There have been many great instrumental solos in rock music. What comes to mind for you?
Mine is the organ solo in Light My Fire.

Can't argue with the solos in "Stairway" or "Free Bird". Both of those took the song to another level.

When I think of instrumental solos, I want something more than just the tried and true formula of:
First Verse-second verse-chorus-solo-repeat first verse-chorus-chorus-to fade out.

Two came to mind (however obscure) that actually added character to the song. Both Billy Joel songs.

The harmonica of Toots Theileman on "Leave a Tender Moment" and the accordion of Dominic Cortese on "Vienna Waits for You". Both added so much to the songs, but were not the main focus of either.

Speaking of Lynyrd Skynyrd, anytime Billy Powell has an opening for the piano just makes the song that much better.

LOL, I see what you did there. I'm old. yeah.

My point was to think of something other than the gratuitous guitar riff in the middle of every rock song ever formulated. That's why I included Stairway and Free Bird. Their up tempo solos actually made the songs better. Dare I say, without them neither would have made it on the air.

It's probably why we gravitate to just those few. Most just aren't that memorable, they're just there.
I should have included anything Eric Clapton does. Or George Harrison on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. They bring so much more to a song than just a bridge.

Not exactl a "Rock" instrumental, but Tony Peluso's work on the Carpenters "Goodbye to Love" is excellent.

His first solo in the song is good, and an easy-going melodic riff - but his second solo toward the end of the song is outstanding in its simplicity and drive:

I like a number of the ones above. Something different would-be KING CRIMSON's 21st Century Schizoid Man as well as a number of their songs.

Thin Lizzy has 3 part lead guitar like Skynyrd and other great guitar bands. Cowboy Song has some great 3 part leads, but as far as frying the fret . . Emerald is my choice. The 3 guitars sizzle together, just plain cool!!

Pretty much any solo by Stevie Ray Vaughn. SRV shreds in "Look at Little Sister" and the guy on keyboard is awesome as well.

I'm a fan of all the classic solos that everyone has mentioned. I would say the best are any Stevie Ray Vaughan solos. One I always thought was underrated, was Californication by RHCP

Brian May. I thought he did a great job with the song he wrote and sang - "'39" from A Night at the Opera. He also did a great job of playing a flamenco-style interlude, along with Steve Howe of Yes, on "Innuendo", a throwback to their "Bohemian Rhapsody" style of changing moods, styles, and tempo in one song.

As a middle-schooler, I remember hearing Elton John's cover of "Pinball Wizard" and was impressed with his piano skills.
