Fred Cone. Played 8 man football in High School. After Clemson, he played for the Green Bay Packers and was, at one time, their forth leading career rusher.

Jethro D. de Bodine's cousin did indeed do well.

He never achieved Brain Surgeon and Agent Double Naught spy status like Jethro, but hey, there was only one Jethro D. Bodine.
(You could have thrown Major League pitcher in there as well, if he hadn't had to lube up the baseball with possum fat before chunking it!)

Gaines was such a great story

And we have Steve Taneyhill of all people to thank for helping make it happen. RIP Gaines . . . I'll never forget that game at Wake. I've never seen a defensive player single handedly TAKE OVER and turn the tide of a game like he did.

Hunter Renfrow is the name that should immediately come

to mind. However, Hunter's vacuum cleaner hands were well documented from the start, along with his uncanny ability to get open on third down seemingly at will.
To me, the more incredible story is Wayne Gallman. From an almost afterthought signing, to being the feature back and going on to a serviceable NFL career and possibly a decent free agent contract this year, Wayne worked his tail off to get to where he is. Neither a speed merchant nor a shifty cutter, he honed his game on pass blocking, grit, and determination.

I think they only targeted him one time down the field. He caught it for a 50 yd. td pass against a good Maryland team.

I remember everyone saying we signed Wayne gallman and Ryan Carter just to get Ndkemche (however you spell his name) and turns out they had a better college career then him winning a national championship. Ryan was a baller at DB, one of my favorite in the past 10 years

Who was that small walk on center around 15 years ago? Tommy (something)? He was first team a couple years. I remember one game he threw up on the ball or darn close to it...before he snapped it!

First one that came to my mind.
Walk-on to starting center, I believe. Threw up on the ball and then snapped it in Georgia game when it was about 120 degrees and we were getting killed. Legendary stuff.

Chandler Catanzaro
I believe he was working for a grocery store when he decided to come to a walkon kicker tryout at Clemson.
Now he ranks with the top kickers in school history and had several very nice years in the NFL.
Other contenders for me include:
Hunter Renfrow - was too small to play for a big school
Adam Humphries - "the other Dorman WR"
Isaiah Simmons - recruited late as a fill-in safety recruit
Vic Beasley - RB/TE/OLB unherealded recruit turned All-American and Pro Bowl DE
I'm sure there are many more, but those really jump out at me.
Honorable mentions go to Will Spiers and Andy Teasdall as QBs - Check the tape!

I don't see how Renfrow can't be #1
I believe several could be debated for #2....Grady Jarrett included in that group

I remember him being targeted one time down the field and it was a 50 yd td pass against a good Maryland team. He was very talented but coaches here at that time did not utilize it. I lived in San Francisco when he made THE CATCH, however he caught many other passes and was a favorite of the fans there.

for Cone, McDowell and even Gallman. Btw how many schools would’ve even stood by its offer to Gallman when the DL five star from the same school decided to flip for the money from Ole Miss? Great talent evaluation by our staff!
