black Friday was moved to Thursday Thanksgiving Day by the retailers for some time now. Already ruined Thanksgiving and the fun of getting up early to go shopping for the early bird deals on Friday.
