New Story: No room for error: Tigers need to be perfect against Wake Forest

No room for error: Tigers need to be perfect against Wake Forest

Jeff Scott knows the old expressions that hindsight is 20/20. He also knows that when the room for error is small, you had better make sure you are perfect in your execution. The Tigers weren’t perfect last Saturday against Pitt – turning the ball over three times and failing to convert twice in a short-yardage situation late in the game – and it cost them the game. Starting to sound a little soft

Nov 17, 2016, 9:10 AM

We let a .500 team come into Death Valley, score 43 points and if the films only shows 5 bad plays then I suggest watching it again.

And again.
And again.

Come on Jeff

Nov 17, 2016, 9:20 AM

What does how many points a .500 team scored have to do with how WE did OFFENSIVELY?

There were plenty of "not good" plays on both side of the ball, but Scott was just talking about 5 really bad OFFENSIVE plays...

Those 5 plays go differently, it's easily a 30 point swing!

We are a better and more talented team than Pittsburgh ever thought about being. That's the biggest thing that should stick in the craw of all our team and coaches. Pittsburgh had no business even being close to us, but they were on that day. Not only were they close, they won the game. Granted, huge advantage went to them in the bogus penalties they benefited from, but it never should have come down to that. We have to learn to have the killer instinct it takes to be champions. We must go for the jugular early and often, and never look back or worry about running up the score or hurting a coach's feelings by stomping a mudhole in their Pittsburgh. Do that every game, and we don't lose to a Pittsburgh team. Being concerned about feelings leaves us with nail biters and disappointments, like last Saturday.

I can appreciate being positive. But there is only one statistic that matters it is to the left of the-

I would rather see a poor performance and a win

Beg to differ. Trying to be perfect just creates more pressure and stifles athleticism. It's time that the coaches called these guys out. What are they made of? Too much hype, showing off, resting on laurels they have not earned. Lucky wins don't scare anybody. Who fears this team? Anyone? Think Wake is scared? Nope. They think they can knock us off. They are looking forward to this. Tigers better get MAD and get PHYSICAL and go up there and DOMINATE. I bet WF doesn't have one 4 star recruit in the entire team. Dabo says he knows what this team is made of. I think all Tiger fans would like to see the team that thumped Syracuse and BC and GT back out there.

Disagree coach

Nov 17, 2016, 10:29 AM

Up by 8 with 5:30 to play, ball on the three yard line. What do we do? Call a pass play??!! Just dumb. Run the ball up the middle, run off clock, score 6 or 3 and put the game out of reach expect for crazy heroics or luck. That is totally on Jeff, Tony and Dabo.

On the 3rd and 4th down plays, there is not one person that knows and follows this team who would have called those two running plays. There may have been consensus among the coaches with those two calls but I'm not sure what game they were watching. We had 50 yards rushing all day, Gallman barely got in from the one yard line with the heavy package, again to the left side.

Very disappointed that our coaching staff hasn't owned these mind numbing mistakes. This loss should rest entirely on their shoulders, not DW's.

Doesn't mean they should be fired but game management is at times baffling. Sure hope they learn from this brain fart.

Exactly as well as Deshaun played he couldn't over come the poor play-calling. Then you run a cold Wayne two times in a row, the exact same play two times in a row. Extremely poor. Hope they learn from it but we've been making the same mistakes all year. So guess it takes them some time to learn.

Agree for the most part

Nov 17, 2016, 10:49 AM [ in reply to Disagree coach ]

Though I understand the run call on 3rd down as game management suggests you keep the clock running there and don't risk the incomplete (see LSU passing on 3rd down against us a few years back).

But, on 4th down you have to call something different there. A roll out pass option to Leggett or Renfroe or a quick slant to Williams.

Sigh, water under the bridge now.

Im the last to criticize the coaches because they make good money doing what they do and I'm busting my butt every day to make a living, but I think we all can agree on one word that keeps coming up, "creativity ". There's not a lot of it I think we all can agree. On the other hand, if doin what we've done the last 10 games wins the next 3 I'll be happy as a termite in a saw mill!!!

Re: Disagree coach

Nov 17, 2016, 11:05 AM [ in reply to Disagree coach ]

So 2nd and goal on the 3 you wanted us to run it but 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 you wanted us to pass it because the runs all game didn't work? If the running game was not working all game what's wrong with passing it on the 3 yd line? I think the play call was right at the goal line, just not the execution (obviously). We ate them up through the air in record numbers the entire game. I was hoping we threw the ball on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 with a minute left. Pitt was crowding the box and expecting the run and we were chewing them up all game in the air. That was my only thought on play-calling.
In the end, this staff has us a TON of victories over the past few years so they're obviously doing something right. These kids are human and mistakes will be made. We can't complain when we lose one. It's football. It's sports. It's life in general. Let's go beat Wake Forest. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're analyzing those statements in the abstract . . .

Nov 17, 2016, 12:43 PM

But you have to look at them in context. The decision to run the ball with less than 6 min left with an 8 point lead (meaning a FG would make it two scores) and the ball inside the five is a no brainer - an absolute no brainer. No matter how bad the run game is, it's still the right thing to do. What does it matter that the run game was poor? This was a situation in which a TD was not necessary - it would have been icing on the cake, but it was not necessary. The priorities were (1) avoid a turnover; (2) get at least 3 points so as to extend lead to two scores, and (3) if the play sequence permits, run another minute or two off the clock. In this scenario, you have 4, maybe 4 and a half minutes left, and an 11 point lead. If you just mindlessly say "oh heck, we're not running the ball well today," then you end up calling a pass play an pi$$ing the game away like we did. The coaches were thinking one-dimensionally here - we needed a contextual decision, not a one-dimensional analysis like they showed.

In the 3rd and 4th down situation, the priority there was yards - gaining yards. SO, perferring a pass over a run - given our success with it and our lack of success with the run, only makes sense. But we did need yards - that is the point. With the 2nd and goal from the three, the priority was not turning the ball over, not flushing the easy FG opportunity down the toilet, and melting clock. I would have LITERALLY preferred taking a knee the next two plays and kicking a FG to an attempted pass. It was a HORRIBLE decision by the coaches. HORRIBLE.

Even with Watson hitting 74% of his passes? The run was a terrible call.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On plays like that players are told NEVER throw it unless

Nov 17, 2016, 2:00 PM [ in reply to Disagree coach ]

the guy is WIDE OPEN. If there is any doubt, whatsoever, then throw it in the stands.

Regardless of the playcall, Deshaun was at fault for throwing that ball at the end. You have to be able to trust your QB to take what is there and not force it in critical situations.

That is football 101 guys.

I'm tired of hearing the 5 for 5 excuse....

Nov 17, 2016, 10:34 AM

You don't think Pitt watched film? They know we were 5 for 5 there. We haven't been creative out of that format other than once pass to Wilkins. That's a special package. Should have kept them guessing.

Also, the excuses on the run game with the D loading the box. Then where were the screens? Where are the throws over the middle? Where are the jet sweeps?

There's something in these hills.

Why not try to draw them offsides or be inventive?

Nov 17, 2016, 11:36 AM

It looked to me like as soon as we lined up in that heavy package everyone watching and playing the game knew exactly what was going to happen - run to the left. I say try a hard count or a bootleg out of that formation. Our offense has not been creative at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have to side with Dabo. Every question seems to be:

Nov 17, 2016, 12:13 PM

Why didn't you run more? Really?! Wasn't it pretty evident?! Hasn't it been evident all year? The o line isn't as physical as last year in run blocking. Not to mention Pitt KEPT 9, NINE, nine players in the box. Guess what!? You can't run the ball effectively with NINE in the box! It's simple! Seriously! Why don't you guys ask another coach one more time WHY we didn't run the ball more?! Wow! ?????? Come on Man! To borrow from the four letter network! Since MacLain & Gore graduated, we have lacked the ability to blow the other team off the ball. We hold up ok in pass coverage at times. This group WILL be great. But, they have a lot of growing to do! If we had tried to run the ball 40 times, you would be asking why did you try to run the ball so much against NINE in the box and the 13th best run defense? It was evident in the 50 yards we did eek out, it was tough going. We would have gotten blown out trying to run against a team selling out to stop the run. The beauty of this offense is it takes what the other team gives it. Pitt gave us 580 passing yards. Usually, that's enough to win against any opponent. I just don't get the fixation with the question. Maybe ask the Tiger mascot?! ?????? I guess you're in shock. It's been quite a while since we have dropped one at home. Finding any comfortable question to ask must be tough!
On a different note. I hope this loss brings back the hunger I've seen missing all year. I've seen spurts of it. Two complete games out of ten. BC and Cuse. If we play complete football we can beat anyone. Especially the bunch from Tuscaloosa.

Re: In Order to win..

Nov 17, 2016, 1:02 PM

.. it seems to me that on offense it pays great to spread the field, even on short yardage situations. There is no doubt that Clemson has some of the best skill players in the Nation. I would say making any defense play the entire field pays huge gains. On the defensive side of the ball I've noticed that some of the players are getting away from hit, wrap, hold on and help is on the way. This side of the ball for Clemson also has some of the best players in the nation. Turn 'em loose, let 'em play. Bring and keep the pressure on from both sides of the ball. Now finish the year and going into the New Year by having fun and have NO REGRETS. Now spot the d--n ball and get it done.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't put this one on playcalling. The offense did well

Nov 17, 2016, 2:05 PM

except for those few plays. Without the INT's in the endzones and the terrible ref calls we win by 20+ points. Deshaun is a great QB and he played exceptionally well for most of the game, but the last INT was game-destroying.

We have to give credit to Pitt too. Regardless of their perceived talent, or their record, they played a whale of a game and deserve the win. Their gameplan was superior to ours. I still like our guys, but they got out-prepared. With the help of two horrific calls, it was good enough to beat us.

Hopefully it helps us.
