article on usc recruiting

Feb 9, 2017, 1:27 PM

from SEC today site, written by some guy named mike wilson. Guess we are doomed. on the other hand, not sure shi smith and brad johnson were 'takes' for us.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As South Carolina football continues to build its way back up, the Gamecocks have looked to do so by recruiting South Carolina football players.

Will Muschamp and Co. placed a premium on recruiting from within the state from the day he was hired in Dec. 2015. That focus was evident when the Gamecocks signed their 2017 class last week, as the Gamecocks signed the state’s top three recruits and 6 of the top 8, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“These are all guys we’re very familiar with,” Muschamp said. “We had them in camp. We worked them out. We’ve built a great relationship with them and we’re excited about them being here. They’re not anybody that we’re falling back on. These are guys we offered early in the process that we knew were important for us moving forward with our program.”

South Carolina signed 11 players from the Palmetto State in 2017, making up almost half of its 24-person recruiting class. Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando wide receiver OrTre Smith was the state’s top-ranked player and he signed with the Gamecocks, as did second-ranked Shi Smith (Union wide receiver) and third-ranked Brad Johnson (Pendleton defensive end). All three picked the Gamecocks over impressive offer lists, including Clemson.

When it comes to the view of in-state recruiting, Muschamp extends the recruiting map beyond geography.

The South Carolina coach said on signing day that he considers recruiting North Carolina to be recruiting in-state “because of the proximity to Charlotte.” The Gamecocks signed three from North Carolina in 2017, offensive lineman Eric Douglas, linebacker Sherrod Green and safety Jaylin Dickerson, who already is on campus and Muschamp said “can help us immediately.”

The Gamecocks also hit Georgia hard, signing six players from Georgia, including their top-ranked signee Jamyest Williams. But while hitting the nearby region – USC signed 20 of 24 players within a 5-hour driving radius – it comes back to keeping the top players from the state in the state to play college football.

Muschamp said he wanted to do that and he made good on it in the 2017 class.

“Well, I think that this state has really good players and really good coaching,” Muschamp said.

I love South Carolina but the best players in the nation are usually not from here. Now that being said we have had some great players come from this state. The reason most of their players come from a 5 hour radius is because they cannot get kids from further away. That is about as far as their brand goes.

Watch where the top Palmetto State recruits go in 2018 when

Feb 9, 2017, 1:53 PM

the best guys from in-state also happen to be some of the best in the nation.

For me, OrTre Smith is probably the only guy in the 2017 SCAR recruiting class that we might have "missed" out on and that was purely a matter of numbers.

I agree. They do not realize that sometimes in state recruiting is not good recruiting.

Smith would have been moved to TE if he came here..

In other words this recruiting cycle we had a smaller class because of scholarship numbers(like Dabo says we don't run players off) and the guys we signed were higher rated than the instate players scu got.

i wonder, does the boom bus only have a 5 hour radius?

Should've gone with the bigger gas tank.

Maybe it's battery powered and they have to turn it around

If you look at USuCk's brief window of prominence it coincided

Feb 9, 2017, 3:24 PM [ in reply to Re: article on usc recruiting ]

with an unusual level of instate talent. Stephon Gilmore, Doo Doo Clowney, Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffrey, Devin Taylor, Bruce Ellington, DJ Swearinger, etc. were all in-state guys.

When SC has good home-grown talent, USuCk improves, they're never going to consistently go into FL and GA or anywhere else and pull out the top rated guys so they live and die by the local crop.

Unfortunately, with guys like Joyner and Xavier Thomas coming down the pike with a realistic chance of heading to Columbia, they could see another bump in the next few years.

Nobody should ever be worried about how good mudshrimp recruits. He'll never get better talent than he got at Florida and he went 28-21 while there. If he got three 5* every year he's still not gonna win there.

They are so pathetic

Doesn't matter

Clemson got who we wanted with the exception of an RB switch up which was driven by academic qualifications. We still ended up with a phenomenal RB in LSU's back yard. When you factor in the academic oddities we probably ended up with a better player. The coots would NEVER be able to pull that off.

Otre was scared of the elite WR competition at Clemson. As soon as Higgins committed to us Otre was a coot.

They are more than welcome to have the 3* players in the state, we will take the 4's and 5's from here to Texas.

I think the most accurate thing to say about Usuc recruiting would be: USC is having an awesome year of taking away recruits from non power 5 conference schools.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's hoping they all qualify, stick around 4-5 years,
