Am I spoiled as a Clemson fan?

35

Apr 29, 2023, 1:25 AM

As a long-time Clemson football fan, I have been through many ups and downs with the team. I started watching Clemson games in the 1970s, when the team struggled to find consistent success. But in recent years, the team has been on a roll, winning national championships and dominating their opponents. As I reflect on this period of success, I can't help but wonder if I am spoiled as a Clemson fan.

Between 2015 and 2018, Clemson won two national championships and played in the College Football Playoff in each of those years. They had a remarkable 55-4 record during that period, with many thrilling victories and memorable moments. As a fan, it was an incredible time to be a part of the Clemson community. But now, as the team faces new challenges and rebuilding efforts, I find myself asking if I am too used to this level of success.

Part of being a fan is embracing the ups and downs of the team, and not just the victories. It's about supporting the team through thick and thin, whether they are winning or losing. As a Clemson fan, I have seen the team struggle and bounce back time and time again, and I know that the current rebuilding phase is just another part of the team's journey.

But at the same time, it's hard not to compare the team's current state to the success of the recent past. It's natural to feel spoiled when you have experienced such a high level of success, but I know that the team and the coaches are working hard to continue that success and build for the future.

As a fan, I will continue to support the team and enjoy the victories, but also appreciate the challenges and the learning opportunities that come with rebuilding. I don't feel like I am spoiled as a Clemson fan, but I am grateful for the memories and the experiences that the team has given me over the years. Here's to another exciting season of Clemson football, no matter what the future holds.

Very nice.

I’ve followed this site since it started. Dial up with my grad school prof’s secret internet access number…the early/mid 90’s… Not participating, just selfishly enjoying the banter an updates from afar (Clemson to Atlanta to Oregon now).

My family has been in and around Clemson since the late 1930’s. It’s in the blood.

Have to say that I appreciate this post more than most. Perspective is a treasure. Thanks.

Go Tigers!

After fifty years of Clemson football, winning streaks seem to be cyclical. I remember Red Parker as a kid but I can’t seem to remember Hootie Ingram? Those were rough days. However, this current run is pretty great and it’s not over yet. Win, lose or draw, I love Clemson.

The pain is the worst and best part… it shows our love and investment in the program, we are members of the family, I felt we could contend back in the early days and a blind naive pup. The hurt of losing to BC by a missed extra point, CJ having 20,000 all purpose yards bs GT in the ACC championship game and still losing because of a special teams fake for a TD (when Bama did it in 15 I had horrible deja vu).

Point being, I am grateful for the success I never thought I would see… ever (I was born in 84). My dad played in the 60’s and 70’s…. Clemson football is in my blood and I love that I love our program so much. I love that I feel the losses more than the wins. You are not spoiled, you just paid your dues and have some PTSD on years past. Just telemetry that these “down” years are things we would have killed for not all that long ago. I hurt the same now with a loss as I did 20 years ago, I always believed we could win a championship and that’s part of being a fan, blind optimism. You are not spoiled, you just feel the things we’ve all, always felt… our program has just been more successful.
Don’t feel bad for being normal.we’ve had these expectations for long before the recent success did you are anything like me. Luckily now a bad year is 10-3,11-3…. We are all lucky and don’t forget it.

I started being a Clemson fan 8 years before you, and no we're not spoiled, we're deserving bc we believed in our Tigers way back then, and we stuck it out waiting for the good times to come. That has nothing to do with being spoiled, it's being loyal, and we're just enjoying the fruits for our loyalty!!!

A huge number of the younger Tiger fans would have never stuck it out with Clemson with the number of ups and downs we've been through as a long time Tiger. You, me, and many more like us deserve the Clemson we're enjoying now!!!

I would hope the younger tigers would stick it out. I too have been a Clemson fan since the 1970s and graduated in 86. There have been ups and downs for sure, but I never wavered in my support. I got mad as heck at times but never abandoned my team amd my school.

Great post. I started going to games in the 60's but as a young boy and then teenager, winning was not part of the equation. I went to games back then because it was fun. When my wife and I married in 74, we got season tickets but again, winning was not the thing until Coach Pell came in the late 70's and things changed. When our children were born and started going to games with us it was all about family especially the great memories when they were students at Clemson and we never knew how many of their friends would show up for tailgate. We went to bowl after bowl, Championship in Miami, beating Switzer and Paterno and of course Disney. Clemson football was family and fun.

When we signed CJ, everything changed. At the time DW4 signed, we had no idea what the future would be and then Trevor and ETN topped it off. The truth is it takes a ton of talent and a ton of luck to put everything together to win a Championship. We have been there 3 times which is far more more than most schools.

The ride has been great, but winning another Championship is not something I lose sleep over because I know how hard it is. I will support every Clemson team to the day I die but just because we have won before does not mean we will ever have all the pieces fit again. The fun now is in winning but now that I am in my 70's, I realize there are many other programs that win. If we can just stay in the conversation, that is good enough for me and maybe, just maybe, we will sign the pieces again and the injuries will be few and we win another title.

All CCC fans are spoiled...for many years we had nothing...small school, no national spotlight...they had to pipe in light...out of the blue we win a natty with Danny but we were not ready for that! A series of dismal coaches and we luck out and get Dabo...we were a little more prepared and Dabo was ready...he made some great hires (Chad & others) and we were off and running...we are still despised by the Marxist media but we are stuck in their craw for good!

You are definitely not spoiled. Being a fan is a LOT more than wins and loses. Real fans follow their teams and coaches thru the good times and the bad. Fans who only support teams that are winning are imposters. It also says something about the individuals,!!!

PSEUDO FANS are a dime a dozen. Tune in to Tigernet and you find several. Most have never even been to Clemson, bought a ticket or done anything to help the university succeed.

I saw my first game in 1960 and I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve returned to support these teams. I’ll be there is section US this year too sixty plus years after that first game in the old west end zone. The first was a great game, loud and passionate. This one will be even better. I saw my first game against Duke and so will the next one. Wish I was 19 again!

Go Tigers.

Are we spoiled as Clemson fans? I won’t attempt to speak for anyone else, but my view for myself is YES, I’m spoiled. I know a couple of things for sure.
1 - Every time I set foot in Clemson, I’m happy and excited.
2 - Having been on campus at dozens of other schools from coast to coast, I know that I feel next to nothing anywhere else. Mostly, I just want to see a Clemson team pound somebody and then leave.
3 - I am shocked every time by how much I hate losing. I might walk around in a funk for a week or more.
4 - I am shocked every time by how much I like winning. It’s childish and ridiculous, but it’s also true.

I don't want to get into the whole alumni vs nonalumni deal,

4

Apr 29, 2023, 9:40 AM

but as a former Clemson student and graduate, I think that gives you more of a love of the TOTALITY of Clemson athletics, not just football. Now, I understand this is no longer the case, but back in the Jurassic Era when I matriculated at Clemson, students got tickets to all sporting events free as part of their tuition. And, a great portion of us attended many games in many different sports. Death Valley, Littlejohn, Beautiful Tiger Field, watched them all, as many as I could. Heck, I even attended soccer games and a few tennis matches, as we were highly rated in both at the time. Attending sporting events was a huge part of my college experience.

But football? You got drawn in by the pageantry and the big crowd excitement, because let's face it, on the field, we were just not very good for most of my time there (1972-76). If there was a REALLY good team on the field, it was usually the visiting one. That didn't stop us students from showing up in droves, and cheering loud and long for our Tigers, regardless of the outcome. I cringe when I hear "fans" nowadays boo our team for any lack of success. THAT is being spoiled.

Now, I said all that to say this, which is hard to make not sound like one of those "I walked 5 miles to school in the snow, uphill both ways" stories. I think that having had the on campus experience, with all the highs and lows, "living and dying" with the success or lack of from the various teams, gives you a different perspective, and you will NEVER become spoiled by success. Because, you already know in advance that it is fleeting, and the other side will eventually come around again. So, you just enjoy it all the more while it is here.

Maybe spoiled isn't the correct

Apr 29, 2023, 10:37 AM

But it seems some people lack on perspective and anunderstanding of what's truly happening on a football field. Someone can be a huge fan and graduate and still difference. Nothing wrong with that as long as said people understand, having a lack of knowledge about the game is directly tied to the credibility of that opinion. Everyone has an opinion but the fiundation pf that opinion starts with having true knowledge, and that even means something like saying "the wrs sucked because i 'saw' it with my own eyes. Well, what you really saw was a lot of bad reads and thst incoudes no reads at all combined with low throwing accuracy beyond 10 yards. So no, there weren't many flashy explosive plays, but that had very very little to do with there not being open receivers or players capable of catching passes.

Nothing vwrong with that as long as everyone understands the difference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Respectfully, that's not what I saw.

May 1, 2023, 2:43 PM

Over the past two season, I have seen lackadaisical blocking (last season was a bit better but still not strong), covered receivers and dropped passes. Just really underwhelming, relative to what we have seen over the previous five or six years.

To be sure, we had some really frustrating QB play, but the WRs have earned some fan frustration.

I feel the same as I always have. Like when Danny Ford led our team to a NC win, I always felt we would reach that pinnacle sooner or later bc that was the height I always for my Clemson Tigers even though I believed that Danny would do it again, and then that bubble popped when he was forced out.

Then when Dabo was hired, I read everything I could find about our new HC, and everything I read told the story of how driven Dabo was at succeeding in everything he done, and I had that gut feeling that Dabo would win a NC at Clemson as he has done X two, and he will do it again before he is done at Clemson, and I believe that.

Good comment.

I kind of share this. I'm grateful for the success and try not to expect perfection every year. Between DJU and the coaching transition things were a bit shakey, and it will be good to see what happens this year.

I think was bothers me (beyond our troubles being self-inflicted) is the sense that the team is no longer in a position to go toe-to-toe with Alabama (or Georgia). The great thing about the playoff stretch was that you knew we were the equal of elite programs. It is hard to look at this team the last two years and think that it was at that level, relative to the competition. And it wasn't just about the QB position.

2

Clemson fans are absolutely spoiled these days. It is absolutely irrational to expect the run that we had to last forever. But that's normal for all programs. Human nature is human nature.

But then to be mad at coaches after a season we win the ACC and got 11 wins? Total lack of perspective. I get it if we are disappointed that we didn't do better.... but any animosity or attacks on Dabo, after everything he has done, is a sign of an emotionally unhealthy person.

People use the excuse "well Dabo set the expectations" but all that is saying is "Well I may be a spoiled baby, but Dabo MADE me a spoiled baby by doing well and speaking about his standard." That's PATHETIC. A grown man should keep his own perspective and not DEPEND on a football coach to say what he needs to hear to be reasonable.

Agree with your post totally. We won the ACC

The college scene has totally changed with portal and NIL. Clemson never paid for players like the SEC and other leagues are doing. Yet we continue to have great years
