Still an Aamir Simms fan, despite this controversial tweet..

I hope all of you are brave enough to say the same.

Because it was a change to a tradition, and not an official

Feb 4, 2022, 10:36 AM

one. Similar to that stupid paw symbol the students tried to initiate last year. Don't go creating or changing the gameday traditions just because.

I have many other pet peeves that I can't explain, but this one just seems like change for the sake of change...and it sounds stupid IMO. I am sure many will disagree, but many will agree. Fire away!

Re: Because it was a change to a tradition, and not an official

Feb 4, 2022, 11:00 AM

But the Paw itself hasn't been around even 50 years yet . Is that tradition?
We were still wearing orange and blue as fans well into the 90s and people still complain today that purple should never be worn on the football field. A lot of people.
I am not an alum as I have stated in the past , but my daughter now is ...and she loves the woo-hoo so I am in support.
I said what I said.
I am prepared to accept the slings and arrows.

One point of correction. The Tiger Paw has been around more than 50 years. The Clemson Tiger Paw was introduced to Clemson people in July of 1970.

You're correct , I forgot how old I had gotten ?? @ 52.
Anyway , not so long ago the paw wasn't in our vernacular as being tied to the university.

Curious as to why "people still complain today that purple should never be worn on the football field"?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The paw is an official logo

Feb 4, 2022, 2:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Because it was a change to a tradition, and not an official ]

A bunch of random students or fans didn't just force it on us. The University actually paid a marketing firm to come up with that.

I am an alumnus, my son is a 4th generation alumnus, and my daughter is a freshman. I hate the woohoo and how they feel about it doesn't really concern me. I graduated in 1990 and never heard the woohoo once as a student. And I dispute your claim about blue vs purple. But we can disagree.

Re: The paw is an official logo

Feb 4, 2022, 6:09 PM

I just remember orange and white in the early 80s. That’s even what the chant at the game was. And the spring game was the orange/white game. I remember seeing some blue fan gear but at that point I don’t think blue or purple were recognized as school colors.

Let me do what they want to. If enough people like it then it will become tradition and if not then no one will remember it!

Yeah, if it ain’t the way we did it in my day, it is EVIL.
No let’s go try to find an RC and a moonpie…good luck to you.
As an old fart, I’m sick of old farts limiting young people due to the tradition argument.
Let’s line up next year in the single wing ala Johnny Majors, without face masks, with slow small white guys as players…
It is tradition guys, it must be done.

Re: I guess you aren't one of those (like me) who gripe

Feb 4, 2022, 5:14 PM

I agree with you in not liking the woohoo, but I don’t agree with this analogy. Tiger Band hasn’t changed Tiger Rag. (well actually they have made subtle changes if you listen carefully how they play it now vs. how they played it in the 70s and 80s, but overall the notes and rhythm are the same.)

The woohoo is just a bunch of silly fans. While I don’t care for it and don’t participate in it, I remain pretty indifferent at the end of the day.

If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always got.

Think about how great things would be today if Henry Ford had just been content riding a horse. Life would be much simpler these days and we wouldn't be dealing with a computer chip shortage that prevents horses from being able to walk.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow, that's some leap!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson traditions have evolved over the years from

Feb 4, 2022, 12:08 PM

uniforms to helmets to cheers, even to attire for games.

Death Valley has evolved into some spectacular venue that I never imagined. Look how the game, teams, staffs have evolved.

Heck, if someone had told me we'd build an Oculus, I'd have asked, "What the he1l for?" lol

Thus, I've taken the attitude of deferring to our younger folks on their preferences, as they'll certainly have to live with the changes longer than I. I will admit to deferring from performing the "Woo Hoo" and still like the "Fight Tigers Fight Dammmmmit, Fight" in the C-L-E-M (or now 1-2-3-4) cheer, AND I do miss our old, beloved "Rat sh*t, bat sh*t" cheer!

People in the stands look at me like I’m crazy when I yell fight Tigers, Fight dammitttt, fight, fight, fight!

I didn’t even know what an oculus was until they started building it.

I don’t mind the woohoo. Doesn’t make a difference one way or the other to me. Now where I draw the line is when some in the student section have started adding expletives during the pause between the “O” and the “N” at the end of Tiger Rag. That crosses a line for me. Big time. It has been around for a few years but thankfully hasn’t caught on much. I find it embarrassing and totally inappropriate. It has been captured on TV a few times and it makes me cringe. Not a good look for Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Still an Aamir Simms fan, despite this controversial tweet..

Feb 4, 2022, 12:34 PM

Love Amir and still do but the woo-hoo is awful. I bought the long sleeve and the short sleeve "ban the woo-hoo" T shirts that some group put out years ago. I think Plyler may have been involved in that organization but when they teach it to the freshman students (brain wash them) it is here to stay. Anyone using my tickets and sitting with me is warned up front, don't do the woo-hoo in my presence.
