That most of us wouldn’t visually recognize even 5% of them if we passed them at the Mall or on a street 5 feet away from us.
It is interesting..the fixation and time spent commenting on & following young student athletes that as a whole represent a TEAM we follow..mostly the Football Team for many of us, yet we as fans have never met 99% of them nor would we recognize 90% of them in public.
Think that is odd, try recognizing members of the 1981 Natty FB team today!
Ha..life’s passion for sports and it’s players is one for the head shrinks..and Sunday it will be in full force again with the Super Bowl where 90% of its players could not be recognized by 90% of its watchers in person especially without their uni numbers.

But the new audience will recognize Taylor Swift. They nothing about football, who the players are or the teams that are playing the Super Bowl. But they will sit and watch 3.5 to 4 hours of football to see Taylor Swift.
I have a lady friend who cares nothing about football but watches every Chiefs game to see Taylor Swift.

We pull for "The Team" and institution! I could remember a high percentage of the individual players, by name, through the years, but you are correct, would not recognize them if I walked by them in a mall!!

Sports are fun to watch at such a high level. It's pretty simple why people want to watch. There is so much passion involved too.

Football is much harder, you hardly see their face. I could recognize Victor Lahkin from a mile away but wouldn’t recognize for example Ashton Hampton. Definitely weird though…didn’t even get used to what Etienne looked like until the combine when nobody wears helmets.

What's there to figure out. People are watching for the teams and the cities they represent, plus the amazing talent and entertainment great athletes provide. I don't think most people feel the need to be friends with them at the "mall". Most people probably want to give them their privacy.
