Basketball update

Looking at the Wake game, it was a loss that has been forgotten. IMO the refs were not great, but we also beat ourselves up a bit and didn’t have Chase Hunter. Wake is the hottest team in the ACC besides us and UVA right now, so another reason to ease up about it.

The best that came from the Wake game was the growth from Chauncey Wiggins. Even in a loss, we still showed team growth.

The main thing that has affected Brownell’s success in the past is his recruiting. It’s getting better, but more often than not, we have one main guy carrying the team. KJ McDaniels, Jaron Blossomgame, Aamir Simms, PJ Hall (before this year). But this team has multiple players that could score at will if they very much tried.

I don’t know if we’ll finish #1 in the ACC, and odds are we may not. But unless the old Brad curse is looming in the near future, this team has a chance to go father than people may even imagine out of them. I’m talking Final 4. If healthy, and we stay consistent with how we play for the whole way out.

I would love to be in the top 4 in the regular season and win a game in the ACC Tournament which means semi finals. Realistic, maybe? Realistic for NCAA, a dream of a Sweet 16 berth.

I agree with the synopsis of ROYBus10® above. However, we had a good starting five (Tyson, PJ Hall, Galloway, Chase Hunter, & Hemenway) that together played great this year. Even with the nagging injury that has kept Hemenway out of the lineup for 8 games (& counting), we still played fantastically--with great contributions from the young bench, particularly from Schieffelin & Middlebrooks! However, I don't believe our young bench will be able to step in for both Hemenway & Chase Hunter for Clemson to continue playing winning football.

Additionally, while PJ Hall has played great this year, he is still recovering from the two surgeries he had last year (which is particularly noticeable in the drop-off in his rebounding this year). Also, based on my own experience (& experiences of other people I know) with Hemenway's injury, I don't see Hemenway coming back this year to play effectively. I am hopeful that Chase Hunter comes back in the next couple of games. If he does, I believe we can still have a great season. But the silence about his current status is definitely a worry.

If neither Hemenway or Chase Hunter comes back, I am very discouraged in our chances of having a good season. And even if either or both of them come back into the lineup soon, I don't see Clemson having a good season if we suffer any nagging injuries to Tyson, Hall, or Galloway in the remainder of the season.

It's a shame because the entire team has played their hearts out, but we still don't have the depth to overcome any significant injuries! MHO

I think you may be way too focused on the negative outcome of all situations. I understand this comes along with being a Clemson basketball fan over the years and it’s a hard mindset to get over.

Everyone knows the best part of this team is the chemistry. You don’t have that type of love for each other without getting through whatever tough times they’ve been through together. Either PJ’s long battle brought them closer or other things in general. But my point is, this team is different because it seems like we’re able to be so mentally strong. I understand the effect of injuries, but I really wouldn’t worry about it. At this point, Hunter will sit until he’s 100% because we honestly don’t need him at this moment. But Beadle played better than Hunter against Duke. So long way to go.

It could be argued that we have played better without Hemenway. We move the ball better and play more high/low with PJ and Schieffelin which leads to higher percentage shots. At the very least, I would say Hemenway was playing too many minutes prior to his injury. There was at least one game where he had the most minutes of anyone on the team. That was early before PJ was back in playing shape but that is still too many minutes for a guy who’s only offensive weapon is the turn and shoot 3 pointer.
