Interesting Stats from Bowers in 2010...
Aug 15, 2013, 2:44 PM
|
|
2010: Second on Clemson team in tackles (63), and leads in tackles for loss (24), sacks (15.5) an quarterback pressures (17)...his 24 tackles for loss have resulted in 150 lost yards for Clemson's opponents
Now from the ESPN Super-Pumper-SEC-fest Heisman Watch:
But Clowney is the most disruptive player in college football and is a potential No. 1 pick in next spring's NFL draft. The 6-foot-6, 274-pound junior had 54 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks last season.
How come bowers wasn't automatically given the Heisman his senior year and deemed the most disruptive player in CFB? Interesting.

Because he knocked a players helmet off?

Cuz the stats don't show it.
I know Clowney will be a Junior but those stats aren't exceptional. If he puts up even bigger numbers this year than great. I want to see that happen first (I don't really WANT to see that happen but you know what I mean).

9 or 10 guys blocking Clowney on almost every play. And those are usually SEC teams!

had--so far. He could have 20 sacks or something this year and make me change my mind. He's had 1 amazing game vs us and 1 play that everyone saw--other than that he's a freakish physical specimen who's lazy and takes entire series off. His hype is all about potential, not results.

And Bowers was a great player here and is probably better against the run. Still he can't touch Clowney's athleticism and pass rushing ability.

I thought sacks were the result of pass rushing ability.
15.5 > 13

Bowers was able to overpower a lot of O-linemen his junior year, but he never really had any strong pass rushing moves. Clowney is much more explosive off the line and flat out gets to the QB faster.

And anyway I don't really get you and other people's point with this. Clowney is probably the best college football player in the country right now and will most likely go #1 overall in the draft after this season. There's no reason to try to act like he isn't good or whatever just because he plays for that other team.
They have some good players and so do we. It just looks petty from both sides to try and belittle that.

Interesting.
You're comparing Bowers' junior year to Clowney's Sophomore year. In Bowers' sophomore year, he had 3 sacks and 27 tackles.
If Clowney improves even half as much as Bowers did between his sophomore and junior seasons, Derrick Thomas' sack record is in danger.

He was out for 3 games that due to an injury.

And was probably slow returning that year from the injury.

ah. so, if not for those 3 games, and that lingering "slow"-ness, he would've had nearly twice as many tackles and 4 or 5 times as many sacks?
The fact that Clowney is getting this hype reflects well on Bowers. Stick with me here: Bowers was widely considered a first round draft pick for the entire 2010 campaign. The fact that Clowney nearly matched Bowers' numbers while he was a year younger is the reason he's getting preseason Heisman hype.

to your point about Bowers, he was considered a possible #1 pick in the draft until the injury issue was discovered. Had he come back for his senior year, he would have been considered one of the top players in the country regardless of position. So, he got his props, too.
Doo Doo is a beast, but I will say that I think the Michigan play has taken him over the top just because of the sensationalism of the helmet coming off - nobody points out that he was completely unblocked so the RB didn't have a chance.

The thing that makes me mad is ESPN is one of the biggest reasons Clowney is so big in the Heisman race, and predicted to be #1 pick in NFL draft, even if he doesn't play. Don't get me wrong, Clowney is one heck of a player, but ESPN is building him up bigger than he is.

ESPN does build him up quite a bit. Maybe ESPN will have a 30 for 30 special on him titled " The Doo Doo that Couldn't be flushed"
