Athletes you Hated, But have grown to like.

Baker Mayfield is a guy that I hated at Oklahoma and Cleveland.

But now I cheer for him.

Definitely Baker Mayfield. Big time. Love that guy now. That run right there reinforced that. Also, the Browns sent him off to the Panthers to die, but he overcomes and is a steal right now for the Buccaneers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Steve Smith was that guy for me back in the day

5

Jan 12, 2025, 9:29 PM

he was just a loud mouth trash talker to me and then I started to notice all the big defensive backs try to step to him and he'd just run right past them, through them or just grab their facemasks and throw them down like they were tiny ants. Never really saw anybody get the best of him.

Ben Boulware ran over Baker after that last int. in the 2015 Playoff game. Kneed him in the jaw!

You've never coached football then. fights happen all the time at practice.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Man, be quiet. I have enough football experience to know that

Jan 13, 2025, 9:19 AM

Getting arrested for assault and putting a teammate in the hospital for two days for a fight during a film session isn’t normal.

I was gonna say the exact same thing … not a huge fan in college but the way he has kind of finally found himself in the nfl and the fire he plays with is super fun to watch… unfortunately I’m a phins fan but I def pull for the Bucs and baker.

I live in PA and know several people who played with him at Albright.

I hated him when he was running for office. Then he had the stroke, struggled some and now seems to be a true politician that puts his people first and isn’t afraid to flex on topics on both sides of the fence.

his constituents instead of his pocketbook. He,Fetterman,is another reason I don't gamble. Because if I did, I would have bet he was going to be one of ,if not the worst of the members of Congress. As it turns out, he is a member of the common sense party. And that party is getting smaller every day.

Same here. My reasons were mostly rooted in rivalry, especially the year he won the Heisman, when many of us felt Deshaun deserved it instead. But, he’s definitely having himself a year.

Lamar's who I was going to pick. I'm really impressed with how he's turned out in the NFL, and I've read that he's really active in the community outside of the NFL.

I would guess that 99.9% of us would have predicted

Jan 13, 2025, 8:47 AM [ in reply to Not a true hate but I respect Lamar Jackson as ]

That Deshaun would have smoked Jackson, NFL-career wise, but here we are.

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would be among those with DW having better career

Jan 13, 2025, 9:23 AM

But Jackson has easily taken that over. He does seem like a really good guy and has put up numbers this year that have never been seen before.

DW just fell off the map with ACL problems throughout and of course off the field issues have severely impacted his life.

I thought he was all mouth after the first CFP semi, and he does have some swagger, but to me he has that intangible quality of finding a way to win, or at least giving it all he’s got. Reminds me of (dang it) Conner Shaw - just a baller.

Athlete I hated most. That's easy....Neon Deion Sanders. The most narcissistic, egomaniacal man I ever watched play and game. Probably one of the top 3 most gifted athletes of our time. All about Me is his mantra to this day. So far, I have not learned to like him but I am trying. Maybe someday.

The insurance and Heisman House ads definitely helped Mayfield's image. Even knowing it's just scripted, how can you not like someone you've seen fill a trick-or-treat pumpkin with nachos ?!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tom Brady

Jan 13, 2025, 7:28 AM

When he was with the Patriots I despised him. I thought he was arrogant with his success.

But when he went to the Buccaneers he just didn't have that same look like he was back in NE.

Then he went on to play with Peyton Manning, Tiger Woods (we won't go into how I feel about him) and Phil Mickelson in a golf match on TV during the pandemic. Actually turned out he was down to earth.

Not an athlete but I could say the same about Nick Saban. At Alabama I couldn't stand him. But the past few months I have seen the other side of him outside of coaching. In my opinion he is another that is a decent, down to earth man that really is a hard working, knows what he wants from his players and demands respect out of them. But will help anyone who needs it.

Everyone may not agree but I guess it just shows if you see someone in one aspect being only on a Sunday or Saturday during a game on TV, it doesn't mean outside of that one aspect they can't be a completely different person from what you think they are.

Jameis Winston for sure. I hated him at FSU but realized he was just an immature kid and has grown a lot in the last decade. He puts his faith and his family above everything else and I find his quirky sense of humor to be quite charming and he is just so easy to root for now.
