Anyone on here own an Airstream? Thinking about buying one, haven't had a camper before, but looks like a fun adventure. Thoughts and experiences appreciated.

Haven't owned an Airstream, but have owned several campers

(to include 3 motorhomes). You get what you pay for in these things. Are you camping in hot and cold weather? Look for something that's very well insulated ($$$$) and has a very good heat/air units ($$$$$) on the roof. The roof material ($$$$) is VERY important because of water leakage and insulation (see above).

Not sure what your plans are, but there are SEVERAL factors involved.

My "camping" life: started with a tent, moved up to a pop-up camper, moved "up" to the motorhomes (3) and back down to a 20 ft tow behind camper (my favorite). Tow behind was so much easier setting up, tearing down and maintaining. Just have to have a vehicle to tow it.

Buddy of mine bought an RV (motorhome) to tailgate in. He asked me for advice. I told him, with a straight face, to SELL IT! He laughed and I told him I was serious. He sold it after 1 season of tailgating.

HTH.

Thanks for the insight. I used to do quite a bit of tent camping, but have reached a point in my life that I'd like a bit more comfort, and think the family will be up for it more if we have a camper.

I'm looking right at that 20' tow-behind camper that you reference. I already have a tow-capable vehicle, and I figure I can just hitch it up and go. I'm trying to find one that will minimize maintenance stress and leaks, hence airstream being my first consideration.

Any experience with single vs dual axle? Anything else I should be looking out for?

TIA.

You want dual axle. If 1 tire blows while pulling a single axle, good luck. You’ll have more control with a 2axle blowout. I’ve also heard double axles are more stable at a campsite.

We have a double axle Winnebago and love it. We were camper newbies not long ago. The SC state park system has lots of beautiful places to camp.

Makes a lot of sense, thank you, hadn't thought about the blow-out situation. I just figured single would be easier to maintain and reverse, but a blowout would be trouble!

Looking forward to seeing much more of the state this way, planning to utilize the state parks. Thanks for the info.

I wonder if that extends to Class B

Was looking at the “coaches” by Airstream thanks to this thread and wondered if the Interstate and Atlas types would be something you would avoid. Not really considering due to costs, but I immediately thought of the larger guys when I first read this.

I am wanting a small one but can’t afford the coin on one right now. Will be what I get when I do decide to pull the trigger.

What are you looking at?

I started by looking at the Caravel 16, but the 22 is about the same price after discounts. But if I want a dual axle, which I'm now thinking I do, the Flying Cloud 23 looks pretty ideal.

If u can swing it, Airstream Flying Cloud is top notch. It’s on our wish list. Make sure you’ve got enough truck to pull one. And beware of the salesmen - all they want is for u to pull it off the lot. Good luck with your search and hopefully purchase. You gotta go to Mile Creek, Oconee SP, Devils Fork, Sadler Creek SP. Lots of great places around Clemson to camp for a weekend football game!

Make sure you store it indoors or under a covered area when not using regardless of what style of camper you get.

My advice would be to start small and used and work your way up. It takes longer, but you will know what you are doing by the time you start looking at spending real money. Of course, this only works if you have an understanding wife. :0)
