An election fix for the two-party stranglehold?

Read an interesting piece in the latest TIME last night that argued for a switch to proportional voting for Congress. The article claimed that 90 percent of Americans live in a place that's already locked down by either the GOP or the Dems when it comes to Congressional districts. So if you're a Pub in New York, you're screwed, and if you're a Dem out in the country, you're screwed. America is starkly divided politically by where people live.
This change would award representatives based on the proportion of the votes. So, let's say in SC (I know we have 7 reps but let's pretend we have 8 for easier math) we hypothetically are split 50/50 in the vote (of course, we wouldn't be, but hypothetically). That would open up for four Pubs and four Dems to be the reps. If the vote were 60/40 in favor of Pubs, then we would have five Pub reps and three Dems.
The though behind this practice is that it would eliminate any need for gerrymandering. And that it would now give a Dem living out in Gaffney more representation as well as a Pub living in Boston or Los Angeles.
Thoughts?

I'd have to create a spreadsheet and attempt to identify unintended consequences of the voting/numbers part. Sounds like something to consider, but would need to find edge cases that may not make sense.
Then, what are the second-order effects? Has this system been used in other places? How did it work out for them? I'd be concerned about how such a system could be manipulated in ways that we have not thought about.

That would be even less representative than what we have today.

And while no democracy can ever be a just government, that would be even worse.
The whole idea behind a democratic republic was to give the people a representative from their peers that could represent them in the house. Proportional voting completely strips that away and turns your representative into just the top of the popular people in your state.

Yeah, it's called "representative democracy."
The horror.

To the cities. Ok. Which just happen to vote dem by a huge margin.
It would eliminate any representation in non cities by a lot.
It would always favor the Dems. Even in Cali most likely

Especially beneficial for the Pubs living in those cities.

I don't understand how it helps two-party stranglehold.

Your solution, as described, does not increase the prominence of other political parties.

It gives more voice to people...

Who have chosen to live in a certain area that is overwhelmingly surrounded by people of a different political affiliation. It also hurts the gerrymandering efforts. America is quite possibly more divided geographically than ever by politics. It also gives more voice to independents in those areas as well.
If you're a Pub living in Boston or just Massachusetts in general, you have little voice where you live due to the sheer numbers. Proportional voting would give you and other Pubs in those areas at least one person in Congress to represent your ideology instead of constantly having a Dem.

I guess I disagree with the premise.

I believe everyone where I live has the same voice, no matter their political persuasion. They have the same ability to vote, the same ability to influence their representatives. Whether the one I vote for agree with is my representative is not a factor in whether I have a voice.
