I think a major improvement with the automatic bids would be to put them in, but reserve the byes for the 4 top ranked teams. Then the first round would consist of better matchups. I was ok with us having to play first round and not crazy about Boise and ASU seeded as top 4 with byes. It’s not like we are ever gonna be rid of rankings and it makes sense for consensus top 4 to await teams that make it through.

I've read this same ESPN article. Says we have this thru the 25 playoffs. Then a new deal will ve done for 26. That version appears to be moving to a 14 team field. Top 2 champs get a bye and then the others play ...

5-10
6-9
7-8
Higher seeds host. Then you have an 8 playoff after reseeding. The conference champs and top non power 4 get a spot but no other guarantees.

Yes the CFP committee would seed the top 4 - as they did this year. The conference champions were all seeded based on their position in the rankings. They just got moved into top 4 positions based on those rankings relative to the other auto bids. There is no reason for this and it messes up the matchups.

So…you want to reintroduce subjectivity where the “pollsters “ get to decide who the s ranked higher? Instead of playing the games based upon merit?

No. The rankings are still part of this as it currently stands. A big part of it. Winning a conference should get you in. I just don’t think it makes sense to have a ranking system then throw it out for 4 teams and place them in top 4 seeding while everyone else in the field is still subject to the ranking they had.

the RANKING should be the seeding.
Boise.....ASU........and had it happened Clemson getting a bye/top 4 is a complete botchery of the playoffs.

Yep. If the top 4 had gotten the byes Texas would have gotten one and Clemson would have gone to South Bend. And I think all the first round games would have been better.

Yea they would have to work something out on that. Possibly penalize teams for opting out in some way that makes losing the game better than skipping it. Not sure. Definitely a consideration that would have to be studied. Good point.
