Alumni >> Students >>>>>>> random fans

Nov 20, 2014, 8:31 PM

Sorry it's just the truth.

We care about the whole school. Not just the football team and basketball team.

It's just a different level.

Random fans might love the football team but it's not the same.

Oh yeah I'm an alumni and Cole sucks at football.

Might be a great guy but he's not good at football.

I'm a 40 year old 3rd generation alum on my mom's side and 2nd on the my dad's with multiple others and even a few Clemson professors in my close family on both sides... I don't personally see anything wrong with folks without a Clemson education being Tiger sports fans but it is definitely not the same as being and alum. One cares about sports first and the other about the school and the significance of their education. I have often heard the older alums in my family point out that there's an vocal element to the football fan base that doesn't represent the university well and that they sometimes wish we didn't have to share the same logo with those folks. I've even been told that the worst thing that ever happened to Clemson University was winning a national championship in football. The logic being that before that the brand was about the education and alum and up until then you could just go to the games and enjoy supporting the school without having to worry about the expectations and complaints of the football fans who didn't care about the image or significance of a Clemson degree... As a broad generalization, I am convinced that there's a certain standard of behavior expected by the more mature alum where Clemson is concerned. While this kind of behavior is not necessarily exclusive to an alum, one would hope that demonstrating anything else would be a clear tell that someone probably is not.

shows that there a "vocal element" of the alums that makes the sports fans not want to share a logo with you. Lucky for our beloved university, those elements from both sides are few and far between. I wanted to go to Clemson, but was not able to. My spouse is in the same situation. We did, however send our son and now hopefully, a few of the grands. We've supported the entire university, not just IPTAY for years. I still have hope that when I retire, I'll move to the upstate and take some classes at Clemson. Former students are alums, so then I'll be one of the special people.

Nov 20, 2014, 9:24 PM

constitutes a random fan?

You forgot out-of-state alum & students...

Nov 20, 2014, 9:32 PM

Since we paid more for our Clemson degrees we obviously care more about the University, so we should be at the top of the Who-Loves-Clemson-Most Pyramid.

Honestly this is just stupid. You're making alum look bad with this nonsense.

Ok. I can't be a fan anymore

This is assinine! We are a relatively small school with a small alumni base compared to most schools in this country. Anyone that thinks for one second we are not a better university because of our support from many people that never attended Clemson. I am honored and proud to be an alumnus but I am also grateful and appreciative for all fans that love and support this University. Dear God, these threads are making us look like arrogant buttholes like UNCheat or Syracuse. Enough already!

only care about football. I am one of your random fans and I care about everything Clemson. I appreciate the beautiful campus, the reputation of Clemson, academics... EVERYTHING!!! I care about every sport at the school. I care about the people that are there and the people that attended Clemson...well, most of them.

I may not have attended Clemson, but I have given my fair share to Clemson, although not monetary, but in ways that have helped others that did attend the University. I have helped direct young people to attend Clemson.

So, sorry, it is NOT the truth.

Yep there are plenty of "fans" who only care about football.

During basketball season they show up wearing Tar Heel blue.

as I said I call about the reputation of Clemson. It is not like they are UNC. I care and pray that ALL students that attend Clemson get the best education possible and show the world what Clemson grads can contribute to the sad world.

Plus, why would you care what I think??? You do remember that you lost a bet to never come back on TigerNet...well at least under assof09. I guess you lied, huh?

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

I protest the use of 'random,' when referring to my brothers

Nov 21, 2014, 12:15 AM

I think you might have avoided being so offensive had you used the term 'bandwagon,' instead of random.

I think years of service to Clemson may constitute some sort of a pecking order but past that no one has a frame of reference to understand another's perspective. It's like me proclaiming that 'I love sex more than you.' IMO, the alum fan who has been a fan 7 years may not indeed be a greater fan than perhaps my 26 yr old son who was born my Jr year at Clemson. He's also a Sr at Clemson this year.

I'm not sure that length of 'service,' for a Clemson fan make one more a fan than another but it surely shows experience which seem to matter in every other walk in life.

I think you should pay crump the donor's fee and revise your post. Take random out of that context. Tnet has some bandwagoners and probably some random fans too. What you've done is insult the faithful Clemson fans by eliminating them from grads and students which places them with the bandwagoners. Brother, that's not right. These non alums are just as passionate about Clemson Sports day in and day out, year in and year out and decade in and decade out as any student on campus and possibly as much as alums. I can't say, you can't say and they can't say either. We're all just guessing after three or four decades.

Thanks
Dan

That is the dumbest comment I have ever heard. What are you in the 3rd grade? I didn't go to Clemson because I couldn't afford the out of state tuition. Both of my parents went to Clemson and I have been a fan since I can remember at the ripe age of 3.

This whole "I am better than you because I'm an alumn thing" is utterly ridiculous. Why dont we embrace each other because we have one thing in common. WE ARE ALL CLEMSON FANS. Screw you for talking down to me because I didn't attend Clemson.

Re: Alumni >> Students >>>>>>> random fans

Nov 21, 2014, 11:53 AM

What a horrible way to look at things. While it's true that students probably care more about non-football things, the non-alumni that you just insulted are the reason that Clemson has such a great fanbase. As a lifelong GT fan and Clemson grad, I can tell you firsthand that what differentiates the two fanbases is the huge number of dedicated sidewalk fans that Clemson has. GT alumni are every bit as passionate as Clemson alumni and very similar, from what I've seen. The big difference is that Clemson has thousands more so called sidewalk fans, which is why Clemson's stadium fills up and has the exciting reputation that it does.

So what if they don't care about the academic wing. Who cares? They support the football program, which indirectly boosts the national profile of the whole school. Be thankful for that.

Re: Alumni >> Students >>>>>>> random fans

Nov 21, 2014, 12:41 PM

I am an alum... and have to disagree. My father did not go to Clemson, but he went to a small, private school in Virginia. My mom and dad dated long distance while she attended Clemson. My dad loves Clemson more than some graduates. He has been a heavy donor for 15 years, he attends every home game and a majority of away/bowl games, and he even moved to Seneca to be in closer proximity to the school. He has sent 3 sons to Clemson. His blood bleeds orange regardless of his attendance there. It is not fair to discriminate against non-alums when there are plenty of people in Death Valley who are passionate and proud representations of Clemson who may not have gone there. I obviously have an issue with non-educated "homers" who simply root for Clemson because they chose to pull for the tigers... I have met plenty of people who I thought had no business pulling for clemson, but you can't make a blanket statement about non alums. Let's not be elitist. Plenty of Clemson fans have given significant investments of money, time, joy, and heartbreak pulling for Clemson over the years. It is inappropriate to discount their contribution to the Clemson Family.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now that we have established that fact

Nov 21, 2014, 12:48 PM

Sorry, but not the true. My family has been involved with the school since my grand father played in 1903-04 during the Heisman days. My father and sister also graduated from Clemson. I didnt attend Clemson however I guarantee you I care about this school as much as you if not more than you.
