Bama at 7

I think everyone and his brother has pointed out that Bama moving up 3 spots is ridiculous. And I sure don't want to open the floodgates to all the crying about SEC bias. So I tried to take a rational and simple look at the situation.

First of all, Miami is getting hosed here, but we have all spoken about how shaky they have looked, even with one loss. They might actually need to be at 8, but not behind Bama.

After you correct for that, we have four SEC 8 & 2 teams vying for spots 8 - 11.

Georgia should be 8. They have lost only to # 7 Bama and #9 Ole Miss.

Bama should be 9. Their loss to Vandy looks better than the other losses

Tenn should be 10. Their loss to Arkansas looks better than Ole Miss's 2 losses to Kentucky & LSU

Ole Miss brings up the rear at 11, although SMU, BYU, and A & M might have an argument there.

These are all top twenty teams who have been beating each other up pretty good. I hope they continue to do that in such a fashion that one of them falls out of the top twelve.

When the ESECPN has bought and paid for a product, they want maximum exposure that has NOTHING to do with reality...... Just tape the windows, its a hurricane, ok? We can be upset as much or as little as we choose but surprise isn't in the mix for me anymore. It is not dissimilar to the Heisman Trophy Awarding process. You exclude Deshaun and Trevor because it is in your best interest, not because it meets the test of reality. I am convinced that Alabama, The Bucknutz and the Woverines could be terrible but because they appeal to bigger marketplace segments, they would generate more "Playoff Attraction". That is pure shiite but so is ESECPN, so no more surprise.

It's a really difficult circle-logic problem, but I think you nailed it.

The H2H issue - Georgia > Tennessee > Alabama > Georgia

Georgia beat Tennessee but lost to Alabama and Ole Miss. They also have significant wins over Texas and Clemson. I think they clearly deserve the top seed of the 4 in the discussion.

After that, it's a mess:

Tennessee beat Alabama but lost to Georgia, while Alabama beat Georgia.
Tennessee's other loss is to 5-5 Arkansas on the road.

Alabama beat Georgia but lost to Tennessee, who lost to Georgia.
Alabama's other loss is to 6-4 Vanderbilt on the road.

I'd say Bama and Tennessee resumes are nearly identical.

Ole Miss beat Georgia and has a significant win against SC. They also demolished Arkansas, who beat Tennessee.
Ole Miss' losses are to 4-6 Kentucky at home and 6-4 LSU on the road.

I agree with you that Ole Miss is behind the other two. They have nice wins, but that home loss to Kentucky is just as bad as - if not worse than - our home loss to Louisville.

Texas A&M is also 8-2 like the other teams above. But, they haven't played any of TN/AL/MS and they have two double-digit losses. I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose to both Auburn and Texas, and I think the Texas loss will be by 14+.

bluejay,

Yeah, its a bit of a round-robin (pun intended), but the main point is none of the SEC rankings are out-of-hand. One can argue the finer points but they are all high quality teams - with toughass schedules.

Not a lot of talk about Notre Dame sitting up there with a home loss to Northern Illinois. I know they beat A&M in College Station, but that loss is hard to overlook.

actually in a way Bamas 3 spot leap with a win of mercer, could be used to argue a clemson win over ranked SEC gamecocks should be worth 5- 6 spot bump for clemson.

i still think the vandy loss is even worse than GT loss for miami......i personally think a haynes king gt beats vandy.........one scenario no one has considered is what if Georgia Tech beats georgia.......unlikely but they have a tendency to play good against better competition

Bama didn't move up because of Mercer. They moved up because BYU and Tennessee dropped. And their win over UGA got stronger, which may be a reason why they jumped Miami (plus Miami is overrated).

Penn St (best win vs 7-3 Illinois), Indiana (best win vs 5-5 Michigan), Notre Dame (with a loss to NIU, they should be out. Best win vs 8-2 aTm) are all too high. The pro-big10 committee is only looking at records and totally ignoring their cupcake schedules. They have not WATCHED the games. Some people feel that Miami is too high as well, with their ref hookups they should really have 3 losses.

My top 12 would be
Oregon
OhSt
Texas
Bama
UGA
Miami
Indiana
Ole Miss
Tenn
Penn St
ND
SMU

None of the above top 6 teams fear Penn St, Indiana, or ND. My top 6 would be all favored over Penn St, Indiana, and ND.
