Another reason why we looked so bad offensively

I’ve mentioned this before, but we have no diversity at WR. Just look at our top 4 guys: Ross, Ngata, Ladson, and EJ. They are all the same type of WR. Big bodied, vertical threats, that often win 50/50 balls.
Our offense is desperately missing that Sammy Watkins, Artavis Scott, Ray Ray McCloud, and Amari Rodgers type WR in the boundary. We don’t have that sudden change of quickness guy that can take jet sweeps or catch screens.
We are also missing a true slot WR. We don’t have a guy like Hunter Renfrow. We don’t have that type WR that you can go to in the short and intermediate passing game. We don’t have that guy that can get immediate separation.
We don’t have WRs that we can throw a quick screen to. We don’t have WRs that we can create quick separation with their route running and lateral quickness. We only have 6’4 WRs that can stretch the field. But that doesn’t work with an offensive line that can’t hold up long enough in pass pro.
We are asking Ladson to be Sammy, Artavis, Ray Ray, and Amari. We are asking Ross to be Humphries, Renfrow, and Amari.
That’s not going to work against elite defenses.

Look at the best WRs in the NFL right now
Nuk: 6’1, 4.5 speed Tyreke Hill: 5’10, 4.2 speed Adams: 6’1, 4.5 speed Diggs: 6’0, 4.4 speed
The next wave of WRs in the NFL
Jefferson: 6’1, 4.4 speed Ridley: 6’1, 4.4 speed Godwin: 6’1, 4.4 speed McLaurin: 6’0, 4.3 speed Ruggs: 4.2 speed
Just look at the last couple of drafts.
Chase, 5th overall: 6’0, 4.3 speed Waddle, 6th overall: 5’10, 4.3 speed Smith, 10th overall: 6’0, excellent route runner Toney, 20th overall: 6’0, 4.3 speed
Ruggs, 12th overall: 5’10, 4.2 speed Jeudy, 15th overall: 6’1, excellent route runner CeeDee, 17th overall; 6’2, excellent route runner Reagor, 21st overall: 5’11, excellent route runner Jefferson, 22nd overall: 6’1, excellent route runner
I feel like I’m going insane watching us recruit the same WRs every year. Do you not see the direction football is going? Defenses have gotten so much faster. You have to match that by getting faster as well. Or getting guys that can create separation with lateral quickness and elite route running. Asking 6’4, 215 pound WRs that run a 4.5 to create separation on a slant is really dumb.

It sounds like ur arguing that we need smaller WRs that are really fast and good route runners.

If I was the HC, with all the talent that we have at RB, Shipley would be lining up in the slot!!!

The answer is to start recruiting more diversity at WR
2022: Adam Randall (6’3), maybe Andre Greene (6’3) 2021: Beaux (6’3), Dacari (6’4), Stellato (slot) 2020: EJ (6’3), Ajou (6’3) 2019: Ladson (6’3), Ngata (6’3), Spector (slot) 2018: Ross (6’4)
Where are the 4.3 guys that are deadly in the screen/quick passing game? We have none. All we have are tall, vertical threats and two slot WRs that aren’t going to play a lot.

Yep, and as I've already said, Shipley should be that guy. He has speed, and he can catch the ball and run through most tackles!!!

Asking Shipley to line up in the slot, a position he’s never played, against elite defenses is a terrible way to fix this problem. Our recruiting philosophy simply has to change.
I see that the coaches are targeting Nathaniel Joseph (5’9, extremely fast WR) for 2023. We need more of those types at WR.

It seems there was no separation by the receivers. There were a few times two receivers would be in the same area which is never a good thing.

None of our WRs are dudes that can create immediate separation. That’s my entire point. They are too big. They don’t complement each other well.

There were all sorts of issues you are pointing out one pertaining to WRs, most people are pointing to the OL, DJ's pocket presence was bad as well.
Most are pointing to Caldwell as a problem, and that may be true, but I think the OC is the main issue here. I hate to say it, but we have been slowly deteriorating on offense but it was masked by Lawrence and Etienne.
As much as our fan base doesn't like Morris (which I still don't understand), I'd have him on line one. He has forgotten more about offense then Scott or Elliott every knew.

That the Tigers need to find another tight end like Leggett. Another Renfro has been needed ever since he left! Legget was responsible for one of our national championship. He made a lot of plays when they HAD to be made. Obviously the coaches don’t think as much of Shipley as some of us fans do. I really thought he would be the key player in a win last night for the Tigers. Instead he rarely got into the game. Where was he on the shirt yardage plays in the end zone? This loss is on the coaches.

Correct, multiple duplication of size & skill set for the wr pos group, none with short area quickness (I'm not convinced any are feared as a true deep threat, I know some were touted as having elite speed, speed is sometimes exaggerated coming out of high school, I have some doubts until I see it in a game or come across some verified laser times-view them more as long, possession style receivers)

Ladson definitely runs a 4.4
Ross, Ngata, EJ, and Ajou all look like 4.5 guys
And I’m sure all have the ability to be really good in the NFL. But it just doesn’t work having all of them on the field at the same time. Nuk had Sammy. Sammy had Martavis and Humprhies. Mike had Artavis and Renfrow. Deon had Renfrow and Ray Ray. Tee had Renfrow and Amari. That diversity no longer exists.

Stellato and Taylor fit that mold. Both are true freshman though.
